When It’s All Said and Done Today I am writing to the 500 of you who I met at your homes while campaigning since mid May who chose to provide your email addresses (of the 4000 homes I visited). In addition this email is going to 300 supporters that I have met before and during the campaign. I want to thank each of you for listening to me and talking openly about issues that are important to us all the education of our children and grandchildren and all the 17,000 students o...f Elk Island Public Schools. Firstly and briefly I want to fulfill my promise to you to summarize the very valuable information I heard from you at the doors of your homes. However before I do that I want to provide proper perspective by stating that the vast majority of you stated that the education experience in Elk Island Public Schools is very good. Many commented on the professional and dedicated teaching and administrative staff, the effective parent Councils, and the availability of alternate programs and schools within the Elk Island system. The largest issue you identified was the inadequacy of consultation. This issue took many forms not having enough information on new facilities and programs, not feeling heard when expressing opinions, and not sure the information given to them was trustworthy.Other issues included school starting before Labour Day, the number of professional days which spread out the school year and challenged parents to find childcare, and the exclusively business approach to education. If elected, I promise to continue to listen and communicate with you as fully as possible. I will use my education experiences as a principal of 21 years, my governance experience as a two term (6 year) City Councilor, and my public consultation experience as a recreation programmer and director to do my best. The final and most important element of my campaign is you VOTING. All this work by you and me will be for naught unless we get out on Monday and vote. The Strathcona County website (www.strathcona.ca/election) lists the advance polls until Saturday and the polling station locations on Monday October 16. As always in closing, I invite you to phone/text me (587-986-3900), email me at [email protected], or visit my website with your comments and questions. I look forward to serving you for the next four years as one of three School Trustees in Sherwood Park

Excellent article in Tuesday’s Sherwood Park News Thanks to Benjamin Proulx for his story yesterday announcing my candidacy. The full half page on page 10 includes my background and platform. Please have a read and share it with friends and family. Irwin in public school trustee race Friday, October 6, 2017 1:29:54 MDT PM... Don Irwin is taking his shot at the public school trustee race. Running for the position with Elk Island Public Schools, Irwin was a school principal for 21 years in two kindergarten to Grade 12 schools, has served two terms as an elected city councillor, and has a masters of science from the University of Alberta. In my personal and professional life, I have gained so much from teachers and educational institutions that have helped me become educated, find employment and have a rich and fulfilling life, he said. All Candidates Forum A Huge Success Thanks to the Chamber of Commerce on their Sherwood Park All Candidates Forum. Over 500 people attended to hear Mayor and Sherwood Park Wards 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8 candidates. It was a very well run night with many good speeches and questions. The School Board candidates were not formally involved but that didn’t stop us. With the organizers permission, we greeted and handed out 500 cards with Rocket candies attached with the night’s slogan ... Rocket Us to a Win Vote Don Irwin for EIPS Trustee. The candies and cards were very well received (the candy more than the cards I’m sure) and I had many comments of support and questions as we stayed to lock up at 1030pm. Of course, it helped greatly that I was the only public school candidate present (Matthew King was present at the latter part). A very successful night for our campaign. See more
