When I say HORMONES, what comes to mind?? I get the sense that a lot of women go first to the concept of hormones being either balanced or unbalanced. There is a lot of talk about hormone imbalances out there and it can leave you wondering or even assuming that your hormones must be out of whack. The truth is, its not always as simple as being balanced or not. While there are some conditions that are characterized by a frank imbalance ( PCOS, cushings, hyper/hypothy...roidism ex) the reality is that our hormones are constantly changing, ebbing and flowing both in the short and long term. We make a lot of different hormones in our body, and they all interact with each-other and the environment (our body) they are in. As women we go through several hormonal transitions in our lives; from puberty, to pregnancy and post-partum, to perimenopause and menopause. As a naturopathic doctor focused on womens health and hormonal health ; I see lots of women in my practice coming in to troubleshoot things around the times of transition. When things are changing, it can often leave women feeling out of control, frustrated and uncomfortable in their bodies. My goal is to encourage something I like to call hormonal resiliency. That would include assessing and/or managing any overt imbalances but also focusing on how to help all women feel their best, thrive and work with their hormones during times of transition. So for the month of May ( and into June) I am going to run a hormone bootcamp series on IG. Through a series of posts, stories, and maybe even some IG lives (these scare me!!) - I will share with you what I believe women deserve to know about their hormones. Each week will focus on a different hormone and my goal is to cover everything from the basics of what the hormone does for us, signs and symptoms of functional & overt imbalances, testing considerations, and of course what women can do in the day-to-day to support hormone resiliency. We are kicking things off this week with........CORTISOL! Got a hormone question for me or a topic you want tackled - I wanna know !! So shoot me a comment or DM. See more

Drip, drip, drip. IV nutrients for this doc today! I got a Myers cocktail, which is a combo of B vitamins, magnesium, some amino acids, and Vitamin C. All in an effort to combat PMS and menstrual pain. Ladies - IV magnesium can be magic for painful periods if you are looking for an alternative - take note! Intravenous nutrient infusions can be invaluable as part of treatment plans for a diverse range of health concerns - both acute and chronic. Got questions about IV nutrient therapy?? Let me know in the comments below or DM me.

Yep , I enjoy photo shoots with my @creemorefarmersmarket haul. We live in an area bursting with incredible growers, farmers, and food producers/artisans. Here is some of what I picked up this morning. Lots of organic greens - these make up the base of our meals. Kale, bok choy, spinach , and organic microgreens (not pictured). I also got some fresh herbs ; chervil and lovage - they smelled amazing and taste reminiscent of fennel & celery. Not sure how ill eat them yet ...- but exciting to try new ingredients. The roots here are sunchokes. Also known as jerusalem artichoke, these veggies are an amazing source of prebiotic fibre - aka they power up healthy gut bacteria. Apparently totally delish roasted . Last but not least, organic rye sourdough from brilliant bread in flesherton. This amazing locally made bread is dairy, egg, and yeast free and due to the long- ferment, much easier on the tummy than grocery store bread. Farmers market season my absolute fave. @ Creemore, Ontario See more

#Repost @drjordannd Mental health is partly built from the foods you eat. Protein, healthy fats, nutrient dense foods and antioxidants all play a role in mental health, and we have substantial evidence for how to shape someones diet to support their mental wellbeing. . Heres the catch, its mostly about including things, not taking things out. So much of wellness-speak online is about restrictive diets. Well guess what?... . Restricting carbs in your luteal phase worsens PMS. Restricting calories worsens menstrual cramps. Restricting foods and tracking your diet increases cortisol. . Apart from alcohol (which I post about all the time) theres barely any evidence for taking foods OUT for mental health. We have a wealth of data to put whole, healthy foods in. . Feed your brain. And if you arent sure how, get help. . Drumroll.......the updated Canada Food Guide is here, and its looking pretty darn good. Certainly an improvement from the last guide that most of us grew up with. I have always found it helpful to think about what my plate or bowl should look like/be made up of. I practice individualized nutrition, but the guide offers a solid foundation of information for all ages. Check it out at https://food-guide.canada.ca/en/

The woods are my happy place. I always feel restored, recharged and happier after visiting. With shorter daylight hours, and busy days at clinic, Ive found it more difficult to make time for this - but its so worth prioritizing! Forest bathing or shinrin-yoku in Japanese, has several researched health benefits. Not that you need evidence to get outside and move your body, but the science is pretty cool. Researchers in Japan found 30 minutes of time spent in the forest... resulted in lower cortisol levels (a major stress- response hormone), lower heart rate, lower blood pressure, increased feelings of happiness, and significantly increased immune cell activity. The health effects from one dose of forest time lasted for up to a week! Its one of my favourite prescriptions to give - a little time in nature can have a big impact on our health & well-being. Vitamin-N for the win! See more

Smoothies have been a staple breakfast for me lately. I always try to make 1/4-1/2 the blender veggies - and frozen cauliflower and zucchini have been great (tasteless) additions. What veg are you sneaking in to up your smoothie game? Repost @nutriitional The best smoothie is a low sugar smoothie. These low sugar smoothie ingredients that are also packed with plant power... . Cauliflower Swap out your banana and try this instead to keep your smoothie low sugar and still creamy! I swear, you won't taste it. . Avocado Avocado makes your smoothie super creamy and is a great source of healthy fat and brain and eye protecting carotenoids and multiple forms of vitamin E! . Celery Although celery is mainly water, it's a great source of fiber and vitamin K. . Zucchini Filled with antioxidants, B vitamins, and vitamin C . Spinach Spinach is packed with Vitamin K, A and C, as well as folate, manganese, magnesium, iron, potassium and calcium. Its also a good source of niacin, zinc, protein, fiber and more. . Gut health!! I have been seeing lots of patients (adults & children) with a variety of chronic digestive concerns since starting here at StoneTree Naturopathic. IBS, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Diverticulitis, Constipation, GERD or reflux, and mystery abdominal pain can all be addressed by naturopathic medicine. My approach is to take a careful & complete medical history, discuss your diet and lifestyle practices, consid...er testing that helps uncover the root cause, and use all that info to build a plan that gets you feeling better. Gut health is absolutely foundational to overall health : your energy, immunity, hormones, metabolism, mood, skin...all related to how healthy and functioning the digestive tract is. If you have unresolved tummy troubles or questions about how to optimize your guts, consider stopping in for a free meet the doc consult. Online booking is through the link in my bio:). PS - the book pictured on my desk is a fun & insightful tour of the digestive system. Author is Giulia Enders:) See more

We all know the proverbial saying...F&V consumption prevents disease! Blueberries contain pigments called anthocyanins, and research has consistently shown that these compounds reduce inflammation, prevent cancer cell growth, balance blood sugar and support our cardiovascular health. Adding to the list of health benefits, a recent study showed daily blueberry consumption (250g) increased immunity in endurance athletes. Another study demonstrated that daily consumption improved memory and cognitive health in those over age 65. Eating berries (fresh or frozen) daily have measurable health benefits for everyone, so consider making them a non-negotiable part of your daily routine! #foodmatters #immunity #cancerprevention #blueberriesforthewin

WELL-CHILD VISITS I doing infant and child health check-ups! I know that loads of questions come up for parents regarding your little ones health, so these regular visits are a great way to address these. I do a thorough assessment of your babies physical health, growth & development, and check in on mom & dads health too! Included in all well-child visits are handouts where we track all of babies growth, milestones, and provide info about what you can e...xpect through the first year. I generally recommend a well-child visit 1-2 weeks after birth and then at 2,4,6,9, 12 & 18 months. This can be adapted based on the child/family needs . Proactive healthcare for our little ones can help raise the next generation to be our healthiest, and I am passionate about providing this care to families. While getting lots of sunshine in the summer seems only natural - its important for kids & adults to protect themselves from the strong rays this time of year. This post seemed timely as I recover from a bit too much over the weekend. Sun safety is really important to all skin types, of all ages. Even a few mild burns in childhood can increase the risk of skin cancer later in life. You may have heard about some undesirable ingredients in sunscreen, so at the link in my bio there is a great resource for parents to review products that get an excellent safety rating. Avoid aerosol products (not a good idea to inhale the ingredients), and cover kids with rashguards, wide brimmed hats when in direct sunlight, especially peak hours 10 am - 4 pm.

Bitter foods for better digestion . I found myself teaching a few patients this week about the therapeutic value of bitters and bitter tasting foods. This flavour stimulates the vagus nerve, which can be calming and encourages us to engage our parasympathetic nervous system - AKA - rest & digest! Bitters get our digestive juices, stomach acid and enzymes flowing and really that means youll digest and absorb the nutrients from food properly! It also oft...en means less bloating and discomfort after meals. Try upping your intake of bitter foods and see what you notice. Pretty much all greens are bitter in nature & in season now are arugula, lettuces like mesclun, mustard & dandelion greens, beet tops. My other fave bitter foods include radishes ( grew these little guys in my garden) , kale, radicchio, rapini, grapefruit, and good old lemon water ( citrus rinds are bitter). #eatyourgreens #digestivehealth See more

I admittedly prescribe magnesium lots in practice!! Over the years, I have found so many feel better with a high-quality supplement in their routine. I have seen consistent notable improvements in muscle pain and tension, sleeping issues, anxiety, menstrual pain, migraines & headaches , and digestive regularity. Adults & children alike! This article does a great job explaining where this key mineral can be found in foods. As a Naturopathic Doctor I always emphasize dietary intake, but also recognize that magnesium deficiency is common due to limited diets/picky eating, depleted levels in our food crops, chronic stress, chronic digestive concerns, and common prescription meds. We can direct proper testing to see how your magnesium levels are doing, and offer a variety of supplements both oral & topical for the whole family.

Food Sensitivities!! Certainly a common topic of discussion in a naturopathic doctors office. These reactions to food are caused by our immune systems, but are NOT the same as an allergy. The blood test pictured here, measures the amount of an immunoglobulin called IgG released in response to proteins from foods. Higher IgG levels fuel inflammation in our body, which can contribute to chronic pain, fatigue, skin issues like eczema, migra...ines, difficulty losing weight, infertility, mood issues and a host of digestive complaints. Research is showing that eliminating foods that cause these reactions, helps many people with chronic health concerns. To find out if this kind of testing option would be valuable to your health - visit the link in my bio above to set up a meet the doctor complimentary consult. It can be a great option to help ensure that what you are eating, is your friend and not your foe. #naturopathicdoctor #foodismedicine #functionalmedicine #feelbetter See more

The taste of early summer in Ontario....Strawberry season!! Picked up these little gems from @100milestore , and I was particularly excited that this crop was organic. Unfortunately, strawberries are #1 on the @environmentalworkinggroup Dirty Dozen for pesticides in fruits and veg. From the 2018 report, conventionally grown strawberries had an average of 22 different pesticide residues . I realize it can be a tall order to suggest you & your fa...mily avoid all pesticide exposure...BUT being an informed grocery shopper allows you to prioritize what foods would ideally be purchased organic. You can download the EWGs 2018 guide to Pesticides in Produce from the link in my bio. Another tip to help you buy seasonally, is try shopping at local markets/farmers markets where it is easier to ask questions about how the food was grown/raised. Even if its not certified organic, lots of our local produce is not sprayed, or minimally so. We are so lucky to live in an area where seasonal, local food is abundant - so lets support that as often as possible. @ Creemore, Ontario See more

I find this resource a helpful way to manage my shopping list and prioritize organic produce vs. not. Another helpful strategy for minimizing your families exposure to pesticides is to shop more at local farmers markets, where you can learn more about how the food was grown/raised. We live in an area of abundance with respect to our food choices - so lets eat local & seasonal as often as possible!

Happy Friday! Having a meatless meal to end the week: Vietnamese inspired tofu bowls. Lots of different coloured fresh veg and herbs from my veg patch for healthful antioxidants. Antioxidants protect our cells from environmental/toxin mediated damage & that translates into less inflammation, healthy skin, balanced hormones, and cancer prevention! Food is medicine . Challenge yourself to include 2-3 different colours from fruit &... veg with most meals, and youre well on your way to harnessing some serious plant-based power. . Delicious, but It would not make a great weeknight meal, because of all the chopping . I like to keep meal prep extra simple then. Recipe modified from @we_are_food .
