Hippie Hay Halo You can look at dandelions as a problem weed or a beautiful, bright splash of yellow. It’s all about perspective. #nature #creative #perspective #beauty #wild

Oh just wait until you’re in labor you’ll be begging for drugs. Oh just wait until they’re born and you’re up all night exhausted. Oh just wait until the terrib...le twos. Oh just wait until they’re teenagers, you have no idea. DO NOT LISTEN to people warning of the dangers coming. Find people who are dancing up the path ahead of you. You just wait until you’re feeling the waves of bringing a new soul into existence, it’s the most glorious moment of my life. Oh just wait until you’re nursing and holding your newborn in the middle of the night and you’re breathing in the sweetest smell of the top of their head and it feels like you’re the only two in existence and your love for them is almost scary because your mind can barely conceive it. You just wait until you get to watch your two year old learning new independence, capabilities and language, it’s the highlight of my life watching their personality, humor and individuality develop. Just wait until all of the foundation and relationship you spent their whole lives building results in a grown person that you now get to connect with on a whole new level, without resentment and control or rebellion because they’ve felt respected and considered since they were born. Oh just wait, you have no idea! #theresabetterway

Love this little rag-a-muffin Every day that I go to work I tell her I’m going to help people feel better Here she is helping her dolly feel better . . I love this picture for 2 reasons. First, it’s a welcome reminder that they are always watching and learning from us and we have to be very mindful of what we are modelling. .... . Secondly, I just love her heart! She is a sweet kind little princess and I hope that she always stays that way! . . What have the little ones in your life been reflecting back to you?? . . #alwayswatching #monkeyseemonkeydo #sweetheart #helpingothers #chirokids #chirobaby #chiropractic #family #chiropractor #pediatricchiropractic #ptbo #kawarthas #thrivehealthptbo See more

12 Challenges of Christmas Day 12 - Give the Gift of Presence I hope that over the last 12 days I’ve been able to share some really simple ways to improve your overall health and well-being. Maybe you really liked one, or maybe you liked a few - they all work together to improve your existence but it doesn’t need to be overwhelming. Start where you are, make small changes and maintain them. ... Today’s challenge is to set the busy-ness aside and be present. Live and enjoy each experience fully, in the moment. Stop worrying about tomorrow (there will be enough food and gifts ). Don’t dwell over regrets or mistakes (who cares if last year you dropped the dessert as it came out of the oven ). Try not to have so many tasks on the go that you are not able to truly experience any of them. Mindfulness is a skill that requires practice. Develop the skill of bringing your attention to whatever is happening in the present moment. Focus on all of your senses: sight, smell, touch, sound (and taste if applicable). So today, LOOK at the people you’re talking to . LISTEN to what they’re saying (or not saying) , really FEEL the warmth of the season and each embrace . And of course enjoy the SMELLs and TASTEs from all of the wonderful holiday foods. Your loved ones will thank you and your life and experience will be richer. (Picture is a repost #lrknost)

12 Challenges of Christmas Day 10 Connection Be still and know that I am God Psalm 46:10 ... This may be 12 challenges of Christmas but I’m borrowing from 12 step programs for addiction. You don’t need to have a problem to benefit from connection to a higher power. According to Wikipedia: In current twelve-step programs, a higher power can be anything at all that the you believes is adequate. Examples include nature , consciousness, existential freedom, God, science, and Buddha . As long as a higher power is "greater" than the individual, then the only condition is that it should also be loving and caring. This type of connection can replace self-centeredness with a growing moral consciousness and a willingness for self-sacrifice. AKA Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Luke 6:31. Could you imagine a world if we all lived by this principle?! For me, spending time in nature and especially with horses , helps to remind me of the wonder of this world and I was lucky enough to have some horsey time today. I hope you can find a way today, throughout this season and throughout the new year to connect with a higher power, whatever that means to you

12 Challenges of Christmas Day 10 - Sleep This has got to be one of my favourites! Getting enough sleep is important for everything from mood to memory to metabolism and muscle tension! ... Chronic sleep deprivation (hello motherhood! ) can lead to poor concentration, irritability in-coordination, altered judgement , decreased immune function , depression , anxiety and can even contribute to high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes. Research shows that with inadequate sleep, there are changes in the way the body handles glucose, which could lead to a state of insulin resistance (prediabetes). There is also evidence that lack of sleep alters appetite regulation, which may lead to overeating or food choices that can also contribute to obesity or being overweight. Babies may sleep as much as 16-18 hrs/day and is important for their growth and development. School-aged kids and teens need an average of 9.5hrs sleep. Most adults need 7-9hrs of GOOD QUALITY sleep. Here are some tips to improve your sleep hygiene: - Unplug electronics 1hr before bed - Lower the thermostat (60-67 F) - Try to keep regular sleep and wake times as much as possible - Have a relaxing bedtime routine . (Dim lights, warm bath , deep breathing/stretches , read a book etc) So if you want to think clearer, be happier, achieve/maintain a healthy weight and improve immune function... get more and better sleep! Doctor’s orders!

12 Challenges of Christmas Day 9 - Just Breathe! Now this one I think most of us can handle! In fact I think it's safe to say we all do it every day... all day and all night! This is a function that our "autonomic nervous system" (ANS) handles - which means, we don't even have to think about it. ... BUT this is one of those fun areas that we CAN consciously override. Why would you want to? Focusing on our breath, slowing it down and using your diaphragm to breathe deeply and more effectively can help regulate your ANS especially by lowering your heart rate regulating blood pressure, and helping you relax all of which help decrease how much of the stress hormone cortisol is released into your body. Proper breathing technique is something I go over with many of my patients. As already mentioned, it helps with stress and relaxation but also impacts, muscle tension, posture, exercise capacity and so much more. A simple way to get started is to place one hand on your chest and the other hand on your stomach Observe your breath. Which hand is moving first? Which hand is moving more? The belly hand should be doing most of the moving and your chest hand should be relatively quiet. As you inhale, your belly should expand, lifting your hand and the reverse should occur on exhale. There are many different breathing exercises you can incorporate along with this but just starting with slow, deep belly breathing is a fantastic start!

12 Challenges of Christmas Day 8 - Positive Affirmations So many of us have negative self talk that is limiting our growth and happiness. ... Positive affirmations may feel un-natural at first but can become a powerful tool to create the life you desire, be your best self and achieve your goals. Some tips for making affirmations work for you: 1. They should contain only positive words. Avoid not, don’t, won’t etc. 2. Make them present tense. (Eg. can, am, have) 3. Speak them as if they are fact or truth (even if it doesn’t feel true yet) 4. Repetition is key repetition is key 5. Using a mirror multiplies the effect I LOOOVE affirmations and love to talk about them so if you have questions or want to share your progress I would be happy to hear from you!

12 Challenges of Christmas Day 7 - Meal Prep One of the biggest barriers to healthy eating is time. The truth is that the busier we are, the more we need good nutrition to support our energy demands. ... Cooking in bulk and preparing multiple meals/snacks ahead of time allows us to easily grab home-made, nutritious food when we need it most. These muffin tin omelettes are a favourite of mine. A great way to include veggies and protein for an easy on-the-go breakfast.

12 Challenges of Christmas Day 6 - Channel Your Inner Child Through Creativity Human beings are innately creative from birth. From the moment we are born, we find innovative ways to negotiate life. ... Creativity expands our perceptions which leads to improved problem solving. The most creative people find ways around obstacles because they see them not just as roadblocks but as opportunities. If you’re like me, flexing your creativity muscle may not come naturally . So here are some ideas to help get you started: - Daydream! - Draw or paint a picture/ ornament/ craft - Create a culinary masterpiece - Tell a story or a joke - Knitcrochet , sew, build - Play an instrument , sing a song , dance , play!! - Redecorate/ Rearrange the furniture - Create a vision board or journal - Think of new ways to complete every day tasks The challenge of the day is to get creative. Let me know what you came up with!

12 Challenges of Christmas Day 5 - Get Wild! (a.k.a. connect with nature) We have been blessed with some mild December days so yesterday we made a point of getting outside and was the highlight of our day! ... Spending time in nature increases self-esteem. It also teaches us how to take risks unleashes creativity and gives us a chance to exercise , play , and discover. For people suffering from physical illness or mental health disorders, such as depression and anxiety, interacting with nature can help people control their symptoms or even recover, alongside conventional medication. Most importantly, feeling a part of nature has been shown to significantly correlate with life satisfaction , vitality, meaningfulness, happiness mindfulness and lower cognitive anxiety. So get outside and soak in the benefits!

12 Challenges of Christmas Day 4 Purge! Purging. Decluttering. Letting go ... So often we hold on to things much longer than we need to. Many of us have an irrational attachment to a lot of our belongings and as a result are being overtaken by clutter! Clutter can keep you blocked from moving forward in your life. Any form of clutter will steal energy from you. Clearing out your physical space can translate to cleared mental space too (and who couldn’t use more mental clarity?!) Here are some questions to ask yourself when determining what needs to go: Does it spark joy? Is it useful? Have I used it in the past year? Could someone else use it more? Would it cost less than 5 to replace? Do I have and need more than one of these? Will I ever really fix/make/fit/use it again? Tackle this goal all at once or a little each day. Donate it sell it or just throw it away Throughout the process or relinquishing unnecessary items (clothes, toys, jewellery, décor, shoes, dishes, etc) maintain a spirit of gratitude for its service or contribution. Reminisce if it has a connection to a special time or memory. But then, lovingly LET IT GO!
