Attended an online lecture for a few hours this afternoon focused on Naturopathic approaches to cancer care and treatment fundamentals. It was a great lecture provided by Dr McKinney out in BC. I always do my best to stay up to date on current information so I can offer the best advice to my patients! #cancernaturopath #oakvillenaturopath #cancercare #stayinguptodate

So what does one of the most powerful people in the world get prescribed to help his body's response in light of testing positive for covid (by his physician Dr Sean Conley as quoted by Bloomberg Trump Heading for Stay in Military Hospital for Covid Treatment by Fabian/Jacobs). Antibodies, famotidine, aspirin, zinc, vitamin D and melatonin. Hmmm, zinc, vitamin D and melatonin you say. I'm not publicly saying they are useful or not, I'm just saying that's what one of the mos...t powerful people in the world is being told to take (see the publication by Bloomberg October 2, 2020). ND's in Ontario have been essentially gagged from publicly speaking about things such as this by the regulatory body in the province with regards to the immune system and any relation to covid. But again, I will bring attention especially to the fact that one of the most powerful people has been told to take zinc and vitamin D. I'm not saying that anyone else should necessarily take these, but pointing out that's what the president of the USA has been recommended to take in light of him testing positive for covid. Oh, and Dr. Fauci has also been quoted as saying he takes vitamin D as well, one of the world's leading experts on infectious disease. That’s all I’m saying. #vitamind #zinc #healthawareness2020 See more

Smoothie tips! Just finished a workout and thought I’d share! Instead of always using banana to give some substance to your smoothie, try replacing it with avocado, cooked sweet potato or pure pureed pumpkin. These are higher in fibre and less glycemic! As another healthy addition, try adding in pieces of raw or lightly cooked zucchiniit won’t change the flavour of your smoothie very much! #healthysmoothies #naturopath #smoothieideas #oakvillenaturopath #healthychoices

I was fortunate enough to have a week to immerse myself in nature. It is truly great for the mind, body and soul. Connecting with nature, whether for a long hike, a picnic or just a quick walk on a local trail can help to calm the mind, improve mood, release stress, lower cortisol levels, reduce blood pressure and improve the immune system. It’s something I recommend to all of my patients! Healthier body = healthier mind, healthier mind = healthier body. Get out and enjoy nature while the weather is still fantastic! #naturopath #cancernaturopath ##cancercare #mindbodyhealth #enjoynature

It’s mum’s season in gardens! Most people don’t realize that Chrysanthemum flowers can be used medicinally. Most commonly it is used as a tea, with the white and yellow varieties used most. Chrysanthemum can help alleviate high blood pressure, headaches, insomnia, dizziness and help with symptoms of a cold. In traditional Chinese medicine it is considered to be slightly cooling and has a combination of pungent, bitter and sweet properites. It will clear heat, help to detoxify, disperses wind, pacifies the liver and enhances vision. Steep 6-8 dried flowers per cup for 2-3 minutes (and the flowers can be re-steeped 3 or 4 more times).

A recent safety alert issued by Health Canada. Currently there IS NOT an accurate enough Covid-19 test kit or blood test to detect antibodies in the blood of people to indicate prior exposure to the novel coronavirus. Health Canada has yet to approve any such test. That hasn't stopped some companies from marketing such kits however. They are not reliable enough to give you a definitive answer so do not rely on such tests to determine if you have been exposed to the virus. These tests are unreliable and may indicate that you have been exposed when in fact you were not, or in some cases they may indicate that you have not been exposed when in fact you were. https://healthycanadians.gc.ca/recall-aler//73003a-eng.php

An alarming study following over 50,000 women for 8 years has found an association of drinking dairy regularly to an increased risk of breast cancer (alarming but not really that surprising for many practitioners I'm sure). And multiple research studies have also linked dairy intake to increased risk of prostate cancer (and poorer outcomes with treatment). I'm sure the dairy industry will have something to say about that in trying to convince everyone that dairy is still actually good for you. https://www.ctvnews.ca//one-cup-of-milk-per-day-associated

To think how hygiene and modern medicine changed the world! Many of these ailments today are manageable and preventable, and certainly not fatal.

One more post for those jumping into New Year's work outs (and hopefully continuing beyond) :) There are a lot of supplements on the market promising to give you results in the gym, and most of them don't really help. This video takes you through a few that have definitely been shown to be useful, and some of the popular ones to avoid wasting your money on. The video was very well put together in my opinion, giving very clear explanations and siting numerous studies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwvTXmBJSnw

With New Year resolutions comes a lot of exercise. And sometimes with exercise comes injury. Here’s a good article explaining what the science has shown for years now Icing an injury delays healing and is counter productive. Perhaps using it briefly right when the injury happens to reduce some of the acute pain and swelling is fine, but extensive use of cold packs or ice on an injury will prevent the injury from healing because it suppresses the inflammatory response necessary for tissue to heal. The article goes on to discuss better options. Ice being useful for helping the body resolve injury has been debunked by science. https://www.menshealth.com/f/a29710918/icing-sore-muscles/

I’ve never been one to jump on the newest shiniest supplements coming to market. Many of the more experienced ND’s stick with recommending brands that they’ve come to trust over the years (and I don’t sell any, I just recommend them). Brands that have proven themselves trustworthy and effective. Recently UDream, a newer sleep supplement, was found to have a ‘contaminant’ structurally similar to a prescription sleep medication. The company says it doesn’t know how it got i...nto the product but I call foul. The man in this news report claims the product caused his heart attack, which has not been proven and is complete conjecture, but the point is there was a medication in the product that shouldn't have been there that can interact with other medications or cause problems for some people on it's own. It's always a good idea to speak to an ND or other health care professional before taking any supplements. https://globalnews.ca//6326361/u-dream-sleep-aid-consumers/ See more

An impressive, fairly large study out of Spain demonstrating it's more effective to take blood pressure medication before bed rather than in the morning. Published in the European Heart Journal. https://www.ctvnews.ca//you-might-want-to-change-the-time-
