This chilly weather has a lot of us reaching for the warmest socks we can find!Brrr! If you have diabetes, and your feet are cold, you may be tempted to reach for the hot water bottle or other source of heat. Unfortunately, if you have nerve damage, your feet may not be able feel heat properly and it is easy for you to burn them with hot water, hot water bottles, or heating pads.... The best way to warm cold feet is to wear warm socks.

Because of age-related decline in foot strength and flexibility, plus evidence that foot problems increase the risk of falls, it is always recommended that older adults have their feet examined regularly by a podiatrist as a precautionary measure. However, anyone with foot problems are at risk for falls so we invite all ages in for a visit.

Did you know that many adult foot ailments are present at birth or have their origins in childhood? The feet of young children are soft and pliable so abnormal pressure can easily cause deformities. Podiatrists consider the first few years to be the most important in the development of the feet. By visiting us periodically and regularly performing foot care you can minimize problems later in life.

How does diabetes affect your feet? High blood sugars can weaken your immune system and allow bacteria and fungus a greater chance of settling into your skin and toenails. This in turn can make your toenails thicker and more difficult to cut on your own. ... Thicker toenails can also cause more pressure against your toes themselves making them more susceptible to injury including ingrown nails.
