Sneaky Health Foods . Let’s talk granola! Granola is typically a mix of nuts, oats, seeds, and sometimes dried fruit mixed in with coconut. It is marketable, looks good, and can be trendy. Not to say granola is BAD, it’s just that it can be deceiving to someone who is trying to make a healthier switch, say for example from frosted flakes or Cheerios for their morning routine. . 1. Granola packs a punch. It is very caloric dense for the PORTION. Pay attention to the p...ortion size they have written on the label, it could be in cups or grams. Test the portion by actually weighing or measuring it out, do not eye ball it or guesstimate. Typically, if it’s 1/2C of granola this would be approx. 250 calories, but most people might blow over this portion size. . 2. The other problem with granola, the first ingredients are typically sugar and oil To get those crunchy, delicious bits they need to stick them together and bake them. Read the ingredients, see what is highest in the list. If sugar is 2nd for example, you know sugar is the 2nd highest ingredient in the recipe. Also, look for other ways they have listed sugar I.e. glucose, honey, etc. . 3. Fats such as oils, seeds, and nuts back a punch calorie wise. Which is why granola can add a lot of calories fast. The carb they typically use is a mix of fast and slow digestive, but tend to lean into the fast digestive carbs. Ingredients that spike your blood sugar fast. If you are generally low active, you likely will not need fast acting carbs. However, this could be a better option around areas of high activity, or maybe before a big nature walk when you will USE the energy. . Again, granola is not bad, it can just be sneaky. It is also very easy to make on your own! You can control the quality of the ingredients, the sugar, and the fats, and the fibre you add. It doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful. . . Perfectionism is an excuse for self-criticism. The journey will never be on a constant upward trajectory, but as long as there is movement and we embrace the short comings, we will find success along the way. Only action creates change, and change can be unfamiliar and scary. We fear change because what we are currently doing is familiar, even if it doesn’t make us happy, it’s at least familiar. To change, we need to adapt ne...w skills, learn new things, and test new theories. This comes with failure, and as a society we are afraid and discouraged by failure. . . Challenge yourself the next time you feel resistance, and the next time you feel the fear of change. Evaluate where it comes from, why it scares you. Break down your goals into smaller bits, do one task at a time, learn one skill at a time, week by week. 7 ways you can judge progress that DOES NOT involve the scale . TRUST ME...I get the battle with the scale. Sometimes it can be motivating, sometimes it can destroy me. Im sure you can relate to this situation: I feel great, I feel confident so I step on the scale and then TADA the number does not reflect what I THOUGHT it would. All of a sudden I feel horrible. I felt GREAT 2 seconds ago...so why allow this one quantitative measure to derail me and ruin my mood? Why woul...d i continue this toxic relationship? So, I have decided to remove it as a measure of my progress. . These are 7 other ways I choose to distinguish progression that does NOT involve the scale: . 1. You don’t feel hungry all the time: eating slower, more mindful, not starving and reaching for processed food. Adding in more nutrient dense foods. . 2. You have more energy: don’t reach for caffeine as much, have more sustained energy throughout the day, wake up before the alarm. . 3. Your sleep is a lot better: you are waking up rested, good dreams, and sleeping throughout the night. . 4. Your clothes are fitting better: they have fit very well, or your physique is filling them out nicely (more muscle) . 5. You’re in a way better mood: high carb/high sugar diets are closely related to low mood/depression. . 6. You are stronger and have more endurance . 7. It feels like a lifestyle and not a diet: you can adapt this into your everyday life with no suffering. You naturally gravitate and CHOOSE health.
