Dr Yalini Aravinthan explaining about the guidelines and infection protocol implemented in dental clinics for a safety reopening

Dr Yalini Aravinthan Dentist 01.10.2020

When I am adjusting to a new norm of dentistry I realized I had missed something very important which I do day to day in my career. I have incorporated all the ...new technologies which protect my patient and my staff from this COVID 19, yet I couldn't install or bring back something that cost me nothing but gives me wholehearted completeness. MY SMILE. I miss my SMILE. My patients know me by my SMILE mostly. I never had any patient left my operatory room without commenting on my smile, as for that my practice acquired the name " Yasmiles" Now, because of this new norm my zygomaticus major and minor fails to pull up my corner of the mouth, my orbicularis oculi forgets to crinkle. My smile is one of the handiest utensils in my communication drawer yet my N95 mask has locked it away. Trying to interact with other humans without being able to smile is the facial equivalent of communicating via text message. The so-called MASK has alienated me from my patients. I couldn't even let my patients know I am smiling behind my MOUTH covering, to let them know I am happy to see you, I am welcoming you and friendly with you. My clinic's welcome back brochure says "STOP"; have screening ON, have you mask up! Never in my life, a welcome back brochure had said " STOP". and No wonder why my smile disappeared seeing these. Our face is the gateway to who we are, the front door to our humanity and individuality. But yet these days we mouth off do facetime, we have lip service, give each other text lip; I mean to say all virtual health services we do to our patients. Both health professionals and patients don't like this whole concept of virtualism. We did lose our perception of warmth, competence, and trust. Yet we hide behind the mask. We don't want COVID. but we had acquired something dangerous than that!
