Celebrating 50 Years in Business In September 1963 at 23 Simcoe Street South the doors opened to Doug Wilson Men’s Wear. Owner, Doug Wilson had been in the menswear profession for approximately 18 years and was one of the leading salesmen of the downtown menswear retail sector. Downtown Oshawa was the place to be. There were nine menswear stores operating: Canning’s, Maurice Berg’s, Kinloch’s, Murray Johnston’s, Sam Rotish’s, Dunn’s, Black’s, People’s and Doug Wilson Men’...s Wear. Imagine the crowds of men walking to and from the most stylish grouping of men’s shops in Durham Region. It was all here in downtown Oshawa. Doug Wilson was working the floor of Black’s at the time he decided to open his own business. He assembled a terrific sales team and quickly became a driving force in the central business district (CBD). Doug’s loyal customer following made opening Doug Wilson Men’s Wear the right choice for the young, engaging, go-getter, who was well-liked and respected by all. With the store being such a success, it was necessary to expand to 18 Simcoe Street South, in 1975. The building formerly housed Dancey’s Shoes. Architect, Paul Halling was hired to design the handsome façade, stunning display windows and rugged interiors. Local contractor Bob Mercer was hired to do the construction. The feedback from customers, even today, shows that great design and workmanship is timeless as customers still comment favourably. The 50-year legacy of Doug Wilson Men’s Wear has been built on service, value and quality product. Ron Wilson (Doug’s first born), who was brought into the business fresh out of business school, continues the legacy. The road was quite interesting for Ron as he entered into an apprenticeship with the master tailor who had arrived directly from Italy. Ron stayed in the tailor shop learning everything about the structure of the garments and the fabrications for two years. It was only after that intensive training that Ron was allowed on the floor to sell and fit the garments. Having gained a keen eye for the product, Ron was quickly assigned the key business task of buying product from the major worldwide suppliers in Paris, Chicago, New York City, Montreal and Toronto. Doug Wilson Men’s Wear is proud and honoured to have been recognized and trusted by generations of families over these decades and looks forward to the years to come.
