Early on in medical school, I noticed that not many people who look me would come in to the hospital or clinics for psychiatric care, Dr. States said. There are systemic reasons that contribute to the decreased amount of African Nova Scotians accessing mental health services and I’d like to be a physician who addresses this gap and does something to change this. https://www.yourdoctors.ca//inspiring-others-is-a-way-of-l

"As the pandemic lingers on, doctors say it’s important for people to stay active for both their physical and mental health. "It's not only going to the gym. It's not only being on a treadmill, said Dr. Robyn MacQuarrie, president of Doctors Nova Scotia. "Moving your body improves brain function, it improves stress release and just an overall sense of well-being." For more information about how to stay active, you can visit the Healthy Tomorrow Foundation."... https://atlantic.ctvnews.ca/nova-scotia-has-been-seen-as-on
The Public Health physicians who have been working tirelessly to keep Nova Scotians safe from COVID-19 have a message about stigma: "As the Public Health physician team that investigates and supports every single occurrence of COVID-19 infection in our province, we feel compelled to tell Nova Scotians how harmful it is to stigmatize people and communities with COVID-19. Individually and collectively, we need to avoid blaming and instead, focus on our common humanity during t...his trying time." Awareness campaigns may have achieved some positive gains, but they can also fan the flames of misunderstanding, especially when they are not combined with evidence-based interventions that include a deeper examination of mental health and mental illness, or what Halifax psychiatrist Dr. Stan Kutcher calls mental health literacy. #BellLetsTalk Read more: https://www.yourdoctors.ca//how-to-up-your-mental-health-l
We are thrilled to announce that the Doctors Nova Scotia Healthy Tomorrow Foundation has launched their inaugural charitable campaign today through the Halifax Chamber of Commerce's Unity Values Foundation! To combat some tough stats: Only one third of Canadian kids are meeting the physical activity requirements to grow and develop properly. Kids spend 65% of their waking time not moving.... Less than half of kids meet physical literacy guidelines. More than 42,000 kids are considered overweight or obese in Nova Scotia Cost of recreation and sport is barrier for 1/3 of Canadian parents enrolling their kids We developed our marquee program, Kids Run Club. It’s a free, inclusive, school-based recreational running program designed to give children and youth an opportunity to embrace active, healthy living, regardless of fitness level or ability to pay. Now in its 17th year, Kids Run Club has impacted the lives of more 16,000 kids across Nova Scotia each year. Recently, we’ve expanded our focus to reach even more Nova Scotians. Make Your Move encourages Nova Scotians to move more and sit less, ultimately contributing to a cultural shift in which movement is regularly incorporated into Nova Scotians’ daily lives. If you want to see a healthier and happier future for our province, consider donating to the Healthy Tomorrow Foundation today, through the link below. https://give.unityvalues.com/61ja00
To all Nova Scotians a heartfelt thank you. We will get through this together. #StayHomeStaySafe.
Nova Scotia is reporting 37 new cases of COVID-19, the fifth highest single-day increase in cases since the start of the pandemic, as officials announced new restrictions to quell the spread of the disease. The province hasn't reported this many new cases since 55 new cases were announced on April 23. That remains the most cases announced in Nova Scotia in a single day. It’s critically important that we:... wash our hands, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds and use hand sanitizer when soap isn’t available wear a mask and make sure it covers your mouth and nose cover your coughs and sneezes use a tissue and dispose of it. Don’t forget to wash your hands frequent disinfection of high touch surfaces in your home stay home if you’re not feeling well. Monitor your symptoms don’t gather in groups of more than five stay away from those most vulnerable to becoming critically ill from this virus See more
