Nobody is taught how to care for the emotional needs of a child. We often operate out of the unconscious manual in our brain that our parents handed down to us ...and their parents handed down to them. But now we have the power to change the instructions in the manual!! Childhood emotional neglect has similar outcomes to child abuse. The difference is that neglect is usually unintentional. Most parents are trying to do the best they can with the skill set they have. I know I am guilty of not always saying or doing the best thing for my child. Most of the reason I write the posts I do is because it helps me integrate the information into my own parenting tool box. Many times these are the lessons I need to learn. So if you find some of yourself in the slides I posted, it’s normative. You are not alone. But, we can and need to learn healthier parenting skills for our children and the future children they will have. Knowledge empowers us and can change the world, one child at a time. . . . . . . . . #parenting #childhoodemotionalneglect #childhood #parentingskills #Childabuseprevention #grandparentsraisinggrandkids #kinshipcare #fostercare #fosterparenting #positiveparenting #emotionalneglect #childhoodpsychology #parentcoaching #parentingcoach #emotionalintelligence #emotionalawareness #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthcoach #mentalhealth #emotionalhealth #parentingishard #childwelfare #parentingtips #emotionalabuse #familytherapy

It is so important to allow kids to get their frustration out through play!

Love this! Our kids need OUR help in their hardest moments. Kids learn to self-regulate by having an adult regulate them!

"If we are going to hang onto our teens we will need to find a new relational rhythm that honours the changes underway for them. If we are to hold onto our relationship we will need to find a way to ensure their big emotions, such as resistance, sadness and alarm don’t pose a threat to our connection." I have been talking about this in almost all my sessions lately; we need to hold onto our kids by listening, creating space for their emotions, as well as their independence and emerging personalities. http://macnamara.ca//making-sense-of-adolescents-or-anyon/

Perfect example of how to validate feelings!

Dr. Jennie Psychology Group 29.07.2020

Great reminder...especially with many of our kids returning/starting school this week! Expect big emotions and big behaviours. How we respond to those behaviours will determine how our children’s relationship with their emotions in the future! Label their emotion, validate it, create space for it and address the behaviour when they are calm!

Dr. Jennie Psychology Group 09.07.2020

I encourage all parents who use time out to read this! Time outs don’t work in the long run and they communicate that you don’t want to be around them when you misbehave! Misbehaviour is rooted in emotion. You need to address the emotion in the moment and talk about the behaviour when they are calm!

My former supervisor shared this great article! Our world seems to want to avoid feeling all the difficult emotions and just be positive. I find parents often do this with their kids; just look on the bright side which is highly invalidating! All emotions give us messages and are useful. We have to feel whatever we are feeling, in order to let go of that emotion and move forward.
