A LITTLE RANT ON THE LATEST DRAMA: Last year the Journal of Vascular Surgery published an article about a "study of the personal social media accounts of female physicians wherein it was "determined" that any posts wherein the doctors were wearing bathing suits, cute Halloween costumes, holding alcoholic beverages, or talking about politics(!!) made the doctors look unprofessional. This article recently came into the spotlight, and peop...le have been calling this bullshit out using the hashtag #medbikini. In response, @jvascsurg published an apology and a retraction, which in my opinion, is beyond embarrassing. WHY DID YOU PUBLISH IT IN THE FIRST PLACE? THIS IS CLEARLY NOT SCIENCE. YOUR APOLOGY WAS WEAKSAUCE AND MEANS NOTHING. Anyway. I digress. Some attempted succinct thoughts: 1. Women can dress up, wear bikinis, and be proud of their bodies. You can even find them attractive. None of this has ANYTHING to do with their ability to do their job. 2. This might feel incredibly obvious to you. It ISN’T obvious to many because society SEXUALIZES THE FEMALE BODY. Societies across the globe have reduced females to sex objects, & have firmly enforced the incorrect belief that if you are living a full life as a woman, then you can’t also be intelligent, capable and responsible. It’s 2020. Sexism is bullshit, the patriarchy is harmful and oppressive, the boxes society puts us in aren’t real, and living authentically is all that matters. The patriarchy and it's double standards are not new, but clearly are still alive and well. We need to stand up for ourselves and hold our ground in the face of bullshit like this. So, recap: Can a woman be sexy and a successful doctor/teacher/parent/member of society? YES. Does a woman have to be professional all the time to deserve respect in her profession? NO. Does wearing a bikini, drinking alcohol, enjoying sex, looking feminine, or having fun detract from a woman’s professionalism or capacity to do her job well? NOT EVEN A LITTLE BIT. Should we care what closed-minded, misogynists think about what we should/shouldn’t do in our free time? HELL NO. So, here’s a picture of me in a bikini, living my best life. Playing, having fun, being silly. And, being literally and figuratively supported by the awesome people in my life who respect me wholly, both as a doctor and a human. Thank you especially to @littleuy for basing me, loving me, believing in me and pointing out when I’m holding myself back, and also being a loving, compassionate, inspiring-AF doctor himself. Wanna join us? Fuck the patriarchy. #medbikini

WE NEED TO DIG DEEPER. (beautiful image by @alyseruriani) // There is so much to talk about. We've been talking about mental health and the myriad ways that personal, societal and systemic issues influence our ability to heal on this page for a while.... And yet, it absolutely wasn't enough. The past two weeks have shown me all that I wasn't doing. They demonstrated that just being aware of these influences on mental health and human life is inadequate, and that the real work is in taking strong, consistent action to effect change. In my work on this platform, as an instructor, and as a doctor, I have always endeavoured to speak and act from an intersectional feminist perspective, and with a strong commitment to justice and compassion, and there is still so much more I need to learn, to understand, and to do better. Systemic racism is rampant. Within my professional spheres - the healthcare and education systems - it's so prevalent and commonplace that it's easy for many people to unintentionally overlook it, because it doesn't even stand out as abnormal. If I, as an educator, have allowed my students to graduate without a full and in-depth understanding of how racism profoundly impacts the health of Black people, Indigenous people and people of colour's lives, and how much more difficult "health" is to achieve for BIPOC individuals than it is for white people, then I have failed. We all have a role to play in shifting the world. We all have our own sphere of influence, and mine is here with all of you, at the school where I educate future clinicians, and in my office where I support the health of my patients. I am committed to educating myself, to observing more closely, to call out, speak up and stand up against racism and inequality when I see it, and to decreasing how easily my white students and colleagues are able to overlook it. And I know that's just the beginning. This problem belongs to all of us. Let's dig deeper together. See more

I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Denai Johnson on the Hella Well Podcast, and it was rad! We chatted about the science of weight-loss, why so many people struggle to lose weight and the reason why so many weight loss programs dont work. Plus, we talked about intuitive eating and why its not possible for everyone, how hormones and the birth control pill impact weight, the ketogenic diet, intermittent fasting, how to know if either of these die...ts is right for you, and so much more. Turns out, trauma-informed care isnt just for trauma! Give it a listen, and let me know what you think! Also, if you have any ideas for future podcast topics, were taking requests! Drop em in the comments below. https://open.spotify.com/episode/1sUQlnT1CS7J2KfCCaulRv

There’s lots of ever-changing information out there, so who knows if this will remain a fact, but this feels like a better safe than sorry situation since it’s such an easy shift to make. Avoid Advil/ibuprofen, and use Tylenol/acetaminophen instead if needed. Make sure you check your cold and flu medication as well.

This is me. For those that dont know me very well, let me introduce myself: I am Dr. Jessica Eastman, ND. I am a Naturopathic Doctor with a special interest in mental health and trauma. I am an intersectional feminist. I believe permission to choose what happens to your body is a fundamental human right.... I am a loud supporter of LGBTQ+ health and rights. I am work hard to be inclusive, supportive and uplifting of BIPOC individuals, sex-workers, and other oppressed minorities. I am sex- and body-positive. I dont care about white coats, or business attire. I swear often, speak casually with my students and patients, and show up as authentically and honestly as possible, both at work and in my personal life. I operate through a trauma-informed lens, and I strongly believe all healthcare practitioners should. I believe health IS political. I do not tolerate injustice, prejudice, racism, sexism, or misogyny, whether accidental or intentional. The thing I hate the most is people in power, using their power differentials (accidentally or intentionally) to shame, oppress, or otherwise harm people. I believe identity politics are a serious threat to democracy and free speech, and the only way we can heal the world is through rational conversation, WHICH MATTERS because I believe the health of an individual is intimately and inseparably linked to health of the world around them. I believe humans can only heal in relationship, and connection to a healthy community is the key to health. Also, I stand up and speak up for what I believe in. I am always learning, and striving to do better. I show up with compassion for the ways in which we are all limited, paired with a strong belief that we all have a responsibility to be and do better. I believe my role is to empower you with the tools and strength to be able to learn, heal and grow, and I LOVE my job. Welcome. Im glad youre here. Have questions? Please ask. This is a safe space. Canada has put together a website and some really neat, valuable resources and tools to help support our mental health. Its the first initiative Ive seen like this, and it is full of self-directed courses, easy processes that guide you to strengthen your self-regulation skills, AND give you one-on-one access to therapists and counsellors if needed. Plus, direct crisis line access for those of us in acute situations. When I saw this, it honestly made me cry a little.... The times we are living through are so difficult, in so so many ways, and I have been worried that the mental health impacts of isolation were being overlooked. I have said this many times in the last two months, but I have never been more grateful and proud to be Canadian. Check it out, and let me know which parts you like! https://ca.portal.gs/

"Our findings overturn a lot of the conventional thinking about mental health disorders being solely caused by the central nervous system." Some neat science to further support what many of us have known for a long time - that the mind and the body are intimately connected. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releas/2020//200421094257.htm

Small businesses are in the high-risk category. As in, they are very likely to get sick, and more likely to die due to COVID than other businesses. And despite the support the government has offered to some individuals and corporations, there is nothing available to support those of us that have small businesses and are reliant on in-person services to keep ourselves afloat. Please, give Dr. Melanie DeCunha, NDs post a read, and inform yourself on the challenges that are facing a large percentages of businesses right now. And perhaps, if you feel so inclined, speak up on our behalf. We would be very grateful for your support. We might not make it without you.

LOW COST AND SLIDING SCALE VIRTUAL APPOINTMENTS NOW AVAILABLE The world is crazy right now. It's unprecedented, and fascinating and scary and so interesting, all at the same time. When I was younger I wanted to be an epidemiologist, so I've thought, read and learned about epidemics a lot. But never once did I read, or think about the socioeconomic impact of them, and that's a MASSIVE part of why this is so scary for everyone. ... There is so much financial uncertainty, especially if you are self-employed, are an artist, work in the service industry, or do any type of job that can't be conducted from home. And naturally, we are feeling fearful of spending any money that isn't necessary because we don't know what's going to happen next. I get it. I am right there with you on all of it. I want to support you. If there was EVER a time to take care of your physical and mental health, it's NOW. When everything around you is chaos, you have to find your anchor and stability within, and that's really hard to do if you are super triggered, anxious AF, aren't sleeping, if your gut is a mess or if you're sick. I am offering low cost, and sliding scale virtual visits to anyone who feels they are or will be financially affected in this time, no questions asked. (Unfortunately only available if you are a resident of BC, because of regulations and stuff.) For existing patients: $50 30-minute followups For new patients: sliding scale initial visits We can work on strengthening your immune system, helping you to destress or get better sleep, figuring out how to build a self-care plan when your routine is obliterated and you're in your apartment 24/7, navigating trauma triggers when the world is mega scary, or on whatever else you feel you need support with. Comment, DM or email me to ask questions or book. Let's process together, and take care of each other. I am here for you, and in it with you. You don't have to do it alone. See more

Do you struggle to handle even the little stressors? Does the addition of one extra thing added to your plate make you feel like you want to explode and/or give up?
