I spent the long weekend backcountry camping and it’s safe to say that we definitely earned our calories! These coconut date bites were the perfect snack to give us an energy boost to get us through our long paddles and portages! What you’ll need: - 2 cups dates - 1 cup almonds ... - 1/2 cup unsweetened medium coconut (and more for coating!) - 3 tbsp cocoa powder - 4 tbsp coconut oil (room temperature or slightly melted) 1. Crush almonds in a food processor. 2. Blend dates and almonds together. 3. Add in shredded coconut, cocoa powder, and coconut oil. Blend until you have a thick mixture. You can add a splash of water if it seems too dry. 4. Scoop out tbsp sized balls and roll them in coconut flakes to coat. 5. Set aside in the fridge for 2 hours before eating! See more

Happy #NationalCoachesWeek to all the amazing coaches out there! Heres to all the dry-land conditioning, online mentoring and words of encouragement that have continued to make a positive impact on all those involved in sport. It has been a wild past few months as training was put on hold due to COVID-19 and organizations worked hard to put together new safety protocols for their sports. Im eager to get back on the ice in a couple weeks to work with my students again and help them achieve their goals!

4 hours of canoeing this past long weekend gave us a big upper body and core workout (awesome) but it was also 4 hours of sitting ( not as awesome). Your psoas muscle runs from your low back to your femur which works to bring bring your leg up towards your body. With prolonged sitting, our hip flexors remain shortened for the duration of this time - therefore it is important to remember to stretch them. Since this muscle originates in the lumbar spine, it can contri...bute to low back pain (even though this muscle is in the front of your body!) as well as hip pain. Add in a psoas stretch to your daily routine (during work breaks, before and after exercising, etc.): Stand in a lunge position - make sure your knee does NOT go over your toes! Perform a posterior pelvic tilt by thinking about drawing your pelvis down and slightly forwards. Enhance the stretch by lifting up your arm (the same side of the leg that is extended behind) and lean slightly away. Hold for 20-30 seconds and repeat on the other side. See more

Summer is in full swing and that means water activities galore! From paddling to swimming, there are so many amazing ways to get moving in and on the water! Water provides an exercise environment that yields many benefits: 1. LOW IMPACT Water gives you buoyancy (you float!) which decreases the impact on your joints resulting in lower risk of injury. 2. BUILT-IN RESISTANCE Because youre moving your body (or an object such as a paddle or ski) through wate...r instead of through air, youre working harder. This resistance is great for building all-around strength and endurance. 3. KEEPS YOU COOL Exercising in the water helps the body cool off faster and reduces the risk of overheating. Who else loves lake life? Hope youre spending this weekend by the water! See more

Happy World Maternal Mental Health Day! Today I am featuring a #healthcarehero who is also one of my best friends! Navigating her pregnancy through the uncertainty of COVID-19 hasnt been easy, and soon she will have her hands full with a little one. She will be busier than ever as she adjusts to motherhood and deals with new stresse...s in her life. 1 in 5 new mothers experience some kind of perinatal mental health disorder which often go undiagnosed and untreated. MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK! We often choose to partake in physical activity to better our own health, but what if you could get your heart rate up AND positively impact the planet? Heading outside (safely and still social distancing from others!) to clean up local outdoor spaces in your neighbourhood is a different way to add movement into your day while also doing something to better the environment. Although many of us have been participating in at-home workouts to sta...y active while in quarantine, fitness is not only about those #gains. My family and I definitely worked up a sweat through the repetitive squatting-to-standing movements required to pick up litter; all while soaking up some Vitamin D and giving back to our community. Lets continue to work towards a cleaner and more sustainable planet - Happy Earth Day!

Happy Spring! I traded my usual asphalt running route for the forest today! Trails offer such interesting and fun terrain to challenge yourself on - roots, rocks, hills and of course, mud Remember - if you dont use it, youll lose it! To prevent muscle deconditioning, I have been trying to balance my Netflix documentary binges and reading with some kind of movement each day. We are all searching for more time out in the fresh air and sunshine these days - a little reminder that it is important to continue practicing social distancing when taking your activity outdoors!

The COVID-19 is making headlines around the world, with the latest news and updates coming from all directions. In the past few days there has been an increase in the number of companies who are temporarily closing their doors and cancelling events. The information sharing combined with rapid business closures can be extremely overwhelming. So what can you do to keep your stress levels low? Take care of yourself. Self-care should still be be a top priority. If you are f...eeling unwell, stay home. If you are feeling unsafe, talk to your supervisor about alternate arrangements. Make sure to wash your hands often. If you are sneezing or coughing, please do so into a tissue or your elbow. Don't be afraid to ask others to do the same. Keep yourself healthy and well rested. Thanks to Dr. Ferzin Mahava for the share!

Not sure about you but I could not stay inside this past Family Day weekend! The beautiful weather was calling - I spent some much needed time in nature while getting in a fun workout, and a dose of sunshine vitamin, aka Vitamin D! When the suns rays interact with your skin, Vitamin D is able to be produced. But during the winter months, it can be hard to brave the cold and get outside. Vitamin D helps keep our bones healthy (your body requires Vitamin D to absorb calcium!), improves the function of muscles, and can boost mood! To prevent deficiency, incorporating some Vitamin D rich foods into your diet such as yogurt, egg yolks, and fish can helpful. Take advantage of the sunny days, or speak to a health care professional about the benefits of supplementation!

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of attending a seminar focusing on raising the standard of care for post-partum women through rehabilitation. Post-partum rehab consists of strengthening areas that are weakened by pregnancy and affected during the birthing process. Here, I am cueing Dr. Meg ONeill through the progressions of a side bridge exercise that targets: Core Pelvic Floor... Glutes If you know any new mamas or mamas-to-be who would benefit from this, come in for a visit to see how chiropractic care can be helpful during this exciting time in their lives! Check out Nam Nguyen putting in the work before heading to Nationals this weekend to defend his Canadian title! Nam has a jam packed 4 minute free program consisting of: 7 jumping passes ( jumps total!) 3 spins 1 step sequence 1 choreographic sequence ... To help get him ready to nail these elements, weve added a couple of hip mobility drills to his off-ice warm up : Hip 90/90 - Nam uses his hands as anchors in his movement transfers to help keep the focus of the exercise in his hips, as opposed to maintaining an upright posture. With his hands behind him, it gives him the ability to change his pelvic position and work on the range of motion in his hips without compromising his back. Hip CARs - CARs (controlled articular rotations) are targeted at moving a joint in isolation. It helps to work on the mobility of the joint as well as the control of the muscles that move it. Here, we have started to incorporate some deliberate joint coupling between the spine and pelvis as ultimately, joints work together. #CTNats20

A big thank you goes out to DanceTastic Studio for having me in to spend some time working on core stability and hip mobility with their dancers! Dancers perform many tricks which require balance, mobility and strength. The core is more than just abs - it includes muscles in the back, abdomen, hips, and glutes. Having a strong and balanced core can help to prevent injury and pain. Today we worked on a few things to help these dancers remain strong and mobile over the win...ter holidays, and so they will be ready to jump into the competitive season in the new year! Pelvic Tilts - to help find the neutral position for the spine and pelvis Dead Bug - to help build core stability Hip 90/90 - to help with hip mobility (and because #hipsdontlie) All individuals (not just dancers!) would benefit from these exercises to better their health - stay tuned for more detailed descriptions!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Have you ever been sore after shovelling? Shovelling can be a strenuous activity on your body as each shovelful of snow weighs about 5-7 lbs! Try out these tips to help protect your back: Shovel Frequently - Dont allow the snow to pile up! By shovelling more times, you will be moving less snow (aka less weight) per shovelful, which will help reduce the strain on your back. ... Push, Dont Throw - Pushing the snow (with a pusher-type shovel) all the way to the side of your driveway instead of throwing it to the side will reduce the amount of twisting and turning movements on your back. Bend Your Knees - When lifting up piles of snow, bend your knees and use your arms and legs to lift each shovelful. Engaging your core at the same time will also help to keep your spine in neutral. If you find yourself feeling persistent achiness following shovelling, come in for a visit to see how chiropractors can help keep you safe during the snowy months!
