BACK TO BASICS: SQUAT 101 Squatting is one of the most fundamental movements performed by people on a daily basis, whether it is done at home, work, or in the gym. If someone has poor squat mechanics (i.e. you're not squatting properly) it can potentially lead to and/or cause pain and discomfort in your back, hips, knees or feet. Here are some tips on how to perform a basic squat! 1. Feet shoulder width apart with slight external rotation (i.e. turn your toes slightly outward..., find what is comfortable for you). Feet should be FIRMLY planted on the ground. 2. Keep your knees tracking over your big toe. This will help avoid knee cave. It is OK to have you knees go beyond your toes! 3. Keep your core tight and keep an erect posture. This will help stabilize your spine during your squat. If squatting with weight (or a dog!), it may help to take a deep breath and hold (aka valsalva maneuver) to further brace your core. 4. Drive up with your glutes (butt muscles) and quads (front thigh muscles). Thanks to my assistant Willow for acting as my weight! Keep moving -Dr. Josh Disclaimer: This post is meant for educational purposes only. If you are experiencing pain during a squat, come see me and we can determine your root cause of discomfort and how to get you better!

Another year, another moustache. You might not have known, but underneath the mask this chiro has been growing a muzzy in support of #movember! For those that don't know, Movember was created in 2003 by two friends in Australia to raise money for prostate and testicular cancer. Since then it has turned into a global movement with official campaigns in 21 countries raising money for over 1000 men's health programs. The goal of this movement is to raise money and awareness for ...prostate cancer, testicular cancer, men's mental health and suicide prevention. I decided to grow a mo this year to help men in my family and globally live longer, healthier lives. Keep moving and stay healthy friends! -Dr. Josh
