Giving birth is truly a labour of love and moms need all the support they can get. #ittakesavillage Dads or partners play an integral part in postpartum support. Even the smallest effort can make the biggest difference to a new mom. Ensure mom has snacks and water on hand... Give mom a break by holding baby and doing skin-to-skin Let mom recover by allowing her to stay in bed and get some extra sleep: help with diaper changes, bath time and clothing changes so she can maximize her rest Help with house responsibilities such as keeping essentials stocked, keeping things clean and doing a load of laundry where possible. I am 4 days postpartum and am extremely grateful for my husband @jonordon. He insisted I stay in bed for the first 24 hours postpartum, has been waiting on me hand and foot, and has done EVERYTHING with our older 2 girls since they’ve returned home. Even though he is also sleep deprived, he has been giving me every opportunity to rest, refuses to let me do any of the heavy lifting at home AND has himself, been working from home. He is truly my postpartum hero!! Moms, don’t be shy. Let your partner know your needs and let them take care of you while you care for baby. My husband will tell you just how stubborn I can be and am normally the most resistant to any sort of help. This time around I’m taking full advantage!!! If you’re expecting or have had a baby, tell me how do you want your partner to help in the postpartum period or what did your partner do to help you during the postpartum period? Is there something specific you feel like you might need or want or something your partner did that made a big difference for you? I want to hear all about it! Do you involve your kids in the kitchen?! Stir fry was on the menu for tonight and Avery was NOT enthused. Instead of making a big deal about it, I invited Noa to help me and soon enough, Avery chose to join in. They snacked on raw peppers, onion and bean sprouts and wouldn’t you know it: DINNER WAS A HUGE HIT! ... The girls ate it all! #nomnom Avery told me she surprised herself! We took the opportunity to talk about why it’s important to be open minded. We can surprise ourselves with new foods, activities and friends. #surprise The lesson I learned (or reminded myself of anyway) was to stay cool and don’t turn meal times into a power struggle. Did you know that you have a number of acupuncture points that run across the palm of your hand? These points are specific for anxiety and calming the mind. They help to release fear and gain a sense of control. As a Naturopathic Doula I often recommend birthing moms to keep a comb on hand. When there is a need, they can squeeze the comb into their palm, activating and stimulating these points. Its a technique they can do on their own, at any time, in any moment. The...y can squeeze as hard as they choose - they are in control. With Baby #3 arriving any day now, I am actively organizing my home birth tool kit. My comb will definitely be included! Want to encourage healthy eating in your children? Get them involved in the kitchen! Teach them how to crack an egg ... Show them how the blender works Let them mix ingredients together Let them be the taste testers! Instead of simply giving them what you make let them make a meal with you. Show them how fun food can be! Teach them about colours! Teach them about measuring! Teach them about wet and dry ingredients! Meal prep, baking and cooking are great ways to teach basic science, math and life skills, all while fostering healthy eating! Let’s talk tummy size! When a woman gives birth, she instantly produces colostrum, often referred to as liquid gold. Since it can take a few days for milk to come in, many moms - especially those without the right support - fear baby isn’t getting enough food and are often encouraged to supplement with formula or formula feed all together.... It is normal for a baby to be fussy from day 2, constantly seeking the breast. It is normal for a baby to lose a small amount of their birth weight in those first few days. A baby doesn’t require SO much milk in those first few days and the fussiness is actually an innate process that helps mom produce more milk! The more baby asks, the more milk mom produces. It’s a natural physiological feedback process. A baby’s tummy is tiny! They don’t need so much at one time! If breastfeeding is your goal, don’t give up so quickly. Don’t get me wrong: breastfeeding can be HARD! It took me 2 weeks of seeking care from a lactation consultant in the middle of winter to finally figure it out. My nipples were sore. I often felt defeated. But between the support of my husband, Midwife, Naturopathic Doctor and Lactation Consultant, I got the hang of it! I was able to breastfeed both of my daughters for 20 months! My point? Don’t give up. Don’t let fear guide your decisions. Seek support. It really does take a village. If you are struggling with breastfeeding, milk production or overall new mom exhaustion, let’s chat. Let me be a part of your village and ensure you get the right support for your personal goals. Toys. We have an abundance of them at home - TOO MANY! As a healthcare provider, sometimes my girls think my thermometer that I use for temperature checks on patients is a toy! They love to play Doctor As much as I love the traditional Doctor sets, I want my girls to learn and understand the kind of medicine I personally practice. I consider myself to be integrative and think it’s important that they know what that means. ... So I splurged! When my colleague and friend @dramandagraham showed me her sons holistic medicine kit, I NEEDED to buy one! I reached out to Samantha from @craftywhatknots and she made me the most gorgeous set with some personalized additions! I felt good supporting a small business while also purchasing something that I know my kids will play with for years. I can’t wait to see their reaction this afternoon when I finally give it to them! Pregnancy and Infant Loss is an all too common experience many couples face. Whether it’s an early or late miscarriage or the loss of an infant at birth or shortly thereafter, it is important to break the silence. No one wants to think about loss, let alone talk about it but today I ask that you take a moment to acknowledge and remember these babies and their mothers and fathers who have had to live through such an incredibly devastating experience. ... I see families in my practice who have experienced a miscarriage or stillbirth and my heart always breaks for them. Having experienced a miscarriage myself I can understand the grief that accompanies such a loss. These families come to me with questions, confusion and hope and my goal is to help them through the process, optimize their fertility and future pregnancy. If you feel you need support, please don’t be shy and reach out. #pregnancyandinfantlossawareness #miscarriage #stillbirth #breakthesilence #pregnancy #loss #october #babylossawareness

If your child doesn’t like what you’re serving, acknowledge it, accept it and move on (for that meal anyway!) It takes kids 20 times of trying a food before officially concluding whether or not they like it. Your reaction counts.... Choose your words wisely Instead of getting angry, frustrated or annoyed, take the opportunity to validate feelings. Emphasize manners. Reoffer again in the future. I don’t know about you but I spent most of my childhood years living off pasta and potatoes. Veggies weren’t my thing until I was much older. Today doesn’t mean forever. Make sure your meal includes other options you know your child will eat. Remind them that they can try again another time. Next time offer the same food in a different form: instead of raw, roast it. Instead of plain, season it or add a sauce or dressing. Instead of full size pieces, serve as smaller pieces. Don’t feel discouraged mama! You got this! Food is the foundation of health and sometimes you just need a small piece of dark chocolate to keep your body balanced. Stress can disrupt ovulation and impair fertility. TRUTH: I’ve been slacking My number 1 tip for healthy eating is to make time for meal prep. I often suggest choosing one day a week to cut and organize your fruits and vegetables into individual containers. WHY? It cuts down on your daily meal prep. Sometimes cutting the individual ingredients can take up to 15 minutes and if you’re short on time it might make all the difference in whether or not you actually cook that meal or ditch the effort. ... If you don’t have the time to set aside 1-2 hours for meal prep, hire someone. It could be a neighbour or your teenage kid. I normally ask my cleaning lady to do my meal prep but I’ve had such a hard time finding a good cleaning lady the past few months it’s become my responsibility. (Does anyone have any cleaning lady recommendations?! I’m desperate!) I have been so busy seeing patients, creating an awesome online prenatal course (including how to teach your partner to be your birth doula) and blogging, I haven’t made the time to practice what I preach. This week I committed to taking better care of myself and my family by limiting the number of patients I see a week and making more time for household responsibilities, including meal prep. This is what I learned: 1. The work will always be there and it’s OK to leave it for later in the day or the next day. That doesn’t make me a bad practitioner. I’m overly committed because I’m so passionate about what I do. Taking care of myself allows me to take better care of my patients. 2. Preparing fresh produce has allowed us to incorporate way more veggies than we have in the last few weeks (...months ) 3. Talk about saving money! We haven’t been making runs to Freshii or Aroma at all this week so we have been saving tons of ...which gave me a chance to splurge on some new clothes! So the truth has been told and I’m back on the meal prep wagon. What day do you set aside for meal prep? When it comes to fertility, I am a big believer that small changes make big differences. I often see couples when they are months or even years into their fertility journey. Some come to me just as they are considering Assisted Reproductive Technologies such as IUI or IVF, hoping for an alternative natural solution before going that route and others are already in the midst of that process. Unfortunately its rare for a couple to see me early on because most assum...e they won’t have any issues becoming pregnant until months or even after a year has gone by and they realize they need some help. There are so many potential causes of infertility and in order to optimize a couple’s chances, a truly comprehensive and integrative approach is required. While some women choose to undergo an elective C-Section, others consider a C-section a last resort. For some the scar is not only physical but emotional as well. Recovery can be hard. It can take days or even weeks for the physical scar to heal. It can take months or years for the emotional scars to heal. ... There is a correlation between C-section and Postpartum Depression and anxiety but choosing (or needing) a C-section doesn’t always equate to either. Having a birth doula on your side can help a birthing woman feel empowered through her experience, even if it’s not the experience she envisioned. Some women experience infection to their C-section scar, others simply experience pain. Some embrace their scar as it reminds them of the warrior they are! One of the things I love about working with postpartum women is addressing their physical and emotional goals. Some things are just not talked about. Was there anything you discovered postpartum that you wished someone warned you about before? For me there were 2 things: I didn’t know that breastfeeding would be so hard. I didn’t expect the pain, the sores and the challenge overall. I wanted to give up so many times especially since I had taken prenatal classes specific to breastfeeding and thought I knew it all. Instead of quitting I worked with 2 lactation consultants who changed m...y mind. They weren’t pushy and didn’t make me feel guilty for considering to quit; instead they made me feel empowered through my process, taught me the secrets of positioning and after 2 weeks of committing myself to my goal, I got the hang of it. I breastfed both my girls for 20 months!! My second postpartum surprise was the afterbirth pains. It wasn’t something that really affected me until baby #2 but WOW we’re they brutal! Worse when breastfeeding, the pains are caused by the uterus shrinking back to its pre-pregnancy size. It’s definitely the one thing I am not looking forward this time around but at least now I know, and knowing is half the battle! Another new book delivered! This one was written by my colleague who I respect so much @elizabeth.cherevaty Did you know that approximately 16% of Canadians are affected by infertility, a number that has doubled since the 1980’s? Fertility challenges are not limited to women, in fact male infertility is solely responsible for 20-30% of cases and contributes to 50% of infertility cases overall. There are numerous factors that contribute to infertility and there are severa...l things couples can do to optimize their fertility. I have seen couples who were told they had no chance of becoming pregnant without IVF who have successfully become pregnant naturally. I have also worked with countless couples undergoing assisted reproductive technology including IUI and IVF. Their commitment to their journey is outstanding and always worthy of mention. I am a big believer that food is the foundation of health. This book is dedicated to helping couples undergoing IVF learn how they can better nourish their bodies to optimize their success. I can’t wait to delve into this book and share this great resource with my patients. The power of pregnancy It is incredible to watch a woman’s body transform from the self to the selfless. Many say a woman glows in pregnancy and it’s true. The energy a woman emits when she carries a child is truly enigmatic ... She is the giver of life. She is a force to be reckoned with. She will go above and beyond to protect, nourish and care for her baby, even before they meet. She will adapt to her body’s changes, overcome its weaknesses and triumph to the end. She is the mother. She is everything. Illustration by: @the_hypnobirthing_midwife #pregnancy #pregnant #magic #transformation #inspiration #momlife #mothernature #instamom #beauty

New book in the mail and I am so excited! When I was at the Naturopathic College I thought homeopathy was a joke. I was a non-believer and refused to waste my time entertaining what I considered nonsense medicine. I thought associating myself with homeopathy would make me look like a witch doctor and I would lose my credibility In my last year of the Naturopathic College I had my first real experience with homeopathy. It was the only thing that worked for my co...ncern at the time but I was still skeptical 10 years into practice I have changed my tune. It is one of my most used modalities, especially in the pregnant and pediatric population . Even my husband, the BIGGEST non believer has seen its effectiveness when I was in labour and in our own kids. Homeopathy is an energetic medicine that is more studied than you may think. It can work wonders for both physical and mental/emotional symptoms and can truly help shift a person back to balance. It is cheap, available and effective. If you’ve ever used Camilla for teething, or oscillococcinum for colds and flus, you are a believer. You might be skeptical but you may have seen it’s effectiveness for yourself. My personal lesson is to be open-minded. You will be mind blown by what you see and experience!! So my new book has arrived and I could not be more thrilled! I wish I had given homeopathy my full attention back in school but could have, would have, should have. I am learning so much everyday, on my own, by choice. My daughters. My loves. My life. I am so grateful for these 2 (and a half!) little humans. They inspire and motivate me to be the best mom, wife and practitioner I can be. ... My passion for what I do derives from my passion for motherhood. I always had a love for perinatal care but it was over this last mat leave where I committed to making my passion my full-time dream job. There is nothing better than waking up in love with what you do. There is nothing more fulfilling than helping families get pregnant, supporting them throughout pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period and helping their children be their healthiest selves. My passion has always been there but these girls drive it to the next level. These girls are my driving force. My husband is my biggest supporter. I am my biggest advocate. I am also theirs. I am also yours. www.doctordoula.ca = @thymeandivy #mom #daughters #momlife #girlmom #momofgirls #mommysgirl #naturopath #love #motivation #inspiration #swipeleft #nofilter #professionalphotographer #doula #picoftheday #photooftheday #instalove

Child birth and labour is never easy. Regardless of whether you choose an unmedicated birth, epidural or a C-section, it is truly a labour of love. Postpartum recovery can take time and involves recovering emotionally and physically. Hormones are fluctuating, trying to find their balance, sleep is disrupted for months at a time and the body itself needs time to heal. Naturally, there is a huge focus on baby - to make sure they are eating enough, sleeping enough, pooping... enough, growing enough and developing enough. We always want to make sure baby is healthy and happy but we ALSO need to ensure mom is healthy and happy. You cannot give from an empty vessel; to give to others, you must fill yourself first - Chinese Proverb In order to be the best mother, you have to make sure someone is taking care of you. It’s easy to neglect ourselves and put ourselves on the back burner but I promise, investing in your own recovery is an essential part of being the best mother. Your baby needs a strong, happy and healthy mom just as much as you want your baby to be happy and healthy. Want to know more about how I can help you with postpartum recovery? Visit: https://www.doctordoula.ca/postpartum-care Visits are offered online and in-person, both in Maple and North York, out of @uptownmidwives and Family Wellness. Visits are covered by extended health insurance and free consultations are available. We survived our first COVID19 testing experience. My oldest daughter started experiencing a runny nose which is pretty common in daycare-aged kids at this time of year. We had 2 choices: keep both kids home for 14 days or get her tested so that she can return to school once her symptoms resolve. After 6 months of lockdown and with a busy week of patients ahead, getting her tested was our only real option. 6.5 hours in line and less than 48 hours for results. She is Covid f...ree. I never expected the results to be positive but during these times, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Immune boosting supplements are incredibly important during this time but they don’t make kids immune from all colds. It’s important to remember that the best way to build a child’s immune system is to LET THEM GET sick. Her symptoms were mild and are essentially gone but I foresee this test being the first of many. If you want to support your kids immune system this year, let’s chat. I am offering a 90-minute comprehensive assessment and strategic supplement plan for 1-2 kids in a family, offered virtually or in-person. Visits are covered by extended health insurance as well so you won’t have to pay much, if anything, out of pocket.
