Happy #EdRobertsDay! Ed Roberts is often referred to as the father of the Independent Living Movement. From being the first student with significant disabilit...ies to attend UC Berkeley, to founding its Physically Disabled Students Program and creating the model for Center for Independent Living across the US, and so much more, Roberts was a pioneering activist and paved a very important path for people with disabilities. #DisabilityHistory Video by CIL with archival footage courtesy of CBS News (60 Minutes) and documentary, Free Wheeling.

During the 2019 National Conference, Independent Living Canada took the time to recognize champions of IL through the Paula Saunders award. The Centre’s own Suzanne Larocque was honored with this award in recognition of the demonstrated long term and extraordinary personal commitment to the full inclusion of persons with disabilities in Canada. Suzanne was not able to attend the awards gala however upon her return to Ontario, was able to accept the award today at the Centre.... Suzanne, this award embodies what a true champion of Independent Living is. We are so grateful for your 9 years of dedicated service to IL Canada and its Centres, such as ours. You not only dedicated your time and skills, but also committed to moving the organization and its mission forward in new and exciting ways. Your insight, intelligence, and passion for helping others was a true gift to IL. Félicitations, Suzanne!

Today we celebrated another staff milestone! Lucette Cousineau, our fabulous Independent Living Skills Coordinator, is celebrating her 10 year anniversary with the Centre. There isn’t a member or volunteer at the Centre that isn’t familiar with Lucette, her uplifting personality and infectious laugh! ... We are so lucky to have a team member who is as dedicated and passionate as Lucette. We want to thank you, Lucette for always going above and beyond and caring so much about your work, our members and the Centre. Félicitations Lucette!

It's National AccessAbility Week! This week is an opportunity to celebrate the valuable contributions of Canadians with disabilities and to recognize the efforts of individuals, communities and workplaces that are actively working to remove barriers to accessibility and inclusion. We all benefit from a society and an economy without barriers to inclusion. When people with disabilities can participate in all aspects of society, including accessing employment, resources and ser...vices, we are building a better, stronger Canada for everyone.
