Growco post natal rehab 25.09.2020

You shouldn’t have to be a doctor with 10 years of post secondary education to know how to properly take care of a women’s body after baby. I founded @growco.re...hab in 2018 when I was 32 weeks pregnant with my first baby. Having worked in the fitness industry, I was determined to avoid the pain and incontinence I saw so many mothers suffering from. So, I sat, pen to paper, writing out my own rehab programs. But I knew I couldn’t keep this to myself. Two months ago, I welcomed my second baby into the world, and I couldn’t imagine navigating my healing during times like these without this community we have created. From the beginning, GrowCo has been dedicated to giving mothers the postpartum care they deserveno matter where they are in their journey. But it has grown to become so much more more than that. It’s become a community of educators, driven by our GrowCo ambassadors. A community of mothers who support each other from near and far. A community of healing. Our classes and seminars have moved online, which has stimulated a greater impact geographically, while still remaining united in our community of mamas. The online GrowCo health professional seminar launches in June. DM me to get on the list. #GROWCO #postpartumrehab #takebackpostpartum #pregnancyhealth #birthtrauma #pelvicfloorphysio #fourthtrimester #postpartumlife #postnatalhealth #postnatalrecovery #womenswellness #doulalove #postnatalrecovery #wellnesseducation #pelvicpain #hormones #pelvicfloor #postpartum #postpartumhealth #postpartumsupport #postpartumhealing #postpartumgoals #postpartumcare

Do you know a mom who complains of low back pain? Theyre not the glamour muscles you often think about, but the inner unit of the core is the most important when it comes to your overall health, function and ability to be pain-free The inner unit is comprised of:... diaphragm pelvic floor transverse abdominis (TVA) multifidis internal obliques This inner unit needs to be both functional and coordinated in order to do its primary job which is to stabilize the spine and the sacroiliac joints. Lets focus on the TVA. The TVA muscle is so important it actually fires BEFORE you move. One study found that in patients with low back pain, the TVA was delayed in onset of contraction - but that with a 4-week training program they were able to improve the activation by almost two-tenths of a second. The GrowCo program focuses on the proper rehab of post natal women BEFORE they ever reach the point of suffering from low back pain. Tag a mom that needs to know about the REAL core work she should be doing! Reference: ncbi.nlm.gov/PMC/articles/PMC5717480 www.growcorehab.com

Audra and I had our final appointment with the @midwivesofyork today virtually, of course. The first weeks and months of motherhood are isolating enough when you’re NOT self-isolating. Now, more than ever, we need to show up for moms-to-be and those navigating life postpartum. As practitioners, we play an important role in reminding moms that despite their routines being upended and their plans for this special time being lost they still need to show up for their healin...g. Our knowledge and education are more vital than ever. It’s time to show up for your patients on video: speak to them directly and let them know they are not alone. Spread awareness by offering short at-home workouts that are key to postpartum healing in times of stress. Increase interaction within your audience to help connect mothers with other mothers during this time. How are you showing up for the new moms in your life?

Being a mother is not a diagnosis. Achy muscles, low back and pelvic pain, fatigue, depression, brain fog: these are just some of the symptoms that people tend to dismiss during motherhood. Important postnatal indicators are shrugged off as something that comes with the territory of being a mother. Its our job to empower women to treat their bodies the same way they did during pregnancy. With love, care and compassionnot as a consequence for having a baby.... You dont have to be a mom to treat moms. But you do need to understand the vulnerability she may feel when coming to you for support. This is why GrowCo is so much more than postnatal rehab. Its a chance for women to be seen, heard, and understood. As a GrowCo practitioner, you let her know that, yes, self-care is hard, but Im here to help you make it a priority so you can show up for your kids in the best way possible. My post partum check up at @anchor.here Audra has, and will continue to get her regular check ups and it’s important I do too. With long-term goals like getting back to running, spin and CrossFit - not to mention wanting to avoid incontinence and/or low back and pelvic pain down the line - I need to ensure my core and pelvic floor are rehabbed appropriately.... The first step is this assessment I had by Dr. @ksikura which helps me to establish a baseline starting point for rehab, and therefore determine when I’m ready to gradually return to the activities I love to do. If you’ve been following my pregnancy journey you’ll remember that my diastasis was 4-fingers wide before I gave birth! Now, its one finger wide but you can see in the video I’m not able to generate a ton of tension at the midline (linea alba) as Dr. Karlie can sink her fingers in quite deep. So, I’m starting with focused breathwork to re-establish a connection to my core, and moving through the #GROWCO rehab program. I’ll continue to have appointments to check my progress and then slowly return to running, spinning and CrossFit. Postpartum recovery sprained ankle recovery. As a woman, your body is treated with the upmost respect during the 9+ months your baby is growing inside of you. An army of medical professionals work tirelessly to support your health throughout the journey. But after the birth, you’re sent home with nothing more than a peri bottle and instructions to rest. Every birth experience is different and beautiful. But it also causes trauma to the body.... In any other clinical setting, this type of distress would immediately be addressed with a healing protocol. But the majority of women are sent home to navigate painful recoveries while dealing with massive hormonal fluctuations and the realities of caring for a newborn. So often we hear new mothers say they are surviving these first moments of motherhood, when they should be thriving. It’s time we SUPPORT mothers in their healing. Reflecting on a successful @growco.official weekend . This last seminar was incredibly special with 25 health care professionals joining myself, and my colleagues @themotherdoctor @suzdickie @ksikura and @drlydiabrodie to learn our clinical framework for post partum rehab. . The doctors told me they:... liked the different speakers...and the way that the content was presented (very digestible and directly applicable) . and had A-HA moments such as: I found it very interesting to learn how important our role is in identifying and potentially preventing this. . And feel-good feedback like: honestly the best course Ive been to! . Its incredible to know just how many more women will now be getting the care they deserve today and everyday thank you for being a part of this movement to raise the standard of care for part partum women See more

You can still work on your core throughout pregnancy! . This is diaphragmatic breathing + deep core engagement and it can really help to: stay connected to the deep core muscles during pregnancy increase strength... limit diastasis recti decrease low back pain and even set you up for a stronger post partum recovery! . Heres how . Inhale and relax your midsection + pelvic floor Im in tabletop position here and using gravity to my advantage. Exhale and hug the baby in and up, and add a lift (kegel) through the pelvic floor. . This is where you should start check back for advancements + progressions . . . #prenatal #postpartum #fitness #fitpregnancy #diastasisrecti #postpartumrehab #GROWCO See more

Abdominal fascia regains only 51-59% of tensile strength at 6-weeks post c-section . A c-section is major abdominal surgery. But mom doesnt to get to kick her feet up, surf netflix & relax while shes healing shes navigating sleep deprivation, feeding, hormonal changes and all that comes with a new baby. . For many women, there is very little guidance given after a c-section especially when it comes to getting back to physical activity. Post partum recovery is vital a...nd return to exercise should not be rushed. . We emphasize assessment and treatment beyond the 6 week check up. Even years later, a build up of scar tissue at the incision site can limit normal function, and range of motion. . There is much that can be done to improve thick scar tissue at the incision site and the associated core and/or pelvic floor dysfunction although it may look beautifully healed externally, the multi-layered abdominal tissue may need some professional guidance and focused work. . . . #csection #postpartum #health #fitmom #GROWCO #healthymom reference: ceydeli et al 2008 See more

#TBT one year ago with the Georgina Young Entrepreneur of the Year award. . This award meant SO much to me because it was earned in the same year as giving birth to my first child. Being a mom is hard. Building a career Im proud of can be stressful.... . I always knew I wanted to have kids and also have a meaningful career. But when youre a new mom + self-employed it can be really scary, isolating and overwhelming trying to navigate what your new normal looks like. . Ive seen a meme about a mom who is at work constantly thinking about her kids, and home with her kids constantly thinking about work. . Am I doing enough? Am I a bad mom for going to work with such a young baby? Does my work team think Im lazy for spending time with my baby? . ...were the constant thoughts (and still are tbh). . But I thought I might share some of my biggest lessons as a working mom: . Its ok to prioritize the to-do list is long, never-ending, really. Some things need immediate attention, some things can wait. You are not bound by other peoples timelines. . Giving myself - and others - grace I understand people better now. Before Logan, I didnt get it. I did not understand that a parent had lived a full day before they even arrived at work or just how hard getting to an appointment on time actually could be. I get it now (and I think youre amazing). . Do the impossible Ive looked at tasks, weeks and events that have come up in my life as downright IMPOSSIBLE. But Ive survived 100% of the impossible days so far. . My needs matter, too your best advocate for you, is you. Sometimes, there is very little attention given to a postpartum mothers needs. Setting boundaries, and standing up for yourself to recover, unwind and connect with loved ones allows you to show up as the best you. . Conditions for all women will improve when there are more women in leadership roles giving strong and powerful voice to their needs and concerns. - @sherylsandberg . A lot of amazing things in my life have first shown up disguised as struggle. . Ive learned, that rather than seeing struggle & running away to instead lean into it and use it as the most powerful opportunity for transformation. .... In the gym the workouts that cause you to struggle the most are often the ones that elevate your fitness to new heights. . In life when struggle presents, instead of thinking why me? thinking why not me? I have the tools + resources to endure this. . Its been incredibly motivating to be surrounded by strong minded people each undoubtedly enduring their own struggle but building, growing and nurturing their mental fortitude to soldier on and prevail stronger, more resilient, happier & healthier . To you out there in the middle of your own struggle but refusing to quit know that every time you move forward you are forming new synapses and neural networks and are quite literally a STRONGER person for your efforts. . Every time you endure struggle and refuse to quit is like a training rep for your brain. . YOU GOT THIS See more

Why didnt anyone tell me about... Why does no one talk about.. . I asked in regards to motherhood 100x after Logan came into this world I know youve probably felt the same way, too. .... Talking with @themotherdoctor today about this topic we wondered is there anything that can truly prepare you for transition into motherhood? are our brains even capable of understanding? . I know I thought that being a resilient and gritty person would get me through but theres so much more to it than that. . While I dont have the exact answer to this, heres what I do know: . Ladies, when you are pregnant, and especially with your first, your brain is literally undergoing neural remodelling that is so distinct it was possible for a team of researchers to identify mothers just from their brain scans. . Pregnancy is often compared to puberty because of the similar surge in sex hormones. What research has shown when looking at adolescents is that their brains are undergoing gray matter pruning a decrease in gray matter volume as brains are shaped into an adult one. This pruning actually is a fine tuning and allows for more specialized function. . A similar sort of thing happens after a womans first pregnancy except sub out the teenage sleep in for massive sleep deprivation, and the angst for anxiety that comes with caring for your newborn child (I say this a bit tongue in cheek but its true!) . What one particular study found (because there isnt a whole heck of a lot of research in this area) is that pregnancy renders substantial changes in brain structure, primarily reductions in gray matter (GM) volume in regions subserving social cognition. . What this means for you? rest when you can, momma set boundaries for yourself & family prioritize your nutrition, and a healthy dose of movement connect with other moms ask for help (I mean it) . Of note this is the first study that provided evidence that pregnancy confers long-lasting changes in a woman's brain. Definitely an area of more research needed. . Study Referenced: E Hoelzema 2017 pregnancy leads to long lasting changes in brain structure . . #pregnancy #postpartum #healthymom #mombrain

This boy has changed my identity but Im not entirely consumed by motherhood.... Im still a person that does other stuff....But EVERYTHING is held up against it. . When Im thinking about my own happiness my own success... my own health the kind of friend I am the kind of wife I am all of it is related back to the influence on my sons life. . Its a pretty good thing being a parent. Its absolutely WILD. Its empowering. It shakes you to your core. It makes you stronger and weaker simultaneously. You feel strong and empowered but also incredibly vulnerable to have something so beloved outside of yourself. . Fitness during pregnancy, for me, is sticking with habits I enjoy, continuing to support my physical + mental health and literal training for an upcoming, unknown, intense athletic event labour + delivery . When the nurse was prompting me to push with Logan, going into hour 2, my trust in my own strength kept me going. She instructed me with every contraction youre going to push for 10 seconds, and as she counted down 10, 9, 8... I thought to myself this is just like i...nterval training . But seriously, the strength + resiliency Ive learned from sport and fitness directly impacted my mentality during my delivery. . The other day one of my newly post partum patients shared with me that as she was pushing, she was yelling CROSSFITTTT! in her head. Hilarious, we know! But also amazing. . Its what supported and carried her through one of the most wild, vulnerable & exhausting experiences in life. . Thats why fitness (any kind, really) during pregnancy is so important. And also this . The 2019 Canadian Guideline for Physical Activity throughout Pregnancy recommends accumulating 150 minutes over a week through a variety of aerobic, resistance training and yoga/gentle stretching. This will: Enhance maternal physical and mental health Fewer newborn complications Decreased risk of preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, hypertension, improved blood glucose Decreased severity of lumbopelvic pain . Ive chosen modified #CrossFit and #indoorcycling to support my physical and mental health during my pregnancy. Running after baby . Running increases the force through your body by 1.6-2.5x your bodyweight. Lets take a 130lb woman this means your body has to manage & absorb 325lbs with every running step you take! . Managing this load requires an increase in intra-abdominal pressure to support your pelvic organs and keep you from leaking. This highlights the importance of a strong pelvic floor that contracts with proper speed & co-ordination.... . If your pelvic floor is weak, less coordinated or dysfunctional, running can bring on pain, incontinence & further damage tissue that is still healing from child birth. . Looking at vaginal birth, we know that all women experience some level of muscle damage and even denervation. One study found partial denervation of the pelvic floor in most women......often the first step along a path leading to prolapse or stress incontinence. . Recent post natal run guidelines recommend low impact exercise only in the first 12 weeks post partum, followed by a gradual return to running program in months 3-6. . Its in the best interest of mom to seek out an assessment for her core & pelvic health, as well as load management + strength testing before return to full running. . In closing, I want to tell you that Im sharing this information because I love you. I want you to know how unbelievable your female body is. You have grown and birthed a freakin human! Your body has the most incredible ability to heal but it needs the right environment to do so. In our culture that encourages and praises the bounce back, women are engaging in activity that is often prolonging their healing or doing damage where symptoms arise years later. I share this information with you to encourage you to please give yourself that space & time needed to heal. . Like. Share. TAG a momma below . Women everywhere are suffering from physical, mental & emotional pain stemming from pregnancy & childbirth. . Many are ailments that could easily be recognized & prevented in the early weeks post partum but go undetected because of a significant gap in the knowledge of caring for post partum women. . Let me explain, after a decade of post secondary & graduate education dedicated solely to the human body, I was left with brilliant techniques to heal shoulder pain, knee inju...ries & ankle sprains but when it come to caring for a woman after birth n o t h i n g. . We are talking women presenting with torn pelvic floor muscles, after major abdominal surgery (c-section), with inconvenience, prolapse, pelvic pain etc. but its overlooked or dismissed as the side effects of being a mom. . Weve accepted a 6-week check up as an indication of back to full health when really, its simply a measure of baseline survival. Dont get me wrong, we are SO lucky to have FREE access to this level of care here in Canada but I contend we can do better for women and we WILL do better for women. @drallicain . Last night I was joined by my colleagues at @anchor.here and a group of women who are all part of the mission to raise the standard of post partum care. #TALKINGTONEWMOMS . I dont talk about weight loss, or getting your pre-baby body back with my post natal patients. . I understand and respect the desire to fit into certain clothes & feel good in your own skin that is certainly important!... But I think honouring where youre at, giving yourself space to heal and letting your organs shift back into place is pretty important, too. . Here are some compliments you can give a new mom that have nothing to do with the way she looks: . You are so strong! I admire how youre handling this transition You are giving baby everything he needs, momma! Motherhood looks great on you! Holy sh*t, I cant believe you made a human! . Pick one of those and watch how a new momma lights up in response . . . #mom #momlife #postpartum #momandbaby #health #healthymom #healthybaby #respect #birth #pregnancy #GROWCO #momsofinstagram See more

#Repost @drmichelleperis Would you run a marathon without taking the time to train your body, and then expect it to be totally unaffected afterwards? Of course not! When we approach pregnancy, labour and postpartum with the same level of care and preparation, we are stronger and better equipped to handle the uncertainty that comes with having a baby. In this episode Dr. Cain shares her knowledge and experience about assisting women through pregnancy and postpartum..., bringing down the myth that suffering comes hand in hand with pregnancy, and giving the details of how a comprehensive and integrative approach to healing and maintaining health, can transform women's experience in this magical time of their lives as well as empowering them in their own bodies. I LOVE providing chiropractic care for babies Its a population that cannot directly tell you what they are feeling or experiencing and yet they... do. They tell you with their lack of head movement or torticollis, with their constipation, their colicky cry, their hatred of tummy time, poor sleep patterns, difficulty latching with breastfeeding etc. These are symptoms. I dont treat these symptoms. I treat the spine and once the misalignments are found and corrected the nervous system functions optimally and these symptoms often improve. The birth process alone has been shown to cause misalignments in 90% of babies! I also care for babies with no symptoms and provide wellness care where we make sure the spine is moving optimally through every mile stone. By the time a baby is 2 they fall on their butt over 2000X! Thats a lot of impact on their little spines. Chiropractic for children is gentle, safe and non-invasive So tell me... Do you have any questions about chiro and paediatrics? And How can I support you? I work @gigglypandababyspa on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays where we treat children and the WHOLE family #raisinghealthykids #chiro #chiropracticadjustment #chiropracticandbabies #chirokids #webstertechnique #icpa #icpa4kids #spinalhealth #spinalcare #healthyspines #childrenarethefuture #tummytimefun #mississaugamoms #torontochiropractor #torontomoms #babyhealth #healthybabies #wellnessmadesimple #getadjusted #positivevibes #healthypregnancy #empoweringwomen #pregnancychiropractor #pediatricchiropractor #motherhoodinspired #torontohealth #womenshealthcoach #realmotherhood #mississaugakids See more

The Fall 2019 post partum rehab course started today at @anchor.here. . These mommas spent the morning investing in t h e m s e l v e s . From 3 weeks post partum to 24 months were all in this with the same goals in mind: healthy mom, healthy baby.... . It can feel like an insurmountable task: packing up everything for baby, getting yourself dressed and ready to go, into and out of the car and settling into the studio. Most moms have already lived a full day by 8am! . So, thank you for your trust. For allowing me to be your doctor, your movement educator and best of all, your friend. And most of all, thank you for showing up for YOU. . I do not take this role for granted. I am here for you! (and the baby snuggles) .
