Can you see the difference? Which side has trouble staying stacked in 3 dimensions? You can clearly see that I have trouble doing so on my left foot. ... Funny thing is that this actually feels balanced to me. We are often so unaware of our compensations. We take them with everything we do. Compensations start as advantageous to offload injured areas. However they often remain long after the injury heals. These compensations are clearly not optimal. Being more centered will allow for more efficient movement and less risk of injuries. In my case my left side isn’t great at staying stacked up. It comes as no surprise that almost all my overuse running injuries have happened on my right side! Sounds obvious right?! Yet so many of us fail to see the connections is all aspects of life really. As for the human body, we often isolate treatment to one area of the body. We think that because our back hurts we must simply treat the back! ... Unfortunately/fortunately this is rarely the case. Restrictions, past injuries, compensations above and below the painful site are often involved. Blaming and only treating the site of pain is often ineffective or short lived at best. Investigating whole body movement is a MUST! Investigating how your foot moves to treat neck pain may at first seem a little far fetched but when you think about it makes total sense! Do you stretch? Why do you stretch? Because someone told you to? Because it feels good?... In a perfect world we wouldn’t need to ‘stretch’ since movement would be naturally part of our everyday lives. The human body has evolved for millions of years with movement. It has only been recently where humans have had the luxury to outsource movement. We no longer need to move to fulfill our needs and survive. We’ve needed to consciously make time to move, stretch, strength train etc. to stay healthy. Whether you ‘stretch’ or not, we need movement in our lives. If its not naturally part of your environment, make it a habit and prioritize movement in your day. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. YOU will be YOUR best therapist. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise. It’s time to take ownership of our health. You’re the captain of your ship. We must not be dependent on others to ‘fix’ us and we must challenge practitioners who preach that you need ‘fixing’. ... The human body is NOT this fragile! We have amazingly strong, robust and adaptable bodies. We are much stronger than we are led to believe! My role as a therapist is to simply provide NUDGES and provide much needed DIRECTION. It is NOT to fix you. It is unfair to expect this from any therapist. It is also irresponsible to claim you will do this as a therapist. I am sorry I cannot fix you, nobody can. But I can provides valuable nudges to get the ball rolling. I can provide you with direction to maneuver through often over-complicated world of rehabilitation sciences. And most importantly I will try to EMPOWER you to become YOUR best therapist!
