How do you spend the first couple minutes after waking? Do you reach straight for your cell phone?(and no judgement! I’ve done this as well - but trying to stay away from for reasons below ) Try these tips if you are looking to optimize your mood and cortisol rhythm:... Open your curtains first thing in the morning to let natural sunlight in Pick up your journal/a piece of paper and write down three things you are grateful for Pour a cup of coffee/tea and enjoy it outdoors, even if it is for a couple minutes, while the weather is still nice out! What do you do in the morning that has had an impact on your mood and energy? See more

How I help you I use a holistic approach to offer a new perspective on your health and the symptoms you may be experiencing, such as fatigue, digestive concerns, and more. Even prior to your initial visit, I send you a set of intake forms to fill out that answer many detailed questions about you, your history, symptoms you are experiencing and your goals.... During your initial visit, I spend an hour with you asking you questions about various systems and other symptoms you may experience that may be contributing to your presenting concern. My goal is to work towards treating the root cause of why you are experiencing your symptoms. I commonly ask about: Gut health Diet Sleep Exercise Stress Energy Menstrual Cycle And more During the initial intake, I pick up on clues to help create a treatment plan that works best for you. The tools that I use include: Comprehensive laboratory testing Dietary counselling Lifestyle tips Nutritional supplements Herbal therapies Acupuncture IV therapies Nutrient injections And more If you have any more questions about what I do and how I can help you, send me a DM to chat more. Does anyone else feel like August was spent in vacation mode? Between days spent in clinic seeing patients, I have been trying to make the most of the last bit of summer and spending lots of time in nature, including a camping trip to Algonquin. September is often looked at as a new beginning as kids and teachers are going back to school, new routines are set and transitions occur in the workplace. ... What will your new routine look like? Has prioritizing your health been lingering in the back of your mind? Are you experiencing fatigue, digestive concerns, or other symptoms you’ve been meaning to take control of and get to the root cause of? If so, let’s make it happen for you. DM me to talk more about how I can support you in addressing your symptoms and achieving your health goals. #naturopathicdoctor #healthyliving #hormonebalance #guthealth #burnoutrecovery #stressmanagement #anxietyrelief #healthylifestyle #mississauganaturopath #torontonaturopath #drsetniknd

What does your work environment look like? Creating a calm work environment is one approach to help manage chronic stress.... I love adding plants to my workspace to have a little dose of nature. Did you know plants in an office space has been associated with less stress? Other things I like to implement are having a clutter free desk, essential oil diffusers and burning incense sticks at the home office. What are some things you implement to create a calming office space?

Homemade Vegan Cesar Dressing Recipe As promised, here is the recipe for the homemade vegan Cesar dressing I tried this past weekend. This recipe is from @minimalistbaker (as many of my patients or those who know me well know how much I love her recipes)... I didn’t have capers on hand as the initial recipe called for and used kalamata olives instead but it turned out quite yummy Bonus points: This is super quick to put together. In a bowl whisk together: 1/4 cup of hummus (homemade or store bought) 1 teaspoon of spicy mustard 1/2 teaspoon of lemon zest 2 teaspoons of lemon juice 2 teaspoons of minced kalamata olives with 3 teaspoons of the brine 4 garlic cloves minced 1 tablespoon of olive oil (or so to desired creaminess) Add water to reach desired consistency If you’ve given it a try, let me know how you liked it! Have you been noticing changes to your hair lately? More hair falling out during your shower? Seeing your scalp more as you tie your hair up? Round patches of missing hair coming out of nowhere? ... There are many causes and underlying reasons as to why you may be losing your hair. This is something I see often in women who are overworked and over stressed. Chronic stress, which is a risk factor alone, can lead to: hormonal imbalances gut and digestive issues which leads to less absorption of important vitamins and minerals for your hair Not enough time to make healthy meals with a diverse set of vitamins, minerals and healthy proteins exacerbation of an underlying condition such as autoimmunity this list is only start - there are many more to be explored. It is important to find the cause of what is causing your hair loss to effectively address it and work towards having healthy and full hair again. If you are experiencing hair loss and want to investigate the root of what is going on, send me a DM to chat more. See more

Friendly reminder to check in on your body/mind to see if it needs a little care Though I am slowly transitioning back into in-person visits (which usually entails lots of moving around the clinic), working from home for the past three months meant sitting by the desk much longer than usual. This past week my piriformis muscle has been subtly but consistently reminding me to take more frequent breaks from sitting. When you sit for prolonged periods of tim...e, certain muscles in the gluteal region can tense up and cause a nagging pain/tension/discomfort. (Literally, a pain in the butt!) I decided to carve some time to do a low back/piriformis focused yoga stretch and already I’m feeling a bit better. Slowing down and catering to your body’s needs can go a long way. By listening to my body and addressing this earlier on, I can get back to getting my work done without a constant nagging tension and get my work done more effectively. This was also a nice reminder to be taking breaks more often. I generally recommend taking a 5 minute break every hour. For some, this may be a lot to start so set a realistic goal that works with you (something is better than nothing!) During these breaks you can: Refill your glass of water Make yourself some tea Do a little walk around your home Do a couple stretches If your pain does not go away it would be best to have a proper assessment by a licensed practitioner and some additional support such as acupuncture, targeted exercises, stretches and more if deemed appropriate. Send me a DM if you’re interested in learning more. See more

Why Did I Become a Naturopathic Doctor? As soon as I heard about the profession, I just knew it was meant to be. I didn’t really understand why at the time. I found out about naturopathic medicine as I started my university degree and it completely aligned with the values I grew up with and with my love for nutrition. As I continue to help my patients, I understand how being a naturopathic doctor allows me to do what I love which is:... To hold space To connect with others To empower others to feel better I feel so lucky I get to do this in my profession everyday. I am truly grateful to feel like when I am doing my work, it doesn’t feel like work. I am so grateful for the connections I get to make with my patients, for them entrusting me to support them and celebrating together once they start feeling better. If you have any questions about naturopathic medicine and what I do, I’d be happy to answer them. Feel free to send me a DM or ask them below. #naturopathicmedicineweek #naturopathicdoctor #mississauganaturopath #torontonaturopath #healthyliving #natmedweek #natmedweek2020 #drsetniknd See more

This past week was spent in Costa Rica being immersed in what I love most: Great food Friendly & kind-hearted people And nature ... It was really interesting to see the profound difference in the lifestyle in Costa Rica vs the GTA. Costa Rica is home to a blue zone, meaning that there are communities there where many people live to 100 years of age. It is thought that the secret to their longevity may be due to: Strong sense of purpose Drinking mineralized water Keeping a focus on family Eating a light dinner with mostly vegetables and only 5% of diet being meat fish and poultry Maintaining social networks Keeping physically active and a having a sense of pride in work and chores. Spending an optimal amount of time in the sun Unfortunately, much of this is missing in our culture. It takes a lot of effort to maintain a sense of community and prioritize things aside from work. I have a personal purpose to help those caught in the overworked and overstressed lifestyle bring balance back to their lives. My favourite part of what I do is guiding people to prioritize themselves and making healthy choices in, seemingly simple but things easily taken for granted, aspects such as diet, lifestyle, sleep and stress. I strive to encourage others to create a life of abundance and connection and fill their days with things that bring them joy. It’s amazing to see that once people start aligning and making these changes, everything starts to fall into place. See more

My Travelling Essential I try to pack as little as possible when travelling and usually travel only with carryons. That being said, a supplement I always make sure I make room for and pack with me is a probiotic.... The most common health complaint while travelling is changes in bowel habits. A great way to prevent this is to take a probiotic daily while you are travelling. Most travel probiotics come with Saccharomyces boulardii which is a shelf stable yeast. It is great for regulating bowel function as well as preventing any unpleasant changes to gut function while travelling. #travelessentials #travelsupplements #probioticbenefits #guthealth #torontonaturopath #mississauganaturopath #drsetniknd See more

The last couple of days were spent out of office and in Winnipeg presenting educational seminars with @sisuvitamins One of the things that I love about being a Naturopathic Doctor is the innate educational component. Part of what I do and am passionate about on a day to day basis is empowering others and educating others on how to lead a healthier life.... I had a great time in Winnipeg and was really impressed with how friendly people were and how often strangers initiated conversation. A little positive energy that I’m looking forward to bring back to Toronto #healthyliving #businesstravel #friendlymanitoba #healthspeaker #mississauganaturopath #torontonaturopath #empoweringothers #drsetniknd
