The secret is out & we couldn’t be happier to share! #18weekspregnant . For those who know me well, know that being a mom has always been my ultimate dream. Children light up my life & I am even known for stealing all the babies in a room, walking around a party like I own them .... But how lucky am I to experience this new chapter with the most amazing & supportive man by my side. I am beyond excited to be on this journey with you @jsookman @ Toronto, Ontario See more

CYCLE SYNCING What if instead of dreading our monthly period, we could actually work with our hormonal fluctuations to improve our mood, reduce PMS, increase energy and avoid stubborn weight gain? By appreciating the hormonal shifts that take place throughout our cycle, we can gain insight into the why behind how we feel throughout the month. Cycle Syncing coined by @alisa.vitti is a relatively new concept based on the idea that by changing our behaviours throughout o...ur cycle, we can support the body through the hormonal rhythms to optimize our hormone function and well-being. . . WHAT IS EATING WELL . Eating well is a form of self-respect & self-care. Screw the monthly pedicure, eating nutrient-dense foods is a much greater way to care for the body & mind. . But what does eating well actually look like? Well, that may be different for everyone, but no matter who you are, eating well should include:... high-quality, bioavailable protein limited or NO processed food (foods found in forms you could never find in nature; these mostly come in boxes) no added sugars abundant, brightly coloured vegetables healthy fats (from fatty fish, eggs, avocados, nuts & seeds, extra-virgin olive oil, and grass-fed meat) eating large meals that leave you feeling satiated and not needing to snack through the day avoiding late-night feedings (go to sleep, instead!) . . . It may be unrealistic for you to follow these suggestions 100% of the time, and that is okay - most people know I am all about living a life full of joy and balance . The habits and behaviours you stick to the MAJORITY of the time are what truly matter - and you are in full control of that. . So please add "eating-well" to that list of self-care items you have there, and start caring about how you feed your body

THE PREGNANCY TEST . I love to share in the celebration of a positive pregnancy test with my patients, but for every positive there are many, many more emails, texts, DMs with the sad news of a negative test. These results are heartbreaking for the women who want nothing more than to be a mom. . For those of you struggling, always remember that just because you aren't pregnant (yet!), you are no less of a woman. There is so much about you that makes you worthy, even if it i...s taking more time to conceive than you thought it ever would. You are not broken. And you most definitely are not alone . I am always here to listen to your story and help you get through. Never hesitate to reach out, we all need each other See more

WHY MOST SMOOTHIES ARE UNHEALTHY . Just because something has been made in a blender and labeled: "smoothie" doesn't make it inherently healthy. Although smoothies may be a great tool for some people to get in a good boost of nutrition, especially on the go, Ive got a bit of beef with them. My top 2 concerns are: . 1 Smoothies can be super high in sugar... . I have patients list off their smoothie ingredients and it goes something like this: "banana, mango, strawberries, dash of maple syrup, vanilla yogurt, dates..." & ok, maybe they are throwing in a small handful of greens... . Smoothies packed with high glycemic fruits, dates and other sweetened foods (check your yogurt & alternative milks!) are sure to raise your blood sugar and cause a spike in insulin - not good for your hormones or your waistline! My recommendations usually include sticking to berries only - they are full of antioxidants, nutrients, and don't affect our blood sugar to as high a degree. If you must use banana to sweeten it up, try using only until you can go without. Also, steer clear from using any type of juice in your smoothies & avoid anything with added sugar. . 2 Smoothies can seriously lack protein . I believe it is important to start your day with a good punch of protein. Protein is needed to stabilize insulin levels and increase satiety (the feeling of fullness). This can be done by adding nut butters, hemp seeds, chia seeds, unsweetened Greek yogurt (if you tolerate dairy), or the easiest option may be adding a protein powder. My sneaky trick is to accompany a smoothie with 2 hard-boiled eggs on the side . . . There are also a number of individuals who may not tolerate smoothies well. If you experience bloating, have pain or other digestive issues, smoothies may not be for you! If this is you, lets talk! . Moral of the story: smoothies can be useful, but arent for everyone. If you tolerate smoothies, be sure to limit the sugar, up the protein, and throw in some fat too See more

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT . But, what does this actually mean? . I can tell you that it doesn't mean that you are good, bad, clean, dirty, vegan, paleo, keto, or whatever other labels you've put on your food, or your self.... . To me, the most important thing about WHAT YOU EAT is the OUTCOME from that food. What is your food doing for you? How is it fueling your body? . Is your food supporting healthy hormones? Or is it wreaking havoc on them? . Are the nutrients you are eating helping to enhance your egg quality, or are they making it more challenging for you to conceive? . Are the macronutrients in your diet giving you energy? Or are they causing you to crash every afternoon? . Food is not there to merely taste good and fill your tummy. The food that you eat is broken down into the fuel source for every single cell in your body. . The greatest thing about food is that you have FULL CONTROL over what you choose to eat. Your food choices should be based on HOW YOU WANT TO FEEL or WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE. . So how are you fueling your body? Ask yourself if you are supporting your goals through your food choices. Because at the end of the day, food is the MOST powerful medicine See more

QUARANTINE PR's . I was so proud of this one that I had to share! I hadn't done a 1-rep max deadlift since 2017 @breakerstrength (the best CrossFit gym to ever exist). And since quarantine, I really haven't done much strength training at all. . So I decided to check-in...to see how much strength I had actually lost ... . Well, to my surprise, I crushed my last PR (personal record) by 10 lbs! This was my 210lb 1-rep max deadlift. And its pretty clear by my expression that I was truly surprised by this... . The body is incredible and so resilient. It amazes me every day. #Crossfit and strength training altogether changed the way I thought (and now think) about fitness. Instead of working out because I had to, to burn calories or to look a certain way, my focus shifted to what my body could achieve in the gym. To see progress and huge changes in your ability is one of the most motivating things - whether thats in strength, skill level, or endurance. Although looking fit and healthy is a nice side-benefit, the motivation is so much bigger than the way you look. And I believe thats how it should be . Now I anxiously await for the re-opening of @oneacademy to see how coronavirus has truly impacted my overall fitness See more

THE BRAIN & HORMONES . The brain is like the control center of our body, especially when it comes to our hormones, our periods, and our fertility. . When we are on the birth control pill, our brain stops talking to our ovaries. The pill does the work for it. The thing is, when you come off of the pill, your brain now needs to re-establish this communication to promote optimal hormone production and regular menstrual cycles.... . Although most women regain their cycles within 3 months after stopping the pill, a lot of women can have no period or irregular cycles for months after. . This could be for multiple reasons, but one thing to focus on is this communication between the brain and the ovaries. And this is true whether you are coming off the pill, or you have irregular cycles to begin with. . To re-establish hormonal balance & optimal signalling from the brain, there are multiple aspects of your health to address. This is why with all of my patients we discuss: stress reduction optimizing sleep eating the right foods eating the right AMOUNT of food exercising well, but not too much optimal supplementation, and using botanicals to regulate this communication . Our entire endocrine system, including the brain & ovaries, is very sensitive to changes within the body. That’s why a holistic, root-cause focussed approach is always best. . Dr. Bronwyn Storoschuk, ND 21.05.2020

If the answer is no, don't do it . Let's be honest - living a healthy lifestyle can be HARD. I definitely have days where I struggle, too. But knowing your purpose and understanding your goals can keep you on track when motivation may be low. . I want you to envision the life you want to be living. Think about how you want to FEEL each day. Think about which health goals would make you so fired up to finally reach... . Remember these things, especially when life gets busy or stressful. And remember that your health is the most important thing you have, and luckily, (for the most part) you've got full control of it See more

It is how we brace the uncertainty in our lives that leads to the great transformation of our souls - Brandon A. Trean . The best way to build resilience to uncertainty is by practicing mindfulness . @jsookman and I committed to a 21-day meditation challenge - today is day 13. Each morning we listen to the meditation and then a journaling exercise follows. It has been a great addition to our quarantine schedule. I have jumped on and off this train too many times to count, ...and I know a lot of people struggle with committing to a mindfulness practice when life gets busy. But as our schedules may be more flexible at the moment, there is no better time to build (or re-build) this habit than now. . This can mean daily meditation, journaling, breathing exercises - whatever works for you. And remember, it takes 21 days to build a habit, so be gentle with yourself & give it time. Hopefully, it is something that will stick, well beyond COVID . It is more apparent than ever that life comes with much uncertainty. But this is yet another learning opportunity to grow and to build resilience to uncertainty. Because although this will pass, uncertainty will come knocking again, and again. . Do you have a daily mindfulness practice? What has worked for you to stick to your practice in the past? Share below; it's helpful for all of us to know what works for others! See more

"The busyness of your life leaves little room for the source of your life" - Ann Voskamp . Living in a busy city can be overwhelming at times. For the past year, I have had a love-hate relationship with Toronto. It is an amazing city with a lot to offer, but it is easy to get caught up in the busyness of it all and leave little room for the things that bring you true joy. . Working downtown with mainly young professionals, I see what this busyness can do to one's physical and... mental health. The pace that many are moving at can lead to anxiety and depression, sleep disorders, hormonal imbalances, amongst many other things. The stress that this brings is not sustainable and it leaves little time for self-care and enjoyment of life. . If you are feeling overwhelmed, overscheduled, or overworked it is time to re-evaluate your game plan. Give yourself permission to take a step back, take a break, rest a while. And if you have a hard time giving yourself permission, I am giving you the permission now. Start with this: say "no" to the things that don't serve you, and "yes" to those that bring you happiness . . . . . #mentalhealth #findjoy #rest #toronto #torontonaturopath #naturopathicmedicine #bellletstalk See more

Post-Birth Control Syndrome (PBCS) is a collection of symptoms that many women experience about 4-6 months after stopping the pill . When you are on the pill it works by shutting down the communication between your brain and your ovaries, and it can take sometime for your body to find its rhythms again post-pill . Some of the common symptoms of PBCS include:... - Amenorrhea, or the loss of your period - Heavy, painful periods - Infertility - Hypothyroidism - Acne - Migraines - Hair loss - Depression or anxiety - Gas or bloating.and the list goes on . The most common ones I see are post-pill amenorrhea and acne! . If you are having symptoms post-pill, your best bet is to find a healthcare provider who can put together an individualized plan that is specific to your needs. There are ways to reduce the likelihood of developing symptoms of PBCS and to treat symptoms once they arise...all while optimizing your hormonal health! . . . . . #individualizedmedicine #torontonaturopath #womenswellness #womenshealth #thepill #PBCS #hormones #fertility See more

By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail" - Benjamin Franklin . I truly believe that a successful week begins on a Sunday . Whether you have fitness goals, healthy eating plans or deadlines at work, knowing how you will attack the week ahead will help you crush all of the above... . To set myself up for a successful week, there are a few things that I like to do on Sunday afternoons: . 1. Meal Prep: I like to get a few key items ready for my week. It can be as simple as hard-boiling a dozen eggs, putting a handful of nuts into 5 containers, or cutting up veggies. Or it can be prepping each lunch and dinner for the week - but to be honest, this hasnt happened much lately! Any meal prep that gets done helps me stay on track! . 2. Schedule my workouts: My weeks are ever-changing and so I need to schedule in my time at the gym. I physically write in my calendar when I will be working out & then I sign-up for all the classes I plan to do that week to lock myself in! . 3. Make a list of "must-dos": Like most entrepreneurs, I'm guilty of having a never-ending to-do list. Every Sunday I look over this list and pick out the "important" and "urgent" tasks that I must prioritize for the week. This helps my mental health and keeps me focussed on what needs to get done this week . 4. Organize my supplements: I like to set out all my supplements for the week to make it quick and easy to pop them, on the go! . Somethings are meant to be spontaneous, but balancing a healthy lifestyle with a busy work-life can be challenging. That is why I love my Sunday planning! . . . . . #sunday #plantosucceed #healthyliving #goals #fitness #healthyeating #naturopathicmedicine #torontoND #naturopath See more

The heath of your gut is SUPER important when it comes to balancing your hormones! . Estrogen is made mainly by your ovaries. It then moves through the blood to your uterus, breasts, and other organs, until it reaches your liver where its inactivated. The liver dumps this inactive estrogen into your intestines to be eliminated - this is how it is supposed to work! . But, when certain bacteria in the gut are found, something very different happens. "Bad" bacteria make an en...zyme called beta-glucuronidase, which re-activates the estrogen in your gut. This is a problem because now this estrogen can re-enter the body and cause excess estrogen - this is impaired metabolism of estrogen . Signs of excess estrogen: PMS, painful periods, fibroids, infertility, breast lumps, heavy periods, etc. . If you suffer from some of these things listed, it may be time to address the health of your gut! . An easy thing you can start doing is to diversify the vegetables you are eating - the fiber in veggies will feed the good bacteria to help balance out the flora. Some women may also benefit from taking a high-quality probiotic to replace the beneficial bacteria. If you think you may have hormonal concerns and you also have digestive issues, it may be time to speak to an ND! . . . . . #guthealth #eattherainbow #estrogen #hormonebalance #naturopathicmedicine #naturopath #torontoND See more

NDs can also order lab testing when ...required, to understand your deeper physiology and assess your current health status.
