Naani in Hindi means maternal grandma. I grew up in a family of strong women who practiced sustainable living their entire life. My grandma, despite all adversities, became a successful entrepreneur selling cow’s milk to support her children. I grew up with my grandma as my mom climbed the corporate ladder. These were some of the things I try to incorporate into my life today. #1 - I got hand me downs from my cousins, only got new clothes for festivals. #2 - I don’t recall a... single plastic container my grandma owned, including at her business. She sold cows milk in glass bottles and created a bottle rental system. # 3 - every piece of clothing was used till its end of life, including sari’s owned by my mum and aunts. My mums clothes were transformed into dresses for me until the fabric was literally unusable. #4 - my grandma fed her cows organic food and used their dung as a disinfectant. We did not use any cleaning agents that were synthetic It took me a while to realize these valuable life lessons, but now I am incorporating them into my everyday life. I buy preowned every chance I get and attend every clothing swap I can. My partner/co-founder and I find every chance to live sustainably and I hope that some day, I can live the way my grandma lived, loving her planet and everything about it.
