The number one question I was asked in the difficult year of 2020 was "how can I boost and strengthen my immune health". The questions is always asked in regards to which supplements to take". I always make it a point to let my patients know that there are no supplements that can replace quality sleep, stress reduction, a healthy diet and exercise. Often times, an inefficient functioning of the body as a result of a prolonged duration of poor lifestyle choices, perhap...s fueled by unfortunate circumstances, is the reason why I would opt towards supplements for my patients in the short term. To help them with sleep, improved digestive functioning or a boost in nutrition. All to help them feel better so that they can improve their lifestyle or get through a difficult time. Since the wake of the pandemic, we have witnessed individuals older than 65 years and those with metabolic dysfunction (hypertension, diabetes, obesity) to be the more vulnerable demographic. Research has shown that deficiencies in the following nutrients pose worser outcomes when it comes to any type of bacterial or viral illness: Vit C Vit D3 Zinc Quercetin To learn more about these nutrients and what natural sources to consume them in, sign up to my newsletter through my website. Knock knock, 2021, we are ready for you! For all of us, this has been a difficult year. One that has challenged us mentally, physically, emotionally and our very identity. It’s was beautiful to have seen people come together, fighting for a cause, to help others however big or small. I can definitely say I have grown from this experience and am all the more grateful for what I have and the health of everyone around me. Though these issues we face globally, will not disappear... when the clock strikes 12, we can at least say we are better adapted, better prepared and all the more wise for what life may throw in our direction. I hope that you have a happy new year surrounded by the ones you love and appreciate just how temporary, peaceful moments like these can be. #happynewyear2021 #goodbye2020 #grateful #greendoor #doorsofitaly #positanoitaly #positano #italy2020 See more

In life I have learned to be fearless tempered with the fear of failure. In my ventures, through trials and tribulations. Just know that showing up failure is different than never trying. Here is to being fearless in our attempt to live the best life there is, here is to welcoming failure, as without it we are not much closer to our goals and dreams. . #freedom #goalsetting #fearlessmotivation #fearless #motivationalquotes #nature #growth #mentalstate #dreamer #dreambig #mindovermatter

I am not telling you to get the flu vaccine, I am not telling you to not get it. I am here to present evidence based research. I believe the better we can understand data and statistics, the better equipped with knowledge we can be to take on vaccination discussions. The summary takeaway for any infectious agent is that proximity to the illness, increases your baseline risk of getting the disease. So when your hear figures like "The X vaccine reduces the risk of getting X by ...97%" This is a relative risk and not from baseline. We want to ask, relative to what? What is the baseline risk you would have for catching something? Many of these studies are done with healthy adults. So we often cannot extrapolate to the more vulnerable communities ie seniors etc. Neither would it be ethical to do clinical trials on this population. (issue we are facing now with the Cvid vaccine) We need to ask what is the Absolute Risk Reduction in getting a disease once the treatment has been implemented. So here are the figures for the flu (picture). Now does this mean it helps nurses, seniors, or others at an inc risk of the flu to have a less severe flu or none at all? yes, it may. Furthermore, if you get a vaccine annually for over a decade, this also reduces the severity of a potential flu you could get in your 30s or 40s. So there are additive effects. Also, if you have no choice but to go to work, take care of your grandmother etc. then a reduction, no matter how small, might be worth it for you. As another argument I will go into on a later post, each disease and thus effectiveness of a vaccine is different. There are some I would 1000% recommend people get and others that are open to discussion. Oh and before you go listing things like aluminum and other "chemicals" in vaccines. Note you have likely covered your hot chicken or turkey or sub in aluminum foil or consumed a junk food with food coloring. This would amount to more than the vaccine. The benefits can outweigh the side effects or small bracket of harm. I have 3 really great resources I want to share with you about how the data for the flu is broken down.

Great post by @doctor.paria on cookware and reducing environmental toxic burden. When transitioning to a non-toxic home, it’s important to start small & do your research! It can be overwhelming to change everything at once, figure out what to avoid, what’s been green-washed & should be avoided, and where to even begin! The first place I tackled was my kitchen so here’s a handy little guide put together on what to avoid & what to use when choosing your cookware! AVOID:... Teflon: a plastic polymer that has been associated with increased risk of cancer Copper: if it chips, the coating breaks down, or you cook acidic foods it can leech copper & lead to a zinc deficiency Ceramic coated: usually have a metal base & coated with ceramic that can wear off & chip over time which allows toxic metals to leech through Aluminum: coating can get chipped & leeched onto food, aluminum is a neurotoxin associated with Alzheimer’s & ALS USE: Cast Iron: avoid acidic foods on cast iron until a coating has been built up Ceramic: make sure it’s 100% ceramic & not just coated, this can be an example of companies green-washing their products & using a ceramic coating while having underlying harmful materials under the coating that can leech out if the coating becomes chipped Stainless Steel: always look for 18/0 (first number represents chromium & second number represents nickel, therefore the lower the second number the safer) Glass: great for bakeware & storing leftovers that can easily be reheated in a toaster oven or oven And don’t forget, whatever product you choose make sure you are using wooden utensils on it! Colors affect the bodily functions, mind and emotions with the energy produced by light. Studies conducted have demonstrated the benefits of colors where the development of brain, creativity, productivity and learning are concerned. European doctor Ponza conducted various experiments in 1875 by using colored glass, walls and furniture in various rooms. The colors Ponza used were red and blue. A man refusing to eat for days started desiring food. An aggressive patient put in a... blue room calmed down in a period of one hour. In 1942 Goldstein examined the effect of color on organisms, conducted studies on patients and observed the colors that had positive and negative effects. One of the most important studies is related to the Parkinson patients. While the color red caused a deterioration in the pathological problem observed in Parkinson patients, green led to improvements. Brain damaged patients also reacted negatively to the color red. In 1957, red was discovered to have a more stimulating effect on visual activity and autonomic nervous system functions in comparison to blue. In 1974 K.W. Jacobs and F.E. Hustmyer demonstrated red to be more stimulating than green and green more stimulating than blue and yellow. According to this study, colors in long wavelength are more stimulating than those in short wavelength. According to these studies a person left in a red room is continuously stimulated; however the effect is not a permanent one. The reactions of the person’s body return to normal after a period of time after he leaves the red room. Being subject to excessive stimuli can cause changes in breathing pattern, pulse, blood pressure and muscle tension. On the other hand, too little stimuli can lead to anxiousness, sleeplessness, excessive emotional reaction, loss of concentration and nervousness. For example, a completely white environment leads to lack of stimulus and this, contrary to expectations, does not cause a balanced or neutral effect. In 1976 Rikard Kuller demonstrated that colors affect not only the outer layer of the brain but the entire central nervous system as well. #Sam #seattleartmuseum @seattleartmuseum

How do you wake up each day and decide to live a life of purpose? Maybe not every day can be this ideal. Maybe you work on your future goals little by little every day and at each milestone you stop to congratulate yourself and cultivate gratitude for what has led you to today. Meditation, journaling and yoga keep me in ...the now, grounded and keep my mindset on track to living a life of purpose. What is the real pandemic? People are angry. I’m angry. We have had enough of having to witness unnecessary abuse of minority groups. One day Iranian’s face racism and discrimination because of deaths resulting from terrorist attacks generalizing the people under a certain religion or ethnicity or be it nationality. Another day it’s Asian’s because the pandemic started in China. Dark skinned people have been targeted likely from the beginning of our species; but brutality has... only recently started to be recorded. Even suicide, often unrecorded, is just as horrific caused by words filled with ignorance and judgement or other. We are angry not only because George Floyd was killed the way he was, but simply because it’s 2020 and we continue to see African Americans, Asians etc get targeted in more and more abusive ways, and horrifically so by law enforcement abusing their power. Humored by a white privileged president that openly supports this type of behavior. I can’t tell you the number of times a customs officer pulled me aside after seeing place of birth: Iran on my passport and proceeded to interrogate me and threaten me with a taser gun because I was standing in the wrong place. My nephew is biracial and I don’t want him to grow up in a world like this. To make your voice heard please repost these bandaids with your story. Love this post by @bernadette.abraham WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN?? . I get this question a lot. And if you’re at the beginning of your health journey, I know how overwhelming it can feel.... . My suggestion? Pick 1 item that feels doable. It’s all about creating small wins to keep you moving forward. . 1Filtered water, glass jars & silicone stretch lids: these help avoid BPA and BPS from plastic bottles, cans & plastic cling wrap which are estrogen mimickers that mess with EVERYONE’s hormones children, women & men! . I use @liquidoflifedxb undersink water filters. For countertop filters, I recommend @berkey_filters with fluoride filter and @aquatru reverse osmosis. . 2100% Ceramic: helps you avoid the ingestion of Teflon (or PTFE), PFOA a possible carcinogen by the IARC, and PFAS - another chemical substitute being used to replace PFOA. . I use Ceramcor @xtrema_cookware. Ceramic coated are ok but need to be replaced frequently and must state PFOA & PFAS-free. . 3Coconut or avocado oil: helps you avoid a heavy amount of pesticides from the genetically modified seeds used to produce vegetable oil, which are sensitive to heat & inflammatory thanks to the bleach, deodorizers, and hexane used to extract the oil. . I use @hunterandgatheruk avocado oil and coconut oil from @organicfoodsandcafeuae . 4Rock or sea salt: helps you increase the amount of trace minerals in your diet; without minerals, we don’t function! . 5Glass bakeware, aluminum-free baking powder, parchment paper & stainless-steel reusable coffee capsules: all help you avoid aluminum a heavy metal that easily accumulates and can wreak havoc on the body, especially in the presence of mercury. . 6Distilled vinegar: helps you save money and no longer exposes you and your family to a host of chemical ingredients in cleaning products. Double win! . My next kitchen swap is a stainless-steel coffee capsule for my husband (he doesn’t know it yet!). . What’s yours? . ! Chai spices are made into a tea as a digestive and served with Indian cuisine. I personally love making chai tea and storing it in the cabinet for a cozy yummy drink thats ready to go! ... The herbs are rich in antioxidants and polyphenols which helps support your immune system. Chai tea has more polyphenols than most fruits and vegetables, meaning that drinking chai tea on a daily basis can help protect overall cell health by reducing free radicals by reducing inflammation, which have been linked to aging and chronic diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's as well as many types of cancer. It may even help reduce cholesterol. Chai tea is great at alleviating nausea (ginger) which makes it great for pregnant women. Cardamom has been a staple of Tibetan medicine for centuries and it contains high doses of vitamin C and other nutrients that keep your immune system healthy. There are two ways you can make chai tea. You can simmer the spices whole in a cup of water for 15 minutes with the lid on so the essential oils do not escape off then enjoy as a regular tea, or you can powder them and add 2 teaspoons to a hot milk of your choice. Ingredients: these are the ratios I use. 1 tsp red rooibos tea (decaffeinated) or black tea (caffeinated) 1/8 tsp grated Nutmeg 1/2 tsp crushed cardamom seeds 1/2-1 tsp cinnamon powder 1/4 tsp black peppercorn 1/2 tsp crushed all spice 1/4 tsp licorice 2 petals of anise 2 clove buds 1/2 tsp freshly grated ginger or dry ginger Sweeten to desired sweetness (optional) You can also add 1-1.5 tablespoons dried turmeric powder. #chailatte #chai #tea #chailover #tealover #chailove #chailovers #chaitime #latte #teatime #chaiislove #indiantea #foodie #chaisutta #chaiisbae #chaiholic #teaaddict #teacup #chaipremi #vegan #chaiwithfriends #bhfyp #greentea #chaiaddict #chailattelover #subahkichai #love #bondichailatte #dirtychai #teaislife See more

Let’s talk cholesterol! Let’s do some comparative math! Funsies. 1 egg is about 44g and contains 190mg cholesterol.... 44g of wild salmon has 28g of cholesterol 44g of beef has 32g of cholesterol 44g of chicken has 39g of cholesterol 44g of extra aged cheddar cheese contains 44g of cholesterol 44g of butter has 95g of cholesterol So next time you consume two eggs for breakfast every day plus some of the other things on this list, if you are not exercising, if cardiovascular disease runs in your family; create a new breakfast regiment! ’ ! When it comes to cholesterol many people are misinformed about what foods actually have it and how it ends up on our labs. A common misconception is that everything fatty has cholesterol. The fact is, all plant foods do not have cholesterol but do contain fatty acids like saturated and unsaturated fats. The depiction above outlines how tahini, coconut oil, avocado oil and olive oils as well as in their unprocessed forms do not contain cholesterol... and if we take away the fear of consuming these foods more than animal meat, along with fiber, we can really normalize cholesterol levels. Cholesterol is a steroid and thus a precursor to many hormones. Cholesterol shows up In our blood in the forms of HDL (good) and LDL (bad) cholesterol. In contrast triglycerides store unused calories for energy and come from the combination of 3 fatty acids and even sugar! This is why when you consume large amounts of carbohydrates, your triglycerides go up. When you consume more animal products, your cholesterol goes up. If you consume nuts, seeds and plant based oils in small amounts as well as fats high in Omega3 fatty acids, you are decreasing inflammation and increasing your unsaturated fatty acids which helps keep your heart and vessels healthy. All of these dietary notes affect your labs and health in indirect and direct ways but if you stick to reading labels and choosing foods and fat that are high in unsaturated fat and low cholesterol you are on the right track! (Most people have high cholesterol and this post is intended for the majority of people who eat a Standard American Diet or a diet high in animal products; always consult with a healthcare professional) #nutrition #fitness #health #healthylifestyle #healthy #healthyfood #weightloss #gym #motivation #diet #wellness #workout #fit #food #lifestyle #bodybuilding #fitnessmotivation #healthyeating #healthyliving #fitfam #vegan #protein #eatclean #training #personaltrainer #exercise #cleaneating #nutritionist #foodie #bhfyp See more

Let's talk Climate Change! Part 1 Consider supporting www.replantamazon.com or another reforestation project on top of doing your part to decrease your carbon foot print. ... Recently I watched the documentary TEN BILLION which is about overpopulation of our planet at an exponential rate. This has been causing us to extract high levels of resources from the planet in a short period of time, a process whereby a lot of toxic waste is produced and released into the environement. This in turn has been worsening global warming and contributing to a toxic world. Now this isn’t news to me, but this documentary had a great way of demonstrating exactly how we are all contributers to this travesty. (You can rent or buy on amazon prime I woud highly recommend it). Many people are very excited that during the time of the pandemic, we are surely reducing our carbon foot print as well as decreasing pollutions by 18 billion tons of carbon dioxide. But this is not enough to reach carbon neutrality and avoid the worst effects of climate change. It might sound like a large number in the right direction, unless you understand how to compare it to the size of the greenhouse gas crisis. Greenhouse gases are composed of many naturally occuring gases in the environment that help to maintain a nice neutral temperature verses a colder atmosphere. However we are increasing carbon dioxide levels at alarmingly high rates which linger in the atmosphere for centuries and are therefore not dissappearing anytime soon. This is what traps heat and increases the atmospheric temperatures, melting glaciers and affecting wildlife. To add to insult, agricultural practices and high demand for consumer goods, are pushing deforestation. Stopping this while planting more trees, could provide up to 30% of the climate solution. What is also concerning is that the statistics on derforestation are never accurate due to conflict of interest. We also wont be able to recover biodiversity the way nature intended. As melanin is protective. - As you gain weight, vitamin D is stored in fat stores and is less available. ... - As you age, it takes longer to generate vitamin D. - If you choose to supplement with Vitamin D3, you would want to consume around 2000 IUs of vitamin D3 a day. Keep in mind diet and sun exposure throughout the year. Even if your levels on one day hit around 6000 IUs on random days, this is fine. We have recently started to realized that the RDA has been severely underestimated. - Vitamin D3 liberates calcium into blood vessels. Some research has shown that a lack of Vitamin K, another fat soluble hormone, can cause calcium deposits in the arteries rather than helping calcium to go where it is needed such as in bone. - 180 to 200 micrograms of vitamin K2 should be enough to activate your body's K2-dependent proteins to shuttle the calcium where it needs to be. #covid #vitamind #italy See more

! PART I Vitamin D is a prohormone not a vitamin. Many people don't know why we take it or what form we should take it in and how we process it. Many people all over the world are deficient in Vitamin D (42% Percent of Americans Are Vitamin D Deficient). I'm here to share the knowledge! There is no better time than now to get on the Vitamin D band wagon, whether that is through being out in the sun, consuming foods or supplementing. Vitamin D is crucial fo...r our overall health, most importantly mood and immune function. . , , , . : - Do not wear sunscreen while you are out in the sun with the purpose of absorbing vitamin D, after this point you can wear sunscreen. - can help you set a reminder for the time you have spent outside so you don't burn and calculates your location and your unique body type so you can monitor your vitamin D. - We only synthesize vitamin D from UVB rays from the sun at angles greater than 35 degrees (Zenith angle). - UVA is continuously emitted and can damage the skin. However during the middle of the day, when the sun is directly overhead, is the best time to get your vitamin D exposure as this is the highest UVB for the UVA sacrifice and can optimize your time in the sun. - Of course, your location on the globe is also a factor on what time of day and year you can maximize these benefits. On my last trip to Paris my sister asked me to go to Patrick Roger and grab her a box of chocolates. Which I did. They specialize in these amazing hazelnut dark chocolates which I had purchased a box of for about 60.00. But I ended up forgetting them in London because I had left them in the fridge. I arrived to the hospital where she was in delivery, just a few hours before my nephew was born with macaroons and Belgian chocolates instead. To this day, she won’t let me forget it. By far the best chocolates I have ever had! If you happen to visit Paris definitely check them out. They only deliver a preset box so unfortunately can’t pick your favorite ones. I don’t celebrate Easter, but here are some store pictures of PR from Easter last year. Oh how I miss being out in the world @patrick_roger_off #happyeaster #chocolate

Many of us have nutrient deficiencies, even at our best. The reason why we would need to optimize this or even go above just the bare minimum of adequate by taking supplements, is to boost our immunity, make our cells healthier and more resilient. These are just some of the medications that can cause deficiencies in those that are on them. These don’t include antioxidants like glutathione which is heavily depleted upon chronic use of NSAIDs. Something such as a glutathione depleted person can make the difference between getting very very sick or getting mild to moderately sick from something like a viral infection. Having a few to multiple deficiencies, means that your immune system is exponentially weakened! #nutrients #covid #health #healthandwellness #naturopathicmedicine

Never have I felt the world to be more united with borders up. If we have learned anything from this current pandemic, it’s that we are one as a human race. When all lives are at stake, we unite together and help one another. Neither race, economic status, religion or occupation sets us apart in times like these. Why can’t it always be so? Why do we forget at other times to be grateful or simply see equality in everyone? When all lives are at stake, is when we realize that it...’s only our health and the health of our loved ones that matters? The basic necessities are food, water and medicine, as opposed to the luxuries we give unnecessary value to. This is the lesson some of us have learned. This is a time to check in with ourselves and seek purpose for the future, to take less advantage of Mother Nature, consume less and give more. I hope you are all feeling the love of unity and social connectedness despite physical separation. #2020pandemic #coronavirus #unity See more

#Repost @functional.foods It’s the flu season, and the most common question I have been receiving is how I support my immune system when sick. Here are foods I will incorporate into my diet to bolster my immune system or use when I get sick. Swipe to see what supplements I personally have in my arsenal that I use.... Ginger: an anti-nausea, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic herb that has stomachic, expectorant, anti-tussive, and digestive enhancing properties. Manuka honey: an incredibly medicinal substance which can be used topically to aid in wound healing, and is a great anti-microbial agent, a natural cough suppressant, and packed with antioxidants and nutrients. Turmeric: contains the active compound curcumin, a potent anti-inflammatory compound and immune modulator of T lymphocytes and dendritic cells. Lemon: Rich in vitamin C, bioflavonoids, quercitin, and the anti-inflammatory compound naringin. Limonoids in citrus also promote GSH activity which supports phase I liver detoxification. Bone broth: used by ancient cultures for immune support due to its rich bioavailability of nutrients such as zinc, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorous. Also rich in gut soothing glycosaminoglycan’s such as glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, as well as amino acids glycine and glutamine. Apples: rich in the flavonol quercetin, a potent anti-inflammatory compound, antioxidant, and mast cell stabilizer, ie: anti-histamine response to allergies. Garlic: contains S-allyl cysteine, a ROS scavenger and upregulates endogenous antioxidant defense systems via Nrf-2, GSH, and SOD. Consuming 10-12 cloves of garlic daily reduced frequency of colds 63% and shortened duration by 3.5 days. Adv Ther 2001 Jul-Aug;184. Maitake mushrooms: a true food as medicine fungi. Contains a specialized polysaccharide called beta-glucan, which has strong anti-tumor activity and modulates the immune system by enhancing natural killer cell activity. Bell peppers: a rich source of vitamin C, a potent antioxidant, mast cell stabilizer, and recycler of other endogenous antioxidants in the body.

#Repost @functional.foods Prebiotics vs Probiotics Often times, you’ll see prebiotics (inulin and psyllium husk) and probiotics (lactobacilli and bifidobacteria strains) marketed to health consumers.... Prebiotics are fermentable fibers (cellulose, pectin, fructans, and resistant starches) that are broken down by our gut bacteria which supports the health and selective growth of microbes. These insoluble fibers are found exclusively in plants and are resistant to digestion. While both insoluble and soluble fiber can be fermented by bacteria in our colon, insoluble prebiotic fiber in particular (seen in the image above) is beneficial for a number of reasons: 1) Insoluble fiber increases fecal volume (bulk) and faster transit time leading to more frequent stools. 2) This insoluble fiber is fermented into short chain fatty acids (SCFA) by specific bacteria in our gut that promote the growth of good bacteria, provide energy for human colon cells, enhance immune function, and acidify the pH of the colon which inhibits growth of pathogenic bacteria. Probiotics on the other hand are live micro-organisms that benefit the host through transient production of immunomodulatory peptides . They are found highest in fermented food, and provide a multitude of benifits: 1) Fermented foods have superior nutrient bioavailability and digestibility by reducing the lactose content in milk and increasing calcium, zinc, and iron absorption. 2) Probiotics prevent adhesion of pathogenic bacteria and helps protect against IBS, IBD, SIBO, and colon cancer. 3) Fermented foods stimulate defensins and other immunomodulatory peptides, which enhance our immune system and improve immune tolerance. Remember, the diversity of foods we eat directly influence the species of bacteria that make up our microbiome. The gut microbiome, in turn, influences our immune cells and the integrity of our gut. Alterations in the gut microbiome are connected to a number of medical conditions ranging from neurodegenerative diseases to autoimmune, and anxiety disorder. #Repost @functional.foods Are you eating for your brain? Many brain healthy foods are rich in polyphenols and essential fats which improve endothelial function by protect our arteries from oxidative damage/inflammation.... Several of these foods come from the Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) diet published in 2015. Curcumin, the active constituent in turmeric, increases brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a neuro-protective protein that reduces the damaging effects of hypercortisolemia on the brain, increases neurogenisis (growth of new nerve cells), protects the brain against dementia, and improves mood. Lions mane is concentrated with nerve growth factor (NGF). NGF promotes synaptogenisis and the formation of new neurons. Coffee is widely known to confer neuroprotective benefits. There is a body of literature to suggest that coffee decreases the incidence of Parkinson and dementia, decreases incidence of depression, slows memory loss, and improves cognition. PMID: 28507563. Blueberries are a rich in antioxidants such as anthocyanins and resveratrol. In the literature, blueberries improve cardiovascular support, improve insulin sensitivity, enhance cognitive function (via increased NO production), and improve memory in the elderly. Cold water oily fish such as sardines, mackerel, and salmon are rich in EPA and DHA, long chain omega-3s found exclusively in marine organisms. DHA is probably the most important of the different types of omega-3s due to its important role in brain health. Walnuts (and pecans) boast the highest phytochemical and antioxidant capacity amongst tree nuts. These flavonoids are associated with improved blood lipid profiles, anti-atherogenic effects, and enhanced blood sugar control. Cacao is rich in flavonols which buffer ROS. Cacao is rich in magnesium, which promote vasodilation of blood vessels and can improve insulin resistance, cardiometabolic function, and cognitive function. PMID: 25344629. Sugar alcohols, like erythritol, xylitol and sorbitol, are additives in keto friendly or low glycemic index food products created as a selling point in marketing strategies. A low glycemic index means that after consumption of the sugar, the impact on your blood sugar and thus insulin secretion will be much lower than higher glycemic index sugars like pure sugar (refer to second picture). Though this effect on blood sugar is beneficial, sugar alcohols can cause gastrointest...inal symptoms such as bloating, flatulence and diarrhea. The first picture depicts natural forms of sugar (though processed) that may have low or higher glycemic indexes than sugar alcohols but do not impose unwanted gastrointestinal symptoms. Note that certain plant sugars like stevia may not be organic and can carry pesticides, so always go organic. Baobab sugar is still being researched in Africa and has showed more nutritional benefit and high fiber content though the glycemic index of which has not been determined, research is promising on its affects in lowering blood sugar when consumed. Many sugar alcohols are also naturally derived and termed natural. Some sugars outlined above have also been processed to their sugar crystal or liquid forms. This is still a processed food. Eating With the Seasons (Make sure to check out my latest blog post at Drbahareh.com to get these great resources on shopping with the seasons) If you find yourself eating strawberries around Christmas time for instance, it’s most likely those strawberries were picked well over half a year ago and stored in some facility to keep until you bought them at your market. Eric Lyday ... Benefits of eating seasonally: Savings $$$. Better taste. Better nutritional profile per gram. Lower carbon foot print and consequently less of an environmental impact. Broader variety in your diet, resulting in a well-rounded balanced diet. Support your local economy. The same reasons that keep the cost of seasonal food down also drive its quality up: The food is grown closer to you so it doesn't spoil on its trip, it's harvested at the peak of its season (although there's no real guarantee that it's picked at the peak of freshness), and sold during its season, before it spoils. Ideally, this means you're getting fruits and vegetables that haven't had time to lose their flavor or their health benefits by sitting in a shipping container for a trip across the ocean. #eatlocal #eatseasonal #foodismedicine #farmacy #seasonalfruitsandvegetablea #seasonal #health #naturopathicMedicine See more

#Repost @functional.foods because I couldn’t have said it better myself. Ever since I listened to the podcast with Joe Rohan & Dr. Rhonda Patrick on sulfurophanes amazing benefits. Sulforaphane, the active phytochemical in cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, bok choy, brussels sprouts, cauliflower), is our most potent naturally occurring inducer of phase II detoxification by conjugating glutathione in the liver as well as up-regulating Nrf2, a transcription factor which en...hance our ability to buffer oxidative stress. Sulforaphane also contains a high concentration of antioxidants and is a powerful anti-cancer compound by inhibiting blood vessel growth (angiogenesis), inducing programmed cell death (apoptosis), and inhibiting cell proliferation/migration. However, like sulforaphane, most of these beneficial phytonutrients are degraded when exposed to heat. Raw broccoli, for example, doesn't contain any sulforaphane until you start to chew it. Cruciferous vegetables contain glucoraphanin, a precursor to sulforaphane that is enzymatically converted to sulforphane via myrosinase upon mechanical chewing. While sulforaphane itself is resistant to heat, myrosinase is not. When we bake, boil, or microwave our cruciferous veggies, we destroy this important enzyme and therefore are unable to convert that glucoraphanin into sulforaphane. HACK: sprinkle mustard seed on your broccoli to rescue the enzymatic conversion to sulforaphane! However, by cutting your cruciferous veggies and allowing them to sit for 40 minutes before cooking, you can mimic the mechanical "chopping and chewing" necessary to produce all the beneficial sulforaphane. Seem like too much work? Opt for broccoli sprouts! They are relatively tasteless and deliver even more sulforaphane than raw broccoli. You can find them at your local health food store or sprout your own! Source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC23369/ See more

. Probiotics are the #1 way to change your microbiota in the shortest period of time. You do have to keep it up and take them every day. Unless you have a fantastic diet full of pre and probiotics. ... But where is your gut at now? If you react with gas and bloating as well as abdominal pain after taking probiotics, flying or eating certain foods like garlic, onion, beans, asparagus etc it’s not because these foods cause gas; your gut bacteria are not the right kind to help you break them down into nutrients. Many people get diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome or IBS, which is basically an umbrella term for we know what it’s not. When you look at the root issue, this could mean: You have inflammation throughout your gut, you have unfavorable microflora in your gut, and your stomach acid is non-optimal. You can get more information on your gut microbiota by doing breath tests, stool analyses or doing an elimination re-challenge diet.
