How do the physiological responses of exercise help us manage anxiety? When we engage in #exercise, we trigger symptoms similar to what we might experience in a heightened state of #anxiety or #panic: increased heart and respiration rate, sweating, tight chest, nausea, dry mouth and/or dizziness. By exposing our #brain and #body to an #elevatedheartrate through physical exertion, we teach an anxiety-prone brain that our heart rate can be elevated for reasons other than anxi...ety and help desensitize our #amygdala (fear centre) from symptoms of panic. In other words, by evoking the same physiological responses we feel from anxiety, through exercise, we retrain the brain to associate those sensations with #safety, rather than danger. Regular aerobic exercise tames our brain's 'fight-flight-freeze' response as we develop a tolerance for the physical sensations of anxiety, priming our capacity to . While exercise is often the first step in #lifestyle modifications for the prevention and management of #chronicdisease, it isn't necessarily a straight forward step for all - we get that. What makes change so hard? Inherent to change is vulnerability and ushering in an element of unpredictability with the unknown. Side stepping the familiar and stripping away our defenses - our blankets of security - is big stuff. So big that many of us either avoid it due to a fear of #failure, being judged or wounded, or we attempt change using #fear, #guilt, or #regret, as the driving force. Neither approaches will contribute to successful long-lasting #lifestyle changes. ... Research - as well as our years of supporting people in adopting healthy lifestyle patterns - indicates that #longlastingchange is more likely to occur when it's #selfmotivated, rooted in #positivethinking, and grounded in #realisticexpectations. Change is a process, not an event. And often not as quick a process as many would hope for. An effective coach will see you through the ups and downs, solicit your positive intentions and help you adapt strategies as you move through different stages of #growth. Any #effort you make in a positive direction, despite the setbacks and whispers (or screams) of #self-doubt, is worthwhile. We see you and we not only acknowledge that it's hard, we empathize. INGREDIENTS: 1 1/2 lb. rainbow carrots, halved crosswise and thick ends quartered 1 1/2 tbsp. olive oil, divided 1 1/2 tsp. whole coriander seeds, crushed Kosher salt and pepper 1 tbsp. pure maple syrup 1 tsp. grated lime zest, plus 1 Tbsp lime juice DIRECTIONS: * Place large rimmed baking sheet in oven; heat oven to 425F. * Toss carrots on the hot sheet with 1 tablespoon oil, then add coriander and teaspoon each salt and pepper * Roast, tossing after 15 minutes, until golden brown and tender, 20 to 25 minutes total. Immediately toss with maple syrup, lime zest, juice and remaining tablespoon oil. * Let cool and enjoy! Is your immune system getting the sleep it deserves? As we are well into flu season it’s important to stay informed on sleep and how it affects the immune system. Studies show that those of us who get 7+ hours of sleep a night produce better functioning T-cells. These cells are important in targeting and fighting off harmful pathogens . Our bodies rely on these T-Cells to keep us healthy and strong.... Lack of sleep can also lead to exaggerated symptoms of illness, as well as loss of focus and memory, changes in mood, and our ability to be productive in everyday life. Getting adequate sleep is the first step in maintaining a strong immune system.
