Well it is Jessica’s last day as Dr. Barnard’s assistant! She is headed off to Addictions & Mental Health for a full time position! Plus she is having her 4th girl in September!! it’s bitter sweet but excited for her new adventure! Please welcome Shannon as Dr. Barnard’s new assistant

Dr. Eduard (Eddie) Barnard (M.B.Ch.B,M.Med (anesth) LMCC, FRCPA) Dr. Barnard finished his Anesthesia training in South Africa during 1997. After practicing for a period of 6 years in Johannesburg, he decided to relocate to Canada. Dr. Barnard and his family decided to make Red Deer their home town, and since 2006 he has been busy with his work as an Anesthesiologist in the Red Deer Regional Hospital. Besides working in the operating room, he is also working... in the intensive care unit. Dr. Barnard has also recently been appointed as Clinical Associated Professor at the University of Alberta. In 2015, Dr. Barnard decided to take further training in Interventional Ultrasound guided Techniques to treat Patients with Chronic Pain. He is well acquainted in the use of ultrasound-guided techniques to treat chronic spine and other related painful conditions. Dr. Barnard is mostly interested in treating the following painful conditions: Neck pain associated with headaches ( whiplash injury) Thoracic spine pain Lumbar spine pain Sacroiliac related pain Pelvic related pain Hip pain Medical conferences and Clinical workshops, related to chronic pain conditions are attended regular, in order to offer his patients with the latest and best evidence based treatment. Besides treating chronic pain, Dr. Barnard also makes recommendations regarding appropriate therapeutic medical treatment to the referring clinician. As part of a MULTIDISCIPLINARY APPROACH, there is the following members in the team: Dr. Safa Beshai, well respected Psychiatrist in Red Deer, also working in Discovery Clinic Dr. Christo Koen, well known Addiction Specialist and family physician, also working in Discovery clinic. Other Family physicians, who diagnose and treat patients with other related medical conditions. Drs. Cornelius Claasen, Francois Grimbeek, Nicol Basson, Annegret Kotze and Fiona Fordyce University trained Kinesiologist, Braden Draude and Andrea Flieler, helping patients with chronic pain to regain mobility and strength. Easy access, for referral to PCN(Primary care network) psychologist and nurse practioners, who also work from Discovery Medical clinic.

Jessica Sabey Medical Office Assistant/ Health Unit Coordinator Jessica moved from northern BC to Alberta 5 years ago. Red deer now her home, she attended a Medical office assistant with Health Unit Coordinator specialty college program and graduated with honors. She has been at Discovery for over a year, working the walk-in side of the clinic, and now is Dr. Barnard's assistant ... Any inquires can be made by giving Jessica a call at the Clinic.

ANDREA FLIELER EXERCISE THERAPIST Dip FAHP, FST L1, PT/OTA ... Andrea is from eastern Ontario and moved to Alberta in 2014. In Ontario she completed her Fitness and Health Promotion Diploma at St. Lawrence College, where she became a fully certified personal trainer through CSEP and worked as a personal trainer for 5 years. Her passion for helping clients recover from injuries lead her to the Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy Assistant program at KLC College in Kingston, where she got to complete 350 hours of clinic practicum hours before being certified. Her latest schooling endeavor is Fascial Stretch Therapy to help clients regain pain free mobility. Andrea has experience as an assistant coach/ trainer for U12-U14 womens competitive soccer team. She was also a competitive soccer player and goalie from age 12 right up to the end of college. Other sports she enjoyed were wrestling, discus, javelin and swimming. She is currently training and coaching crossfit and has recently has taken up snowboarding since moving out to the great west! Andrea is excited for the new opportunities and looking forward to all the new skills she will learn. Andrea joined Collegiate in February 2017.

BRADEN DRAUDE EXERCISE THERAPIST BA KIN Braden was born in Lloydminster but has spent most of his life living in Red Deer. Upon Graduation, Braden continued his post secondary education at the University of Calgary, obtaining a Kinesiology Degree in 2016.... Braden has experience working with the RDC Kings Volleyball team as a trainer. During this time the team travelled to Niagara for nationals and brought home second place. Braden has a background in break dancing and has taught classes for 5 years. He was also involved with hockey growing up and is an Oilers fan! In his spare time, Braden enjoys golfing and camping in the summer and downhill skiing in the winter months. Braden is looking forward to starting his career in the rehab field here at Collegiate. Braden joined Collegiate in June 2016

CONSULT SERVICES: A referral is required from your family physician or referring specialist. You will be contacted by our office prior to book your initial consult, please note our wait time may change depending on the referral volume. You will be evaluated by Dr. Barnard at your first visit in a comprehensive manner. A report will be sent to your referring physician to provide some guidance in your care and we will indicate what services we will be providing. We offer a shared care model where the primary care physician remains central in your care.

MEDICAL MANAGEMENT: There are a number of medical options available to treat chronic pain. Studies have shown that 1 in 3 patients will get 30-40% relief from most pain medications available. Some of the newer medications are showing better results and may improve pain by 50% in 40-50% of our patients.

INTERVENTIONAL TREATMENTS: Dr. Eduard Barnard is trained to perform image guided (ultrasound) injection treatments. Studies have shown that injection treatments may improve 2 in 3 patient's pain by 40-50% for 6-10 weeks on average. The treatments may contain local anesthetics only, local anesthetics and cortisone or local anesthetics and steroid. We perform spine and soft tissue procedures, most of which are covered by the Medical Services Plan, but some may not be and the cost will be discussed at your visit.
