Re-opening Practices & Policies The Province of Manitoba has announced a gradual lifting of restrictions and a re-opening strategy for specific businesses, including physiotherapy. The Donna Sarna Physiotherapy team are all excited to see our clients as we resume in-clinic care, beginning the week of May 11. We all must continue to be diligent to limit the spread of COVID-19. Please know we have been working extremely hard to develop and put in place a plan that will allow ...us to bring services back in a manner that is safe for you and for our staff. This includes ensuring that we have a sufficient supply of personal protective equipment and that we are scheduling our clients in a manner that follows the guidelines for proper social distancing. Our office staff will contact all our patients to arrange and confirm when your appointment will be. Changes in appointment times may be necessary to adhere to the social distancing guidelines. As always, we are available to you to help with any other questions or concerns. You may reach us by email at [email protected] or contact us at (204) 452-2608 for further information. We will see you soon!

Service Update Current and future clients we are still here for you! Although our in-clinic care continues to be on hold to respect the social distancing protocols, we are excited to inform you that we are now offering virtual care through video appointments (Telehealth). This allows us to connect remotely to you on your preferred device (laptop, tablet or smart phone) to help meet your needs and answer your questions face to face. As always, treatment will be directed to me...et your individual needs, based upon the assessment findings and will include education and an individualized home program. Your program will include exercise prescription, pain management strategies as well as self-release and scar tissue techniques, all easily being provided through this system. You can expect the same safe, effective, and professional care as an in-person visit in the comfort of your home. Insurance companies (Blue Cross, Sunlife, Chamber of Commerce, Manitoba Public Insurance, Workers Compensation, etc.) are on board with this delivery of service to help you, so please check with your provider. Donna Sarna Physiotherapy will be answering the phone from 8 a.m. 4 p.m. Monday to Friday as well as replying to all messages and emails promptly. We are continually monitoring the situation and following the guidelines by the government and our professional organization. For updated information regarding our in-clinic re-opening date please refer back to our website at www.dsphysio.com. If you have any general questions or would like to make a video appointment or future in-clinic appointment please call (204-452-2608) or email us at [email protected]. Thank you for your understanding and patience at this difficult time. Remember to reach out, we are here to help.

COVID -19 Prevention Strategy Based on the recommendations of Health Canada, we will be temporarily closing our clinic end of business day Wednesday March 18, to respect the social distancing protocols being rolled out across the nation. If you have an appointment booked between March 19 April 5, 2020 it has been cancelled. We are sorry for the inconvenience this causes. We recognize these are exceptional times that require exceptional measures to reduce the spread of th...e virus, and to reduce the demand on our health care system. We will continue to follow the recommendations of Health Canada and we will be re-assessing the situation on a bi-weekly basis. For updated information regarding our re-opening date and scheduled appointments please refer to our website at www.dsphysio.com. Please know we want to continue to serve the needs of our clients until we can resume in-clinic care. We are also exploring telehealth options to continue to provide care for our clients until we can resume in-clinic care. If you are interested in this service please let us know. This initiative is being supported by some of the insurance companies (Blue Cross, MPI) so please check with your insurance provider. We will be checking all messages, phone and email, and replying to them promptly. If you have any general inquiries or questions about your appointments please email [email protected]. Thank you for your understanding during this difficult time. We are all in this together, so please wash your hands, respect social distancing, take care of each other and be kind. We will see you soon.

COVID-19 Health & Safety Update To our valued clients, as the COVID-19 outbreak continues to evolve, we are aware of the heightened concern around the situation. Please be assured that the health and safety of our clients, employees and community at large is our top priority. We want to continue to be there for our clients during this trying time and to this end we want to ensure that all of our practitioners and staff are employing best practices as outlined by Health Canad...a, the World Health Organization and our Provincial Health Agencies. We want you to feel comfortable when attending for your treatments. We are fortunate that our clinic only has individual treatment rooms that allows for social distancing. Our goal is to not use our waiting room at this time in order to support this policy, therefore we ask that clients arrive just a few minutes early to check in and we will escort you directly to your treatment room. Also, as a result we have implemented the following: We have reinforced our already rigorous standards and operating procedures for continual sanitization of all of our clinic spaces (see our blog at www.dsphysio.com for details) Therapists follow normal protocols of washing hands between clients, continuing to utilize gloves as necessary and dependent on area of treatment, with gloves changed between clients. Therapists will wear gowns, which will be changed between each client. Depending upon area of treatment and treatment proximity, your therapist may wear a mask. We continue to promote proper handwashing protocols for all staff and encourage clients to wash their hands upon entering the clinic. Gloves are also available for clients use. Advising clients and staff to monitor their health for any symptoms and stay at home if they or their immediate family members present with any symptoms of COVID-19, which include: Fever Cough Fatigue Shortness of breath Staff who have travelled by air outside of the province in the last 14 days will be self-isolating Clients who have travelled outside of Canada in the last 14 days are asked to reschedule their appointments until after the 14 day isolation period, obviously no cancellation feel will be applied Clients who have travelled outside of Manitoba are also encouraged to reschedule their appointments until after the 14 day isolation period, again, no cancellation feel will be applied

You may have heard the term Interstitial Cystitis (IC) which is now commonly called Bladder Pain Syndrome (BPS). It is a condition that affects women more than men with an incidence of 197/100,000 women and 41/100,00 men. One of the biggest myths of Bladder Pain Syndrome is that it is exclusively a bladder condition. Fewer than 10% of patients have confirmed damage to the lining of the bladder (known as Hunners lesions). In fact, experts in the field now believe the bladder to be an innocent bystander in many cases. So what really causes BPS? How can pelvic floor physio help? Head on over to our blog at www.dsphysio.com to find out what you need to know about bladder pain syndrome!

Ever wonder what happens during a c-section? Motherhood Link has a great video that shows the different layers that are cut during a c-section. Women are often given the go ahead to return to activity after 6 weeks. But while the external tissues may be healed, it can take longer for the internal tissues to heal. Scar massage may also be beneficial to reduce the "pulling" feeling that often occurs around the scar following a c-section. Want to learn more about caring for your c-section scar? Stay tuned for our upcoming blog at www.dsphysio.com

Brr.baby its cold out there. Cold exposure whether from the great outdoors, or a freezer for example, can cause a certain phenomenon in the hands called Raynauds. Raynauds can reduce blood flow to the hand, which can cause a change of colour to the hand (fingers may go white or purple). The hands may also go numb (falling asleep feeling), and feel icy cold. Want to know more about Raynaud's? Check out the full blog post on the DSPT website www.dsphysio.com

Fortunately times have changed and research trends with it, which will allow us to keep you updated through our blog on a variety of interesting and helpful topics. "Incontinence doesn't kill you, it just takes your life away." October is breast cancer awareness month and several of our DSPT physics had the opportunity to learn more about pelvic floor therapy for urogenital and breast cancer rehabilitation in Portland last weekend. One of the big "take aways" from the weekend was that medical management is focussed on survival. But then what... There are many side effects of cancer and medical treatments including pain, fatigue, bladder or bowel incontinence, painful intercourse, among others. Physiotherapists, specifically those trained in pelvic health, can provide rehab for the side effects of cancer and cancer treatments so that you don't just survive, but THRIVE! #pelvicfloor #pelvicfloorhealth #breastcancerawareness #breastcancercare #donnasarnaphysiotherapy

Have you ever heard of the term overactive bladder or OAB? It is associated with a very strong urge to urinate and often the inability to get to a toilet in time. What you eat or drink can be affecting the function and health of your bladder. Lifestyle modifications or behavior therapies can be an effective tool that can help. You can try these tips before trying other types of treatment, such as medications or surgery, or in combination with them. Focus on fluids and foo...d -How much fluid you drink can influence your bladder habits, and so might certain foods you eat. Drinking too much fluid makes you urinate more often. Drinking too much too quickly can overwhelm your bladder, creating a strong sense of urgency. -Even if you need to drink more because you exercise a lot or work outdoors you don't have to drink all fluids at once. Try drinking smaller amounts throughout the day, such as 16 ounces (473 milliliters) at each meal and 8 ounces (237 milliliters) between meals. -If you get up several times at night to urinate: Drink more of your fluids in the morning and afternoon rather than at night -Skip alcohol and beverages with caffeine, such as coffee, tea and cola, which increase urine production -Remember that fluids come not only from beverages, but also from foods such as soup -Drinking too little fluid can lead to a buildup of body waste products in your urine. Highly concentrated urine is dark yellow and has a strong smell. It can irritate your bladder, increasing the urge and frequency with which you need to go. Bladder irritants Certain foods and beverages might irritate your bladder, including: Coffee, tea and carbonated drinks, even without caffeine, Alcohol, Certain acidic fruits oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes and fruit juices, Spicy foods, Tomato-based products, Carbonated drinks, Artificial sweeteners, Chocolate Consider avoiding these possible bladder irritants for about a week to see if your symptoms improve. Then gradually every one to two days add one back into your diet, noting any changes in urinary urgency, frequency or incontinence. You might not have to eliminate your favorite foods and drinks entirely. Simply cutting down on the amount might help, too. Need help getting your "Mind over Bladder"? See a pelvic health PT!

Returning to activity post-partum is a big deal. Moms want to be able to do something that makes them feel like an individual/sane/back to normal... the list goes on. While there are general guidelines for returning to running, it's not a one plan fits all deal. It must be a step by step progression to the end goal. Which step do you start on? That depends too. There are so many factors that contribute to readiness to return to sport that practitioners must look at each case individually. Julie Wiebe, PT has written another great blog on the subject. Click the link below to read her article. If you have any questions about how to return to the activities you love, come talk to us at DSPT! https://www.juliewiebept.com/return-to-run-considerations-/

A study at University College Cork warns that lack of knowledge about the pelvic floor has been associated with higher levels of pelvic floor dysfunction. "It is clear that low levels of knowledge of the pelvic floor are associated with a high prevalence of PFD, and that by simply increasing awareness of the pelvic floor and pelvic floor muscle exercises, we can reduce symptoms of PFD and thus improve quality of life," said the report, What Does Your Pelvic Floor Do For You?...: Knowledge of the Pelvic Floor in Female University Students. The findings of this report will be presented at the International Urogynecological Association later this year. So in case you were wondering "for a friend"... The pelvic floor is a layer of muscles that runs from your pubic bone at the front of your body to your lower spine at the back. It has been likened to a hammock or trampoline which supports and holds your pelvic organs - including your uterus, vagina, bowel and bladder - in place. In men the pelvic floor supports the bladder, bowels, and prostate. If you have urine or bowel leakage, pelvic pain, painful intercourse, or want to know how to make sure your pelvic floor is working the way it should, speak to a pelvic floor physiotherapist! #dontignoreyourpelvicfloor https://www.independent.ie//women-have-said-theyre-not-awa
