Emotional Stress and the Nerve System To watch the video click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DpusqNfE2rA So of all the causes of pressure in the spine - emotional stress is the most common and most intense. Especially with so much stress in the world today - more and more people are having health problems related to their spine and nerve system.... So what are sources of stress that could affect the spine? Stress can come from so many sources: 1. Internal - dealing with work, school, relationships (including family or friends), financial, worrying about the past or the future. 2. External - concerns about your city, country or the world politically, environmentally or economically. Anxiety about how the world will be tomorrow or for years to come. Feeling stressed can trigger emotions such as anger, feeling overwhelmed, sadness, chronic tension, confusion and even grief. So how does this affect the nerve system? Overstimulation from stress can cause the nerve system to be overactive and get "stuck". This overactivity can lead to muscles contracting, stress hormones being released, low energy, pain in the body, poor mood, and even affect the quality of sleep. What are things you can do to help remove stress from the nerve system? 1. Make time for deep breathing. Before bed is ideal since this will help you sleep better. 2. Stretching. Any time we stretch we remove tension from the body and the spine - and this helps the mind and body heal. 3. Journalling - whatever you are feeling - get it out on paper. Great way to help with stress and one of my favourites. 4. Talk to someone you trust - a family member or friend. You may even need to hire a professional. 5. Getting adjusted - one of the biggest benefits of Chiropractic care is that it helps remove stress from the nerve system. It helps you function at a higher level so you think more clearly and feel more relaxed. Stress will always be part of our lives. There are 3 Major Causes of Damage to the Nerve System. Physical, Chemical and Emotional. This article will focus on Physical Stress. So what are examples of physical stress on your spine and nerve system?... Sleep - the way you sleep will impact your spine. Sleeping on your back or side is best. Sleeping on your stomach is not healthy. Also, try to make sure your mattress and pillow are more on the firm side. Exercise - excessive jumping on a hard surface can be damaging to your lower spine. Deadlifts and squats should also be avoided or done with extreme caution. Heavyweights can be very dangerous for your spine. So choose a weight that is easy to work with. High reps with light weights will always be safer than few reps with heavier weights. Also treadmills seem quite hard on the joints of the lower body. Consider an elliptical or stationary bike. A rowing machine is also another great workout machine as well. Try to keep your workouts to 30 minutes maximum as workouts longer than this may lead to injury. Finally have a rest day. Working out 3 to 6 days a week is fine. Computer - using a computer all day is very hard on the spine. Try to get up every hour to stretch or get a glass of water. Consider doing some work on a counter with a laptop if you work from home. Or order a standing desk to keep you healthy. Be careful if you game or surf the internet after work or school as this will make spinal problems more likely. Lifting/Bending - most of the damage from heavy lifting/bending is caused by being in a rush and doing too much at one time. Slow down while lifting the heavy object. Stretch before and after lifting. If you can always try to get help with heavier objects. Two people are always safer than one. One of My Favourite Habits One of my favourite habits that I have developed over time is writing in a journal - daily. I might miss once in a while - but it has become very rare. So why is this process so amazing?... It gives you a chance to stop and reflect. Almost like having a moment to catch your breath. And you can customize it to fit your needs. I can tell you some of the most successful people I have known have a habit of thinking and reflecting on their lives. And you too can experience some great breakthroughs with journaling. What are some of the specific benefits of journaling? A sense of more peace and calm with less anxiety. A feeling of hopefulness. A sense that there are things you can do to make your life better. So what goes in the journal? Anything you want. But I really think it's a great place to focus on your goals and challenges. By venting your concerns you can help release stress from your system - which is one of the biggest things that affects your spine and nerve system. Do I need to buy a fancy journal? Not really. But I would buy a journal that inspires you and gives you enough space to write and maybe even draw. Do I share my journal with anyone? My suggestion - no. Keep it private. But if you feel inspired of course you can share any material you wish. Do I need to spend an hour every morning? Nope. Again see what works for you. You can spend a few minutes or even more than an hour. Choose an amount of time that works for your lifestyle. You may even feel rushed in the morning and prefer to journal at night before bed. Your Nutrition for 2021 Next Topic: Food. What New Years Plan would be complete without mentioning food.... Here are some tips to get started: 1. Make real food a priority. Try to buy at least 80% real food. Real veggies, fruit and protein. Regardless of how you eat - for most people this makes sense. 2. Drink water. I have to admit I could be better in this category. Try to drink water 80% of the time when you have a drink. Cold, hot whatever works for you just make this a priority. 3. Eat healthy food in small portions every few hours. I know lots of people are fasting for long hours. If this works great. But my best recommendation is high frequency and low portions. 4. Design a plan. Are you constantly wondering what to eat? Does thinking of what to eat stress you out? Make time to plan your meals. To get started visit www.drbhasin.com and click on the Nutrition Tab. I have a smoothie recipe and a 7-day food plan for veg and non-veg people. Maybe even come up with simple healthy options for the New Year. Remember simplicty equal compliance. 5. Be concious of what you eat. They are certain foods that make us feel great - and then there are foods that really bring us down. Start making a list of foods that make you feel awesome - and foods that make you feel bloated, acidic or tired. Also make a note of when you eat and feel your best. This one tip is huge if you follow it. Bonus Tip: I've been using an app called Instacart to have food delivered to my home and I really love it! There are fees of course but I really enjoy the time I'm saving. There is a another app called Voila which is run by Sobey's. Little more affordable but not as fast. It's hard to believe but 2020 is almost over. I do hope you and your family are safe and doing well. To say it's been a tough year is a huge understatement. The way we work, the way we communicate, the way we shop and the way exercise has all changed. And the reality is - we don't know how long this will all last for.... So - we need to first reflect. Then maximize. I will be giving my recommendations each week on different things you need to access to make 2021 a better year. Topic #1 Your Workstation More people are now working from home then ever. But please consider the following: a) Do you have a designated area to work and study? Or are you using a laptop anywhere you can find space? Please make a clean and focused area for you to be productive. You will be happy you did. b) Do you have a proper chair? Desk? Computer? Are you comfortable? c) Are you taking at least 5 mins once an hour to take a breath and refresh? Drink some water. Grab a healthy snack. Stretch. Listen to music. Do some deep breathing. d) Is your diet clean or could it better better? Visit www.drbhasin.com and click on Nutrition and Diet for ideas on what to eat. There's a smoothie recipe and a 7 day vegan and non-vegan meal plan as well. e) Do you have set hours? It's very tempting to do one more chart, check one more email or just put the finishing touches on your latest project since your computer is always there. But have set hours. Unless it's a big dead line or emergency set some boundaries. Even tell your team that unless it's critical you can't be reached after a set time. Your mind and body will thank you for it. And so will your family. f) If you use a computer a lot - try avoid using it on the weekend. Save Saturday and Sunday as your time to recover and heal from a busy week. MAKE LIFE POWERFUL. Training Never Stops Focusing on getting well obviously makes sense and to be very honest this is where the health journey begins for most of our patients. We are very Blessed and grateful that we have helped thousands of patients in roughly 20 years of practice - but once you get well - then what?... My best recommendation - wellness care also known as maintenance care. Taking care of the body when you feel good may sound like a different philosophy. But it makes sense. Brushing your teeth with a cavity helps - but better to brush before the cavity shows up. Eating good and exercise is good if you have blood pressure challenges or diabetes - but even better to start these habits before the condition starts. Caring for your spine and nerve system when you are suffering and in pain makes sense - but even better to care for your spine before the problem develops. Emotional Health: Can Increase or Decrease Your Rate of Recovery A very common question I get regularly is " Dr. Sandy - is there any way I can get better faster? " or " Wow Dr. Sandy I am better but this is sure taking a long time." What is one big factor that determines the rate of recovery?... Emotional health. People who tend to be more positive, determined and at the same time relaxed seem to heal faster. Those who tend to be stressed out, worried, angry, or depressed seem to take longer to heal. Why? Emotional well-being is largely controlled in the brain. We think of something - and a certain emotion is generated. When our thoughts are stressful - the mind and body go into a state of "flight or fight". Breathing rates change, heart rates generally go up, muscles tighten and thinking clearly becomes difficult. The mind and body are in overwhelm. Short term - this can help you get out of a bad situation. (ie. Avoiding a bike approaching you.) Long-term - staying in this stressful state (with your nerves "stuck" in this pattern) can lead to headaches, dizziness, poor sleep, low energy, feeling anxious, irregular digestion, pain, stiffness or even numbness and tingling.
