There’s been an incredible amount of new information that’s come out looking at the safety and benefits of being active during pregnancy.

"The results suggest that the amount of pesticides women are exposed to may be one factor that could affect whether they are able to get pregnant and carry a baby full term using IVF."http://time.com/5000869/pesticide-fruits-vegetables-ivf/

All too often, women carry 100% of the burden when it comes to infertility. We know sperm counts are falling dramatically in western countries. One could assume that the quality of sperm is also being affected. So why aren't we interested in getting male partners more healthy? Why are we always talking about egg quality and not sperm? https://www.theguardian.com//sperm-counts-among-western-me

"But what about those women who go on to have healthy babies after losing a child? Are they finally happy and content and able to move on now that they have brought their babies home? Many people think this should be so but in reality, a large number of these women are hit hard with a depression or anxiety that is unwanted, unwelcome, and unexpected when the new baby arrives. And because these emotions are occurring at a time when these women want so desperately to be happy and connected to their babies, feelings of guilt, shame and insecurity abound." http://www.postpartumprogress.com/having-a-baby-after-infan

http://www.nationalpost.com/m/wp/news/blog.html People ask me all the time if it is true that an HSG test can improve their chances of conceiving. Finally there is some evidence to support what we often see in clinical practice! A large new study found that the century-old procedure, an X-ray diagnostic test that involves flushing out a woman’s fallopian tubes, may for many women be just as effective, cheaper and far less risky than IVF, or in vitro fertilization.

It takes TWO to make a baby! I can't emphasize this enough to my patients. Semen quality and fertility in men are decreasing. "Human and animal studies suggest that a crucial culprit is a common class of chemical called endocrine disruptors, found in plastics, cosmetics, couches, pesticides and countless other products. Because of the environmental links, The New Yorker once elegantly referred to the crisis as silent sperm, and innumerable studies over 25 years add to t...he concern that the world’s sperm are in trouble." How should we protect ourselves? Avoid plastics as much as possible, including food or drinks that have touched plastic or been heated in plastic. Eat organic to avoid pesticide residues, and avoid Tylenol and other painkillers during pregnancy. Receipts from thermal printers, like at gas pumps and A.T.M.s, are also suspect. When in doubt, consult guides at ewg.org/consumer-guides. https://www.nytimes.com//s/are-your-sperm-in-trouble.html

I love this. Many people start their families later in life, for many reasons. "Given the research, if you decide to wait before becoming a mother or to delay growing your family these perks remove some of the time pressure you may feel. If nothing else, the benefits of later motherhood give you ammunition with which to counter your critics" http://health.usnews.com//5-benefits-of-having-children-la

Thanks for sharing this fantastic article Dr. Jae Marr! "David Sackett, arguably the father of EBM, defined it as the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients.’’ Sackett further delineated EBM as a confluence of physician experience, patient values, and best evidence". I love that.
