Season greetings & warm wishes Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday! I will be out of the clinic for a few days for some R&R, but will be back to work on Monday Dec. 28th after a few days off with my family bubble. It looks a little different this year but I hope you find warmth and love with family and friends, near and far, whatever it means to you this year

Couldn't have said it better myself! . . This post from my colleague Dr. Kirstie Griffiths is worth the read. She articulates my feelings about the messaging behind the "end of the year" and your healthcare benefits and how this messaging doesn't fit into our typical plan of care recommendations for patient-centered care. . ... . BUT, if you've been thinking about beginning chiropractic care for any nagging aches and pains and have healthcare benefits that are unused, now *can* be a good time to begin a treatment plan as we often recommend more frequent visits in the beginning of a new plan to build on therapeutic progress and monitor for changes based on recommendations for home care + lifestyle + habit changes. Got juiced today! Mid-week self care via IV therapy courtesy of my lovely colleague naturopathic doctor Dr. Anna D’Intino. Check out her page! IV therapy is an intravenous infusion of vitamins and minerals directly into the bloodstream for optimal absorption. It’s used for a variety of purposes including to support our immune system , mental and neurological health, brain fog , hormone health, stress management , sleep issues , optimizing recovery and athlet...ic performance , and much more! Some examples include: magnesium, vitamin B12, B6, or B-complex vitamins, calcium, vitamin C, vitamin D, selenium, amino acids, and glutathione. That last one glutathione is *especially* important for concussion recovery when you’re experiencing cognitive fatigue, low energy, fogginess and focusing issues and naturopathic co-management of concussion cases I’ve been working with myself has been very successful when needed! #shamelessplug See more

Which is why concussions need a thorough functional physical and cognitive assessment which I offer as a Complete Concussion Management provider. Ideally right away but at least within 3-5 days following injury so that you get an assessment, education, and better awareness of how to manage your recovery. Awareness and patient education are key! Because of this, our clinic @choicehealthcentre will book you in ASAP if you call with a suspected concussion injury. ... Posted @withregram @completeconcussions Which means that they don't show up on an MRI or CT scan! Concussion is a functional injury. So, while it changes how the brain functions, it doesn’t change how the brain appears. So, when somebody does a CT scan or MRI, they’re usually looking for something more significant than a concussion like a bleed, or a fracture in the bone of the skull, or actual structural damage to the brain that is visible. More than 95% of concussion patients do not have any type of finding on imaging. It has been recommended to not routinely image concussed patients unless there is reason to believe that there may be something more significant going on. So if you are a patient who is concerned that your doctor did not order you an MRI...the chances are, it's because it was not necessary. And that's a good thing :) See more

WORLD SPINE DAY Annual World Spine Day falls on October 16th, and is a global day of action in order to highlight the burden of spinal pain and disability and promote spinal health! Did you know that back pain is a significant cause of years lived with disability? Proper prevention of back pain and ensuring a healthy spine is very important! Evidence supports regular movement and physical activity to keep the spine, muscles, nerves, and joint...s healthy and to keep you upright and moving well and also ensure optimal function of your spine and nervous system. Back pain is common but not normal. One of the best parts of my work day is educating patients on how the body and spine works together, what their body is trying to tell them, and how to improve their movement and function. Back pain can affect your ability to do what you enjoy due to aches, soreness, pain, or other symptoms so if it is limiting your daily activities and function or you want to know more, reach out and ask me if chiropractic care may be right for you! #worldspineday #chiropractic #chiro #movementismedicine #motionislotion #awareness #prevention #mobility #spine #spinecare #spinehealth #choicehealthcentre #thechoicedifference See more

Race prep vs. race recovery Acupuncture is one of the more visible tools that I use as a chiropractor as once it’s set up it can then be photographed (with the patient’s permission!) but I promise it’s *nowhere* near all that I do! This endurance athlete has some off/on nagging ankle stiffness and while recently increasing training for an ultramarathon one of our pre-race treatments focused on proprioceptive input to the ankle joint, neuromodulation... of lower limb tissues affecting her ankle mechanics and loading during gait, and pain relief. Followed by some soft tissue therapy, checking the back/pelvis, an ankle manipulation, and reinforced with some traction Following the race, our treatment focused on supporting physiological recovery! Swipe to see how I fixed her statement about being broken Treatment targets included decreasing inflammation, chasing out reported brain fog and physical / mental exhaustion, not feeling rested on waking, and decreasing sympathetic (fight or flight) input to the body through some additional spinal inputs to allow for increased parasympathetic (rest and digest) activation. We previously had also worked on more functional aspects of care for her lower limb chain including those hard-working glutes/calves plus a post-race sore ankle (no pics ) but this recent treatment day was mostly about athletic recovery . We also did some soft tissue work and joint manipulation to areas needed! Intrigued? Wondering more about how acupuncture and chiropractic care could be right for you? Send me a message! #chiropractic #acupuncture #neurofunctionalacupuncture #manipulation #adjustment #softtissuetherapy #recovery #athlete #training #running #fatigue #brainfog #soremuscles #motionislotion #movementismedicine See more

Much needed mid-week self care featuring some acupuncture for headaches by my lovely colleague @amandaconradacu Headaches are not fun and although I get them rarely sometimes they hit me hard. I’ve been getting familiar aching pressure at my temples and across my forehead and when it’s bad it creeps down between my eyes . My headaches have been off/on for the past few days, and despite drinking adequate water, eating and sleeping fairly well, regular exercise ..., and trying to balance stretching and taking breaks with my sitting habits (always blaming the charting! ), sometimes it’s not enough and you need to ask for help! Which is something I decided to do today when I woke up with a not so pleasant headache and it stuck around I’m in clinic sitting quietly in a treatment room and doing some paperwork while this treatment sits. Can’t exactly treat myself so am grateful I’m surrounded by practitioners with various skill sets to help out. Golden hour > bonfire glow Hope you’re all enjoying this *beautiful* summer evening after the end of another work week

Dr. Arielle Petropolis 04.07.2020

Following up on the treatments I’ve been doing with our @choicehealthcentre massage therapist @amber.harper.rmt We’ve been doing some chiropractic treatments at the end of her work week, including wrist adjustments as needed and electroacupuncture for those hard working forearms, and she’s feeling excellent! Now that the wrist/finger injury has *almost* completely resolved while she has still been treating patients, we’re checking in with her hands/wrists and forearms b...ecause they work hard to keep our patients moving well and need a little self-care too! Injury often brings people to see someone like a chiropractor for their symptoms, and we can also help to maintain the therapeutic results with a check-in regularly over time. Just like you go see your dentist for your teeth or take your car in for regular servicing, your body deserves some self-care too! When was the last time you were selfish about your own health and function? Repetitive daily work-life demands can create strain and have a slow cumulative impact over time in our bodies which can lead to dysfunctional movement patterns, compensation elsewhere, and potential injury or pain, and so often do really well with a combination of maintenance care and stretching plus strengthening ! We want to find the right combination of treatment techniques, frequency of care, education, and home self-management to keep people feeling great! For her, electroacupuncture to the forearms is a great way to get the muscles moving, decrease tension, and promote recovery while also modulating the nerves supplying these muscles and her wrist/hand joint function #thechoicedifference #teamapproach #selfcare #chiropractic #chiro #acupuncture #electroacupuncture #wrists #hands #health #function #motionislotion #movement #treatment #massagetherapy #dartmouth #burnside #halifax #novascotia See more

New clinic upright bike alert! Can’t wait to put some recovering athletes on the bike for very thorough post-concussion return to sports testing! Happy Wednesday! Another work shift has come to an end. I am loving being back in clinic and treating patients again. It’s hard to believe it has *almost* been 5 full weeks since we reopened the doors to @choicehealthcentre, yay! These past few weeks have brought in such a wide variety of complaints! Shoulder mobility issues, headaches, back-to-the-gym injuries/strains, concussions, wrist injuries, aches + stiffness + strain injuries from less ideal work-from-home desk ar...rangements, jammed fingers and wrist injuries, jaw tension/pain, nerve irritation, disc injuries, low back and lower limb pain following a (pre-COVID) hip replacement, Achilles tendon stiffness/pain, running injuries, and dizziness...along with lots of neck and back pain. Chiropractors are often thought of as spine experts, but did you know that we also treat many other areas of the body outside of neck and back pain?? Chiropractors receive extensive training in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions relating to the neuromusculoskeletal system. Meaning muscles, ligaments, joints, and nerves! So, we can potentially help you with any pain or functional issue from head to toe! If you’re wondering about the benefits of chiropractic treatment, think beyond the neck and back! We’re great at these areas of the body, but can do so much more for you! Let’s talk about Baxie acupuncture points! Or, more aptly nicknamed, Wolverine points! Can you see the resemblance? Our massage therapist @amber.harper.rmt accidentally jammed her fingers and has been self-managing the sore hand/wrist muscles and inflammation that came on in her hand/fingers, but it was still bothering her after one week. So, we did some acupuncture at the end of her week treating patients with further pain relief and a big decrease in inflammation!! ... We repeated our treatment this afternoon so are expecting further results Have to keep her skilled hands working! Baxie acupuncture points target the spaces between the bones in our hand (aka interosseous spaces) and the small deeper (intrinsic) hand muscles and nerves supplying the muscles and joints. This particular treatment is designed to decrease pain, stimulate further healing, decrease inflammation, and allow for better mobility in the fingers/hand/wrist as the inflammation and injury continues to resolve. Also great for people with osteoarthritis (OA) in the joints of their hands! And similar Bafeng points can be done for feet, bunion related pain, and can stimulate small foot muscle strengthening when combined with feet exercises! Ask us how neurofunctional acupuncture could benefit you as part of chiropractic treatments! Posted @withregram @amber.harper.rmt You all know I LOVE being an RMT, but this hand injury really got me down! Luckily, the team @choicehealthcentre to the rescue! Shoutout to @dr.apetropolis for poking me with needles (nicely, of course!) See more

This afternoon I walked into @choicehealthcentre for the first time in exactly 11 weeks. We were able to check out the clinic layout and changes implemented ourselves before the clinic reopens tomorrow! Seems surreal that that much time has passed since I have seen any patients in clinic (other than virtual care!)...you can’t tell but there’s definitely a big smile beneath the mask Some precautions implemented due to COVID-19 include strict sanitization protocols, con...tinued hand-washing, lots of signage and reminders, a virtual waiting room when patients arrive, extended visits for spacing out appointments, one way traffic flow around the clinic, and much more! As we reopen beginning tomorrow, know that we’re here for you as best as we can but this is new territory for us too, and we are still offering virtual appointments if that is what you feel most comfortable with at this time. It’s a beautiful day for gardening! Grabbed some sunscreen and some tools to help get the job done without aches and pain! Some of those planters are *big*, heavy (looking at you ceramic planters ) and get even heavier with added soil and water, or are awkwardly shaped for lifting/carrying. Here’s some tips on strategies we used today to help us based on what we had at home!... Use a picnic table or other higher surface/object to bring your planters up to YOU instead of stooping over repeatedly while you work. This can help to minimize low back strain! Use a wheelbarrow for heavier loads to also minimize upper body and low back strain. We also used it to mix our soil and water, and it helped us be able to shovel the soil with a spade without awkwardly or repeatedly bending over. Use a dolly or cart, or anything with wheels for the *really* heavy items or oddly shaped items if you have one stashed in a garage! They’re more versatile tools than just for boxes and furniture! Or, ask a family member to help Hope these tips help you think about ways that you could minimize potential strain on your body while getting any gardening or yard work done as the weather gets better and better! Now to wait for them to bloom! See more
