Adult tooth eruption We have 20 baby (primary) teeth, which start to erupt at about 6 months of age. They fall out (shed) at various times throughout childhood. By age 21, most of the 32 of the permanent teeth have usually erupted but the 4 wisdom teeth may not have. . The general pattern is that bottom teeth erupt prior to the top teeth. ... The first adult teeth to erupt are the mandibular (bottom) first molar and maxillary (top) first molar at around age 6-7 years. There is no primary tooth in the spot where the first molars erupt. The next ones in line are the mandibular (lower) anterior teeth followed by the maxillary (upper) anterior and mandibular lateral incisors. Shortly after, the top lateral incisors erupt. . Sometimes the permanent teeth erupt prior to the baby teeth being lost. Often times this can concern the parents and I often get asked if I can pull the baby tooth. Baby teeth are meant to be lost on their own and they usually do;however, in the rare occasion they don’t we can help them out. . If your child’s primary teeth have a tough time being lost naturally or if you are concerned give your dentist a call and they’ll be able to guide you. . *dental chart adapted from ADA #vancouverdentist #fraserheightsdentist #surreydentist #femaledentist #canadiandentist #teethingtips #ubcdentistry #ubcdentist #babyteeth #dentaltips #dentistmom #dentalofficesurrey #gentledentistry #gentledentist #langleydentist #kidsdentistry #teetheruption #dentalblogger #canadianblogger #teetheruptionpattern #dentalhealth #dentistrymyworld #familydentist #fraserheights #langley #vancity See more

Dental Anxiety Do you suffer from it? What if I told you that a large percentage of the population suffer from it. What if I told you that even grown men suffer from it. Yes dental anxiety is quite common. Some tips to help alleviate dental anxiety are:... Get to know your dentist and dental office really well. . Let the dentist and the team know that you have anxiety. . Tell them what usually helps or what makes it worse. . Let them know about previous experiences. . Communicate with them about your fears and concerns. . Book your appointments early in the morning. . Get a good nights rest the night before your appointment. . Eat a light breakfast and minimize caffeine the morning of your appointment. . Give yourself ample time to get to your appointment. . Make sure you book regular yearly dental cleaning and check up appointments. Chances are if there are any issues with your teeth they’ll be caught sooner and will require less involved work. For severe anxiety ask your dentist about oral sedation as that is something that trained dentists can offer to their patients. . #vancouverdentist #fraserheightsdentist #surreydentist #femaledentist #canadiandentist #dentalstudent #ubcdentistry #ubcdentist #ubcalumni #dentalanxiety #mentalhealth #dentaltips #nervouspatient #dentalofficesurrey #gentledentistry #gentledentist #langleydentist #femaleentrepreneur #dentalblogger #vancouverblogger #canadianblogger See more

Pre-book your dental appointments: . December has always been one of the busiest months of the year in dentistry. We usually see an influx of new or existing patients that are trying to utilize or maximize their use of their dental plans to get their treatments done before the new year as most plans reset at the beginning of the calendar year. Truth be told I’ve always wondered why people would leave things to the very last and ...it wasn’t until this year that I understood it myself. It’s because we do not prioritize ourselves enough. . Speaking from personal experience as a dentist I have my fair share of back, neck and shoulder pain. Life just got so busy for me that I left my own self care to the very end of the year before booking myself in for a massage treatment. I found myself desperately phoning around multiple places and finally found an appointment by being on the waiting list at spa utopia. . This is all due to a lack of planning and pre-scheduling. If we all prioritize ourselves enough we will take the necessary steps to plan for our own well being, whether it be a dental appointment, a massage, or any other thing that is in your own benefit. . One of the things we try to do for every patient is pre-book their 6 month hygiene and exam appointment. Yes it’s hard to know your schedule in 6 months but at least it’s in your calendar and if the day and time doesn’t work you can change and reschedule it but you WON’T miss it. So do yourself a favour and book your appointments well in advance. Your future self will thank you for it See more

Eruption of primary or baby teeth: Some info for all the young mamas and papas: Tooth eruption starts usually around 6 months (but in some kids as early as 4.5 or even 5 months), it can last until the age of 3 years. During this time your child can have sore gums and be slightly more irritable.... Generally the front teeth (both upper and lower) erupt first followed by the rest of the teeth moving sequentially towards the back. The exception to this is the first molars, which usually erupt before the canines. . The first teeth to erupt are the lower and upper central incisors, which erupt between the ages of 6 to 12 months. The next to erupt are the lateral incisors between 9-16 months, followed by the first molars from 13-19 months. Next, the canines erupt from 16-23 months. Lastly, between 23 and 33 months, the second molars erupt. What’s very important to remember is that these eruption patterns are a general pattern. Your child may be a bit ahead or behind these timelines. I have even seen a one year old once who still didn’t have any teeth erupted. Even though that’s not the normal situation the child had all his teeth and was just a bit delayed in their development. If you are concerned about your child’s teeth, contact your dentist for a quick consult and check. . #teetheruption #primaryteeth #teething #momsofinstagram #vancitydentist #vancouverdentist #momdentist #dadsofinstagram #dentalcare #babyteeth #babycare #babyfacts #brightsmile #babysmiles #teethingtips #mommyhacks #daddyhacks #dentalfacts #familydentist #dentistsofinstagram #tipsfornewmommies #tipsfornewdaddies #dentaltips #vancouverblogger #mommybloggers

Halloween is going to look a bit different this year. I am not taking my daughter trick or treating like every other year instead we have organized a small controlled trick or treat experience with a limited number of friends. Yes Dentists like candy too and yes I do selectively give my daughter treats. Here are some tips on how to control the candy situation: Try to have a good meal before heading out to collect candy. Be lenient on the candy consumption on the Hallo...ween day. When you come home sort the candy and offer $$ for every candy that they are willing to part ways with. If possible try to get rid of the sticky kinds that get stuck on the tooth. Chocolate would be a better option than sticky candy. Try not to keep the candy in the bedroom, ideally put it in a place where it’s a bit tricky to get too. For the days following Halloween try to pair their treats following a meal. In that way the sugar levels don’t spike throughout the day and the body/mouth can easily manage the ph levels. Last but not least make sure you help them brush and floss their teeth at nighttime before they go to bed. And most importantly try to Have lots of Fun! Halloween is only once a year but the memories will last a lifetime .

If you’ve had braces or have a lingual wire placed for retention you are probably also aware of how important it is to keep the teeth clean and that it sometimes can be a challenge. There are many different types of lingual wires but regardless of the type they all pose challenges for flossing. I thought I’d share some of the simple things you can grab next time you’re out to help you. EEZ-THRU Floss threaders by GUM- I find these ones the thinnest on the market and easier ...to get in between the teeth with little struggle. SUPER FLOSS by ORAL-B- work as well as the floss threaders and works as a threaded and floss all in one. WATERPIK water flosser- helps to get the big pieces of food out from between the teeth. Electric Toothbrush any brand (@philipssonicare is my personal favourite). Pick these up at pretty much any drugstore and give them a try. Let me know if you have any questions about any of these.

A lot of us are getting ready to get the kids back to school this week and figuring out the best way to coordinate things. Being a working mom the start of the school year has always been a wonderful time but also a time where I feel a bit more stressed because now I gotta plan drop off & pick up, prep lunches & snack, make sure homework is done, try to get home at a reasonable time after work etc. On top of it it all we have a pandemic to navigate through. But through it all... I just wanted to remind all you beautiful moms and hardworking dads that You got this . . The days sometimes may seem long but the years are very short. * MOUTHWASH - Tissue Issue * In the last little while I’ve seen a lot of patients where the tissues in the mouth are sloughing off. Most patients have had some burning and pain in the area but some haven’t had any pain. There’s a lot of reasons that can cause tissue sloughing but almost 80-90 % In my experience it’s been due to recent over use of mouthwash. Most of my patients and staff are aware that I do not like mouthwashes, don’t use them myself and don’t really... recommend to patients. Here is a few reasons why: Most mouthwashes are acidic and can cause more problems than fixing any. I have seen so many burns on gum tissues etc that could have simply been avoided. Most of them contain alcohol and I know there are alcohol free ones but still no good for me. A lot of them have parabens in them which are carcinogenic. It can mask underlying conditions if you’re using it for bad breath. You can have perio disease, your tongue may need some tlc and toothbrush scrubbing. You can also have underlying gut issues that cause the bad breath. Know the reason why you’re using the mouthwash if that is something you have to do. Simply saying my wife makes me do it does not suffice as a justified reason. (Although Happy wife could mean Happy Life lol). If you still don’t want to give up Mouthwash Look for one without: any parabens no alcohol. low in acidity . #dentistofinsta #dentistofinstagram #dentaloffice #dentist #dentaltalk #inspiration #mouthwash #elementaloralcare #oralhealth #vancouverdentist #surreydentist #whiteteeth #teethhealth #dentalstudentsofinsta #dentalstudentlife #dentalstudentblogger #dentalpracticeowner #badbreath #femaledentist #naturopath #dentalhygienist #doctorsofinsta #nursesofinsta See more

Composite or Porcelain Veneers? Over the last few weeks I’ve had lots of questions about these. There’s quite a bit of difference between the two so I’ll break it down in simple points and keep it short. Pros of Composite Veneers:... 1. Use of composite (synthetic resins) 2. Usually require no local anesthetic 3. Usually done in a single visit 4. Usually doesn’t require trimming of teeth 5. Immediate result 6. Reversible if for some reason patient changes their mind. 7. Price is more affordable $$$ and usually covered by insurance. Cons of Composite Veneers . 1. They can chip 2. They can stain 3. Might need to be replaced overtime Pros Of Porcelain Veeners 1. Made of porcelain & stronger than composite 2. Less chance of staining 3. Highly esthetic result 4. Can achieve the Hollywood look with them. Cons of Porcelain Veneers 1. Usually done in two appointments 2. Requires local anaesthetic 3. Most types require some preparation of the teeth.m (but can be prep less). 4. Possibility of chipping overtime but very low chance. 5. More costly than composite veeners and insurance usually doesn’t cover . #compositeveneers #composite #porcelainveneers #hollywoodsmile #dentalfacts #dentalstudent #dentalstudentlife #dentistrymyworld #dentalmaterials #dentallab #dentaltech #dentist #femaledentist #brightsmile #beautifulsmile #careforyourteetb #philipsonicate #sonicare #teethwhitening #teethwhiteningstrips

Anti- or Pro ? What if I told you that both have their benefits at the right time. I’m talking about antibiotics and probiotics. What is an antibiotic? It’s a type of antimicrobial substance active against bacteria. It is the most important type of antibacterial agent for fighting bacterial infections & they are widely used in the treatment & prevention of such infections. They work by either killing or inhibiting the growth of bacteria. ... What is a probiotic? Probiotics are live bacteria & yeasts that are good for you, especially your digestive system. Your body is full of bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics are often called "good" or "helpful" bacteria because they help keep your gut healthy. You can buy them over the counter at health food stores and even on the shelves on some pharmacies. Some need to be kept in the fridge to keep the bacteria alive and some don’t. You also have to find one that works for you as everyone is different. I don’t think there’s been a time such as this time (COVID-19 ) that there’s been so many antibiotics prescribed because physicians and dentists weren’t able to see the patients for some time. I’m personally not for antibiotics and prefer to not prescribe them; however, there are cases that antibiotics are absolutely needed and sometimes really strong ones to clear the infections. I’ve even had to send a few patients to the hospital for IV antibiotics because of massive facial swellings before we can even start any work on the teeth. Having said that they should be prescribed with caution and reason being is simply because your body can become resistant to them and when a time comes that you really need them they may not work. . You should also know that antibiotics take about 24-48 hrs to kick in and have their full effect. Always complete the full cycle of your prescription even if the tooth/pain is getting better after a few days. When antibiotics are taken you should always supplement with a good probiotic either after the round of antibiotics is done because antibiotics is getting rid of the good and the bad bacteria.

6 ft apart and we did it! The comeback is better than the setback! . And just like that the month of June is over. . If you had told me years ago that even our nervous patients would be happy to see the dentist I would not have believed you. I can’t count the number of times we have heard you guys say I’m so happy you’re open and so happy to be here this month. It almost and I said almost (lol) makes up for all the years of hearing it’s not you doc, but I just don’t l...ike coming to the dentist. Even our nervous patients have said I can’t believe I’m happy to be at the dentist. . Thank you for making our first month back a great comeback! Thank you to my girls who have worked hard in making our #newnormal seamless and thank you to all my patients for being very patient even if you have to wait a few months before you are able to get in to see us. Do you know what * C A L C U L U S * is? Calculus or tartar is a form of hardened dental plaque. It’s caused by precipitation of minerals from saliva & gingival crevicular fluid in plaque on the teeth. The precipitation process kills the bacteria that is present in dental plaque and creates a rough and hard surface that allows more dental plaque formation. This is called calculus buildup which causes gingival inflammation and eventually boneloss around the teeth. T...his calculus can form around the gumline of the teeth which we call supra gingival calculus and is usually white/creamy in colour. Calculus can also form underneath the gums between the teeth, which we call sub gingival calculus and is often times a dark grey/black colour. Calculus is comprised of 70-80% mineralized inorganic materials such as calcium phosphate, dicalcium phosphate hydrate, Octacalcium phosphate, Whitlockite, and hydroxyapatite. The organic composition consists of proteins, carbohydrates and a minor lipid portion. Calculus formation is often related to bad breath, receding gums and inflamed gingiva. Brushing and flossing can remove dental plaque which leads to calculus formation; however once calculus is formed its too hard to remove with brushing and needs to be removed with ultrasonic scalers or dental hand instruments. That’s why it’s so important to book your dental cleanings regularly and with the help of the hygienist maintain a healthy oral cavity. . #elitedentists #studentsofdentistry #doctorsofinstagram #dentistry #ppecanada #girlbosswithfloss #dentistsofinsta #dentist #igdentist #dentallab #dentaltech #dentalphotography #ubcdentistry #ubc #dentalgeeks #dentistsofinsta #dentistsofinsta #dentistmom #momlife #dentalblogger #babesinscrubs #dentalstudents #whitecoat #womenindentistry #ppe #faceshield #shield #dentistryworld #womenindentistry #dentalppe #dentalblogger #vancouverblogger #dentalcalculus #healthyteeth

Are you team coffee or tea ? . One of the things I look forward to every morning is my morning coffee with some cream, so clearly I’m team coffee . Tea and coffee are not necessarily bad for the teeth. However, both of them do cause extrinsic staining of the teeth. Even though coffee is darker, tea actually creates more staining because it contains more tannins (which are staining molecules). These are external stains and can easily be polished off. ... . You can also eliminate the risk of stains by drinking through a straw (I know that can make it less satisfying). . The concerns with tea and coffee are the amount of sugar that we put in them. While cream and milk may lessen the staining effect of these beverages they do add and count as added sugar as well. . The North American culture & pace of life also has gotten us used to numerous amount of these beverages throughout the day and walking and sipping on them. Sipping on a drink that has added sugar to it leaves your teeth at a constant state of weakness and battle to try to defend itself. Hence you’re increasing your chances of getting cavities. . My suggestion is pair the tea or coffee close to one of your meals. This way you’re giving your body a chance to protect itself and give it a break. . Substitute sugar for other alternatives like monk fruit sweetener, stevia or better yet completely eliminate the sugar. . I have my coffee with cream and I find that’s plenty of sweetness for me. Make small changes like reducing the amount of sugar or cream to eliminate the sugar load on your teeth and body. Trust me your teeth & body will thank you later. See more
