Please be advised that the Drayton Valley Museum and its grounds will be closed this summer. The Board of Directors for the Museum made the difficult decision to remain closed due to ongoing plans for internal revitalization in the Museum, and health and safety concerns for our volunteers, seasonal staff, and public amidst COVID-19. Our volunteers and staff will be on-site this summer to complete major restorations to our buildings, create new exhibits, and conduct intensive... research projects this summer. They will be able to answer and return your calls and emails regarding any questions, donations, or research requests. This closure is temporary, and we will be re-opening spring 2021 with new exhibits and programs for you and your family! Though our facilities and grounds are closed, we remain committed to delivering you local history online. We will be bringing you new content through our social media all summer, including new online family-fun programs, activities, and local history facts. Stay tuned in to our social media for all of our local history tidbits, puzzles, and games for you and your family! If you have questions, donation offers, or research requests, please call us at (780) 542-5482 or email us at [email protected].

Please take one minute today at 11:00 am to remember those who fought for our freedom and died on the battlefield. Lest we forget!

From the Nov. 5 Free Press: THE GREAT ESCAPE (Submitted Ron Cameron) During WWII the Nazis built many Prisoner of War (POW) camps in Europe. Stalag Luft III was... one of those camps, and it was built near Sagan, Poland. There are many terrific stories involvingCanadians in WWII. The Great Escape from Stalag Luft III is one of those stories, and the Drayton Valley area has a connection to it. Bill Cameron (my uncle), who grew up just west of Rocky Rapids, was one of 80 prisoners who, on March 24, 1944, escaped from Stalag Luft III. The Drayton Valley Museum are looking for any information regarding this location 4908 49 Street which sits right behind Canton Restaurant. Mrs Kobernick remembers it being a storage building for the schools. Others remember that the High School janitor, Gordon McManus, lived in it. It’s appearance suggests it was one of the country schools that got moved in when the oil boom hit. ... We have eliminated some country schools as being the wrong structure or they are being proposed some other way, home, barn, etc. Anyone who could tell us more would be greatly appreciated.
