TRANSITION September 1 always feels like a unwelcome guest in my home. It shows up unannounced, dressed in drabs, bringing gifts I do not wish for. Return to school, routines and dark rainy days. I am forever in denial that the warm weather and lightheartedness summer offers must come to an end. This season change seems especially difficult this year, perhaps because 2020 has already felt like a blur of transitions and pivots. The fatigue of always adapting is setting in. I...'ve spent the last few days reflecting on what I'd like this season to be. How can I welcome it into my life, rather than my usual pushing away. Setting intentions and goals has always helped me focus and to ease the anxiety of changes. For the first time in what seems like a lifetime, I am not returning to school and have the freedom to create my own routine. I am now one month into my naturopathic medical practice (!). I'm prioritizing creating connection with those around me. My intentions for the fall are to continue to cultivate and grow these things. My goals include: creating content for IG and launching my website, re-instating a movement routine and reeling in the food and alcohol indulgences of the summer (yes, even NDs indulge). Furthermore, my goals include spending more time in nature and connecting with myself.I can feel myself leaning in and trusting where this next season will take me. I invite you to do the same. So, welcome September 1. I look forward to redefining our relationship and seeing what we can create. How do you manage transition periods in your life? If you are unsure, book an appointment with me and we can create a strategy together!

Ladies, this one is for you! The women wellness exam aka breast and PAP exams. Honestly, I think that women wellness exams are one of the highest forms of self-care that you can do. An act to take care of your body, learn more about it and prevent disease. . ... BREAST EXAM: While self or clinical breast exams are no longer recommended for detection of breast cancer, it is still recommended that women (and men) become familiar with their breast tissue. Regular self-examinations get you acquainted with your healthy tissue and how it changes throughout your menstrual cycle. This way, if there are changes you will be the first to know! Most lumps aren't cancerous, but always consult with your health care provider for further evaluation. Having a clinical breast examination can be helpful to learn proper technique for self-examinations and to confirm that the tissue is normal and healthy. Mammograms are recommended every 3 years for women 50-74 years old with no known risk factors for breast cancer, and annually for women 40-74 years old with risk factors. . PAP EXAM: I think the PAP exam is an example of our medical system nailing prevention and early detection of disease. Cervical cancer is largely caused by an HPV infection. The PAP test examines cervical cells for signs of dysplasia or cancer. A women's lifelong risk of developing cervical cancer is 1 in 168 (!). However, since the implementation of PAP exams, death rates have decreased by up to 75%. Cervical cancer is generally a slow developing cancer, leaving us with time for early detection and intervention. PAP exams are recommended every 3 years for women 25-69 years old who are or have been sexually active. If you have any risk factors or have had an abnormal test result, your recommendations change - please consult your health care provider. . Yes, this exam has a reputation for being awkward and uncomfortable, even painful - but it doesn't have to be! We aim to create comfortable, empowered and educational exams for you. I invite you to practice this act of self-care as recommended. I offer women wellness exams in clinic - you can book online through the link in my bio.

Did you know, naturopathic doctors can perform acupuncture? Using Traditional Chinese Medicine principles, various ailments can be addressed: - anxiety and depression - fatigue... - pre-menstrual syndrome - peri-menopausal symptoms - digestive concerns - addiction - and so much more Furthermore, using acupuncture needles, we can address musculoskeletal concerns including: - muscle pain and tightness - generalized body pain - headaches - bonus: we can add cupping to your treatment for even more relief More bonus! Acupuncture treatments are typically 25-40 minutes, which means you get a chance to lie down for some quiet time in the middle of the day. Quiet time to reflect, meditate, have a cat nap? This opportunity for a rest is therapeutic in itself. Acupuncture is one of my favourite treatment modalities! Let's find out how it can benefit you.
