Nutritional deficiencies usually occur secondary to a primary condition (e.g., irritable bowel disease, cancer, pregnancy), and progress over time from a state of nutritional inadequacy to a state of serious illness or even death. The development of a nutrient deficiency usually goes through the following stages: Adequacy Negative balance Decline in tissue stores Loss of function Signs and symptoms of deficiency [ 413 more words ] https://dreberding.com/nutritional-deficiencies-and-the-wa/

Given this is a survey and not causation research we don't want to eqaute social media use with pschological issues, but the corelation of high social media engagement with is concerning. 61% of girls in grades 7-12 who used social media for more than 5 hours daily had serious psychological distress in the previous month. About an hour daily showed the lowest distress levels. The take home message, social media appears to be creating mental health fallout in adolescents.

If you are not already consuming the writing of Michael Pollan, you have been missing out. This latest work may not be everyone's cup of tea; I just finished it and I highly recommend it to anyone with an 'open mind' (pun intended). If you aren't up for an indepth discussion about controlled substances, you might start with some of his other works. He does such a good job of framing topics that you may well return to this one out of shear respect for the perspective that he brings to the table.

As a parent, it can be difficult to keep up with all the information about your child’s health, especially if they are suffering from conditions like attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD). It is complex and multifactorial. ADHD is the most common childhood neurobehavioral disorder, affecting between five and ten percent of school-aged children. There is much evidence to suggest that an imbalance of neurotransmitters (dopamine and noradrenalin) plays a central role. [ 283 more words ] https://dreberding.com/iron-can-strengthen-attention/

Digestive health is so important; I can't overstate it! The strangest thing about the importance of the strains of bacteria or flora in the digestive tract is that it can have an impact in completely unassociated organs. This researcher is finding mental health improvements, no matter what you are trying to solve do not forget the bacteria that lives within you.

A few years ago I started a walking group because I had so many patients who were feeling isolated. I stumbled on this this video today that addresses adults without friends and has some really great ideas. I would love hear what you do to reinvigorate your social circle. What has worked for you?

Joint pain? So often, my patients come in and tell me that they have had cortisone injection to treat osteoarthritis. Why are they seeing me? The answer - for their osteoarthritis. The treatment doesn't seem to be working. In truth, research published in JAMA (considered an elite medical journal) shows that the treatment is doing harm! If you have osteoarthritis and you want to treat it, you have options. Consider getting Prolotherapy or PRP (the choice of All Star athletes including Steph Currie, Peyton Manning and Dez Bryant). If you are interested in finding out more, please come in and talk to me BEFORE you get a damaging cortisone injection.

Kids who are playing outside independently are more inventive, are at lower risk of having behavioural issues, more likely to highly socially developed and are better problem solvers

Healthy children: What to look for and what to do? Parents have two tendencies: an ability to see what is wrong and an inability to see what is wrong. If this seems contradictory thats because it is.... Seeing What Is Wrong: Parents know their kids. When something is off they recognize it. They see things that nobody else will. What do you do with those insights? Parents tell me that when they mention these minor things to their MDs, they are largely disregarded. What appears off to a parent can be within the normal range for a health care worker. People who are not engaging with the child daily cannot see these changes, but they can be important to catch early. Correcting small, recent problems makes treatment much easier and can prevent deep seated challenges later on in life. Examples of changes which can represent significant problems down the road include: social withdrawal or anxiety, more or less frequent bowel movements/gas, changes in energy or sleep, sugar and/or salt seeking, frequent colds. Any of these that are sustained for two weeks or more could merit investigation into the cause. Not Seeing What Is Wrong: There are at least three ways parents can overlook health issues with their children. Firstly, parents see themselves reflected in their children. People have, what I call, constitutional tendencies. This means, within their makeup, they are more prone to catch colds, have low moods, be anxious, have constipation, etc. When parents see these things in their children they may think, they got that from me. It can however be correctable, in both parent and child. Secondly, the child may just have always been a certain way regardless of parental health. For example, a poor sleeper, lethargic, developing slower than peers, etc. Finally, spending so much time, day in and day out, with anyone prevents you from observing slow changes. Mostly this is seen in behaviours like anxiety or resistance behaviours. Summer time is a great time to address childhood health issues because there is a change in life patterns and flows. This normal disruption is a opportunity to introduce healthful changes of any form, dietary, exercise, sleep, behavioural, etc. On Thursday June 14 th at 6:30, I will be doing a short presentation at Stay Wild in Pemberton on childhood health. The topic will be: The Very Basics of Health through Nutritional Support and Supplementation for Children The first six people to register and send an email to [email protected] will receive a 25% discount off an initial visit for a child with me at Connections Wellness Clinic in Pemberton. As well, you will receive a 10% coupon for a Stay Wild purchase.

Modern life has been developed to put many workers into chairs. This has led to the ever changing pursuit for the perfect ergonomic chair. If you do an internet search, you will find hundreds of chairs professing to be exactly what you need to improve "insert health condition." Perspective is important; by reframing, you can actually correct most sitting related health condition. [ 547 more words ] http://dreberding.com/stand-up-for-your-health/

Over the course of everyday life, our bodies' are exposed to many different factors which have been developed to kill bacteria or have that effect when we are exposed to them. Here are a few of them: Excessive sugars are food for unhealthy bacteria in and on our bodies. Food Additives. (Link to allowed food additives.) Pesticides (like RoundUp) which have been sprayed on agricultural products. [ 354 more words ] http://dreberding.com/511-2/

Into the research this morning and finding some interesting stuff. This article outlines how antibiotics can effect mitochondria and even what can be done about it. It is not uncommon for individuals to have long term negative effects after taking ciprofloxacin, the antibiotics found in this research article. The mechanism for the problem is demonstrated to be oxidative damage in mitochondria. Mitochondria is a cellular component (believed to be derived from bacteria) re...sponsible for energy production in all the cells of the body. The oxidation decreases mitochondrial output and renders every cell affected less productive. The research showed that taking a readily available nutritional supplement called N Acetyl-L-Cysteine (usually labelled NAC) decreased the mitochondrial side effects without effecting the desired antibiotic action of the ciprofloxicin. Granted this wasn't human research so using this knowledge in patients must be approached with a grain of salt; in this case, the risk:reward of doing so seems very much toward the reward side.

If you are wondering why you can't get past that weight loss plateau, this could be the reason. You may have a strain of bacteria living in your large intestine that produces a chemical resulting in increased risk of diabetes, decreased energy production, and weight gain. For some, it is not because of lack of effort, rather your stubborn weight is due to billions of bacteria telling your body to gain weight. This too can be corrected. #naturopathicmedicine can treat it. #guthealth #dreberding #polohealth #treatthecause
