Garden Tip Tuesday! Fall is compost season! A great compost pile has four main ingredients: greens (nitrogen), browns (carbon), water and air. Greens include your kitchen scraps or fresh garden waste. Browns are often dry materials like brown fall leaves, straw or sawdust. Greens and browns should be added at a 2:1 ratio and layered throughout the compost pile. Browns can be a hard thing to come by in the spring and summer, when greens are abundant. A great trick to main...tain a good ratio, is to collect your fall leaves now and place them next to the compost bin in breathable containers. Then when you go to empty your kitchen waste through the year, you can throw a couple handfulls of essence dfall over your scraps. Fall leaves also make for a great natural mulch and soil conditioner, that can decompose right into the garden. Browns can help keep your pile from smelling, greens will add water and large browns (like sticks or toilet rolls) will help to keep your pile aerated. Turning your pile will also add air and mix-up all the other wonderful ingredients to speed the process along. Instead of taking a year to decompose, regularly turned compost can be garden-ready in less than 3 months. Dicing your scraps will also help them decompose faster and having extra bins can help keep the mature compost separate from the fresh. Ready-to-use mature compost will look like crumbly chocolate cake; rich and dark, moist and warm. You can add it to the garden throughout the year and as early as December to prep for spring! Its hard to feel wasteful with compost, but there are a few things that should stay out of your warm pile of life. Meat, dairy, diseased plant material and weed seeds should never be added to your garden compost. Either throw them in the municipal compost or the garbage. Garden Tip Tuesday For all you home-growers out there, this is the time of year when all the tending and patience pays off. Its the beginning of the fall harvest. Your apples, pear, carrots and potatos are nearly ready! But whats the best way to keep store your bounty!? For the apples and pears pick them with care and store them in a cold fridge or space (the optimal temperature for storing is 0C at 90% humidity). For your apples, feel free to pick them ripe or near ...ripe, your pears will keep better if you pick them while they are still hard and under-ripe. With proper storage you can keep you fall fruit for up to 3 months! For your root vegetables, sometimes keeping them in the ground till you use them is the best option. Another handy trick, is to store your unwashed carrots (cut away the tops) in cool damp sand or sawdust in a cool place. You want to keep the carrots seperate, as a ripenening gas known as ethylene, from pears and apples will cause them to become bitter. Another incredibley inspiring British Columbian, Terry Fox. He was 18 years old when he was first diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma, bone cancer, and had much of his right leg amputated in 1977. During his treatment he decided to take action. On April 12, 1980, after months of training, he would begin his Marathon for Hope, dipping his leg in the Atlantic on the coast of St. Johns, Newfoundland. Enthusiasm grew and thousands watched. He ran 42 kilometers a day, an...d by the time he made it to Thunder Bay he had been running for 143 days and for well over 5,000 kilometers. The cancer had spread, and on June 28, 1981 Terry died. Over $750 million has been raised worldwide for cancer research since, as many carry on the tradition with the annual Terry Fox Race often held in September. Sandra Laframboise is a indigenous transwoman and activist. When she came out to her parents at the age of 12, she was kicked out. Her life was hard but her community and activism would become a beacon. In 1974 she attended a protest at Parliment Hill, this moment would motivate her to build a better life for herself and other under-served people in the growing LGBTQ community. In 1987 she moved to Vancouver and completed a pysch-nursing diploma. However, deer resistance is more like a guideline than a hard-pressed rule. Depending on the year (this year seemingly being a worse one than other recent years), where you live and how experimental your deer are, some plants may still be mistaken for food. Dr. Bonnie Henry has become a household name this last year. Here Sir James Douglas is speaking of Victoria, and I think wed have to agree. Sir James Douglas was a trader, politician and the first Governor to British Columbia. He was also the son of a free woman of colour, Martha Ann Ritchie. He loved the colony of which he was made governor and would work to protect much of the industries and their workers that contributed to B.C.s early economy. In 1858, Douglas would send an invitation of settlement to Black-Americans in Califo...rnia who were trying to escape discrimination. At first the plan was met with skepticism, but the settlers arrived and they thrived. Douglas would be knighted in 1863 and British Columbia became the 6th province of Canada in 1871.
