Stumbled across Jack Shadbolts beautiful black and white lithographs hanging in the lobby of SFU Harbourside campus. Titled: Birds in the Thicket, 1996, I - IV, they were gifted to SFU by artist Torrie Groening. Doug was lucky to master print on this edition at Prior Editions with Jack. Doug received 2 prints, one still in the red print drawers and the other hanging in our dining room. Cherished works by one artist with the assistance of another

Some of you may or may not know that Doug's sister Susanne Biden is in the final stages of Alzheimer's, she is a very talented sculptor and artist. Sadly she never had the ability to use her artistic talent to express feelings about her illness. These self portraits are so enlightening and personal, yet universal expressions of what happens to the brain as the illness progresses. They are so honest which is why they are so very hard to look at...

I was giving Red mass taking over the sky a clean and I noticed a reflection on the print of the glass block behind my spiral staircase. The symmetry of the glass block is so similar to Doug’s grid pattern in the spheres. Are they cages, planets, globes? Created in 2006 the ‘sphere’ series of works feel relevant today in so many ways.
