Colette Howery (retired RN, Certificate in Grief Support) and Donna Lynne Erickson (Certified Grief Facilitator) facilitate a one-day bereavement and grief workshop for the public that covers the following topics: How to be a companion/grief helper to someone who has experienced a loss Types of loss: loss of mobility, loss of health, loss of earning potential... The importance of integrating loss into our own lives first That everyone’s grief journey is unique and that we all grieve differently How to recognize signs of complicated grief How to access appropriate community resources Donna Lynne writes: Since 2011, we have met hundreds of wonderful people who have taught us the uniqueness of grief and loss. This seminar is for everyone. Learn how to walk alongside another who is suffering loss (of any type). There may be tears, sure to be laughter and likely a shift in your perspective when it comes to understanding the ritual of mourning. This workshop is for people who are coping with grief and loss, as well as for people interested in becoming grief helpers co-workers, family members or even physicians and health care professionals supporting people going through a loss. WETASKIWIN, AB May 2, 2019 For immediate release We all face loss, eventually. Co-workers, friends, family or even health care professionals can be uncomfortable with those who are acutely grievingno matter what type of loss.... First United Church Wetaskiwin is pleased to offer a one day Facing Loss seminar, on May 2, 2019, professionally facilitated by Colette Howery and Donna Lynne Erickson. The workshop will teach you to be present with those who are mourning and how to be supportive in simple ways. Participants will understand how to bear witness to someone’s grief rather than to attempt to fix or cure sadness and learn how to create a safe space for others to work through their new realitywithout judgment. There are no experts in grief and loss. If you want to be helpful to someone who is bereaved, simply walk alongside them in their journey and let them teach you what is meaningful to them, says Erickson. Howery states, "No one is exempt from the heartache of loss, so let us learn together how we can help each other. This one day workshop offers information, education, inspiration and hope. Howery and Erickson created and designed this workshop in 2011 and have presented over 30 times with consistent positive participant feedback. Every event is unique because people bring their experiences, stories and individual circumstances to the table, says Erickson. We are constantly learning and developingthere are no experts in grief, says Howery. The workshop will be held at the First United Church, 5115 - 51 Ave, Wetaskiwin, AB from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Please register by April 25 (as space is limited) by calling 780-352-2157. The cost is $20 and is sponsored by Wetaskiwin Medi Lend Society and the Hospice Society of Camrose and District. -30-
