Happy (belated) International Midwife Day!! It was 15 years ago this month, at 30 years old I was all of 4 weeks pregnant with our first child when I picked up the phone to call a midwife. Fortunately for us, midwives were not popular at that point, and we were able to get one of the few right away. She became a large part of our lives and family for the next few years as we birthed our tribe of three daughters from 06-09 through Manitoba midwife care. A decade and a half a...go when midwives did home visits, I was lucky enough to hear all 3 of our babies heartbeats for the first time in our house, I loved not having to wait in a waiting room, to be rushed along, or later to have to pack up a baby or two. I was far from mainstream in my life and birthing choices, and unfortunately did not have a amazing parenting community then to back me up in my crunchy ways, there were a lot of questions and a lot of explaining to do. At the time 2% of Canadian women were using midwifes and for many people, the term "midwife" still evoked patchouli incense and homemade yogurt. I was even once accused of wizardry! HA! I spread the word, and successfully encouraged dozens of women to follow my path into non traditional midwife care! Midwives' growing popularity, fuelled almost entirely by word of mouth, reflects the mainstream's rapidly changing perception of their profession. We had 3 extremely positive midwife births and are very glad that is the path we chose, it was perfect for us ... hopefully one day there will be enough midwives for everybody wanting that same experience! I feel honoured to work with midwives in my doula profession, they are a truly amazing resource that should be treasured. Happy International Midwife Day!!! See more
