Here is a good example of Reward-Based training. Shelter staff at NWT is teaching Horace how to be calm, sit, and be rewarded for his efforts. Horace is flying into Calgary Airport tomorrow for further rehab then up for adoption. I so appreciate shelters that work like this with their dogs.
Have you seen these? Kong-flinging treat game?! Great to keep dogs busy and a way to feed them rather than a free bowl. They LOVE to work to get out the food! My little chi Gigi from TJ is a pro! At 10 years old she still enjoys this activity, and why not, she is working for her food! That is what dogs need.
Few of my clients are as talented with dog training skills Yuki! She is one in a million. Yuki is improving all dogs can be rehabilitated, even the most fearful. Jasmine's improvements with Yuki's little by little, day by day encouragement, is something I have never even seen adults do. If children have the desire, and their parents nurture it, children can be terrific dog trainers. Yuki is living proof. Jazmine was no easy dog. For months she hid in bushes, terrified of people, feral and fearful.
Dogs are not only very smart, they are also very sensitive.
