Our traffic safety focus for the month of October is Pedestrian Safety. Most pedestrian collisions happen during rush hour periods, when both drivers and pedestrians are rushing to get home. Reduce your speed when approaching busy intersections as pedestrians may be distracted and not signal their intent to cross. Seasonal changes in daylight during October and November and weather conditions can also make seeing pedestrians problematic.... Pedestrian safety facts: Between 2012 and 2016, on average, 45 pedestrians were killed and 1,181 were injured each year. The majority of pedestrian casualty collisions (95.4 per cent) occurred in urban areas in 2016. Half of the drivers (49.8 per cent) involved in pedestrian casualty collisions failed to yield the right of way to the pedestrian (2016). In 2016, the casualty rates per 10,000 populations were highest for pedestrians between the ages of 15 to 19. However, 84 per cent of pedestrians killed were 20 and older. In 2016, 34.2 per cent of pedestrians involved in fatal collisions had consumed alcohol. The likeliest time for these collisions was between 3 - 7 p.m., and more casualty collisions occurred on Friday than any other day (2016). See more

Our traffic safety focus for the month of September is Back to School. As the first day of school approaches take extra time to get to and from work as students go back to school. Be alert and cautious in and around school zones and playgrounds as most children have not developed the skills to be safe in traffic. Back to school facts:... Nearly fifty per cent of drivers involved in collisions with school buses committed a driver error, the most common of which was following too closely (2015/16 school year). More than 5,000 school buses in Alberta safely transport almost 300,000 children to and from school every weekday. During the 2015/16 school year, over 77 per cent of casualty collisions and 95 per cent of property damage collisions involving a school bus occurred in urban areas. An average of 230 children under the age of 15 are injured as pedestrians or cyclists each year between 2012 and 2016. This month we are focusing our education efforts on back to school through radio and pre-paid social media ads and tweets. See more
