The Coronavirus could do real, long-lasting damage to women’s careers. A record number of unemployment numbers continue to grow, and women are having to choose... between career and family. In America, women are doing 15 more hours of domestic labor a week in addition to having to possibly be working from home. As schools and child care centers are closed in some places (or parents feel the risks are too great), working women do not always have the help of extended family around. In a recent article we have linked in bio, American women are falling behind men in unemployment rates by a full percentage point. Black women are especially behind by an additional 4%. On average, women make up over 50% of the workforce in many industries. The wage gap for women already exists, and if they are forced to stay at home and lose steam on their career paths, how will this be equitable? What will the impact be to the economy? It seems that without many additional benefits like paid family leave and paid childcare for pre-K and younger, the economy and equality for women could be at risk.
