Osteoarthritis is a condition characterized by the breakdown and eventual loss of cartilage in one or more joints. As the cartilage deteriorates and gets thinner, the bones lose their protective covering and eventually may rub together, causing pain and inflammation of the joint. People with osteoarthritis in the foot or ankle experience, in varying degrees, one or more of the following: Pain and stiffness in the joint Swelling in or near the joint... Difficulty walking or bending the joint Diagnosing osteoarthritis, a podiatrist will examine the foot thoroughly, looking for swelling in the joint, limited mobility & pain with movement. #foot #feet #Osteoarthritis #footpain #pain #health #footdr #podiatrist #walking #ankle #arthritis Thank you Foot Health Facts for the info

Signs that an ulcer may be around the corner include: *Swelling. Look for a larger than normal area on the foot or ankle. The foot or ankle may look puffy or engorged and larger than the other. *Temperature. Look for temperature changes in the feet. When the skin feels too hot or too cold, there may be cause for alarm. Cold feet might mean a circulatory issue, whereas hot feet might mean infection.... *Color changes. Look for redness in the skin. Often before ulcers develop, there is redness and even other colors that appear before the skin forms an ulcer. *Calluses. If a callus changes colors or develops dark, dried blood colored spots in them, it may be time to have your podiatrist look at it for a proper diagnosis. #ulcer #diabetes #foot #feet #footdr #podsfixfeet #vancity #health #footulcers Thank you to Foot Health Facts for the info

Two common disorders that occur in the heel cord are Achilles tendonitis & Achilles tendonosis. Achilles tendonitis is an inflammation of the Achilles tendon. This inflammation is typically short-lived. Over time, if not resolved, the condition may progress to a degeneration of the tendon (Achilles tendonosis), in which the tendon loses its organized structure and is likely to develop microscopic tears. Sometimes the degeneration involves the site where the Achilles tendon attaches to the heel bone. In rare cases, chronic degeneration with or without pain may result in rupture of the tendon. #Achillestendonitis #Achilles #tendonosis #heel #foot #feet #ankle #heelbone #tendon #podiatrist #footdr #vancity #health Thank you to Foot Health Facts for this information

With all that can happen to the feet and ankles during the fall and winter months, it is best to know what to do when faced with a condition or injury brought on by cold wet weather. In the case of a suspected fracture or sprain caused by a fall, see a podiatrist or visit the emergency room as soon as possible for prompt diagnosis and treatment. If medical care is unavailable, for temporary relief of symptoms, try the RICE principleRest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. But r...emember, delaying treatment can result in long-term complications, For feet that are exposed to cold and dampness for a prolonged period, soak them in warm water, avoiding hot water or direct heat. Soaking them in warm water will allow the feet to regain their normal temperature gradually. #feet #foot #fall #autumn #foothealth #injury #health #footdr #vancity #podiatrist Thank you to Foot Health Facts for the info See more

Toenail fungus often begins as an infection in the skin called tinea pedis (also known as athlete’s foot). The fungus often starts under the nail fold at the end of the nail. Over time, it grows underneath the nail and causes changes to its appearance, such as a yellow or brownish discoloration. It can also cause thickening and deformity of the toenail. Many people have difficulty with their toenails and need assistance in caring for them. High heels force women to stand and walk unnaturally, affecting the alignment of the ankles, knees, hips and lower back. Podiatrists say the majority of their patients are women. But not all foot problems related to wearing high heels require surgery. Luckily, many of these conditions can be treated nonsurgically with changes in shoe wear, padding, orthotics (shoe inserts), pain medications and other measures. Women's high-heeled shoes are not going out of style anytime soon.... But by recognizing pain as a warning sign, wearing high heels in moderation and seeking medical care when problems are in their early stages, women can stay fabulous on their feet. #highheels #shoes #footwear #foot #feet #ankles #women #podiatrist #heels #footdr #vancity #health #backpain #lowerback Thank you Foot Health Facts for the info

Custom orthotics can dramatically improve symptoms in the foot, ankle and remainder of the lower extremity. They can also improve posture, reduce strain on the lower legs and improve athletic performance. Furthermore, they perform functions that make standing, walking, and running more comfortable and efficient by slightly altering the angles at which the foot strikes a walking or running surface. #orthotics #podiatrist #podiatry #foot #feet #ankle #health #footdr #vancity #podsfixfeet #walking #running #wellness

Plenty of foot & ankle conditions start small and seem minor at first, but if left untreated, they can turn into a much bigger issue or affect more than your foot & ankle. Most issues can be treated conservatively, but if left too long, it may require more complicated treatment. Here are some common conditions that can create other issues if left untreated: Foot deformities, such as flat foot, can cause strain on tendons, ligaments or joint arthritis. Pes Cavus, or a high...-arched foot, can cause calluses or foot ulcers because of more pressure on the weight bearing parts of the foot. Bunions left untreated can encroach onto the second toe creating a crossover toe, which can lead to a ligament tear. Hammertoes can progress quickly and cause a painful blister, callus or even an ulcer if left untreated. They can also progress to a rigid (or inflexible) deformity, which can only be treated surgically if not addressed early on. If you’re experiencing pain or notice a change in the way you’re walking, make an appointment with a podiatrist as soon as possible. #foot #feet #footdr #vancity #podiatrist #walking #toes #health #ulcers #bunions #arthritis Thank you to Foot Health Facts for this info See more

A fungal infection may occur on any part of the body; on the foot, it is called athlete’s foot, or tinea pedis. Fungus commonly attacks the feet because it thrives in a dark, moist and warm environment, such as a shoe. Athlete's foot usually produces itchy, dry, scaling skin. It is commonly seen on the soles of the feet and in between the toes. In advanced cases, inflammation, cracks and blisters may form; an infection caused by bacteria can also result. The fungus can spread... to other areas of the body, including toenails. Avoiding walking barefoot combined with good foot hygiene can help reduce the spread of the fungus. Feet should be washed every day with soap and water and thoroughly dried, including between the toes. Feet should be kept as dry as possible. If your feet sweat a lot you may need to change your socks during the day. Antifungal powders, sprays and/or creams are often used to treat athlete's foot. Your podiatrist will recommend the best treatment for you. #foot #feet #athletesfoot #athlete #podiatrist #vancity #footdr #fungus #footfungus Thank you to Foot Health Facts

Do your athletic shoes bend in the middle? If so, they can put pressure on your heel and achilles tendon and cause injury, especially when playing any sport that requires running or jumping. The Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in the body and connects the calf muscle to the heel bone. When the middle of the sole in an athletic shoe collapses, pressure is transferred from the midfoot area to the heel, which can stretch the Achilles tendon excessively. This can lead to in...flammation, also known as Achilles tendonitis which includes pain, swelling in the tendon area following exercise. The leg may also feel stiff or tired. Rest, ice, anti-inflammatory drugs can relieve Achilles tendonitis. If symptoms persist visit your podiatrist. A torn or ruptured Achilles tendon requires surgery & recovery is often slow & involves extensive rehabilitation. Avoid Achilles tendon injuries: Replace your shoes every 400 miles; Always stretch and walk before beginning any strenuous exercise; Increase the difficulty of any new exercise programs gradually to allow your calf muscles to adjust and become more flexible #foot #feet #running #runningshoe #achillestendon #achilles #health #vancity #footdr #athleticshoe #athletic #podiatrist #shoe #shoes Thank you Foot Health Facts for info See more

This condition often develops after repeated ankle sprains. Usually, the giving way occurs while walking or doing other activities, but it can also happen when you’re just standing. Many athletes, as well as others, suffer from chronic ankle instability. People with chronic ankle instability often complain of: -A repeated turning of the ankle, especially on uneven surfaces or when participating in sports -Persistent (chronic) discomfort and swelling... -Pain or tenderness -The ankle feeling wobbly or unstable Chronic ankle instability usually develops following an ankle sprain that has not adequately healed or was not rehabilitated completely. Repeated ankle sprains often causeand perpetuatechronic ankle instability. Each subsequent sprain leads to further weakening (or stretching) of the ligaments, resulting in greater instability and the likelihood of developing additional problems in the ankle. Since children are growing and active, they can easily take a fall or two without skipping a beat. But if something seems more serious than the typical tumble, it is important to pay attention to early signs and symptoms. Like adults, children can experience foot and ankle pain stemming from various injuries or deformities, including fractures, sprains, heel pain, flat feet, bunions and hammertoes. These injuries or deformities are usually from overuse, improper footwear or a...re inherited. Frequently, parents may not even realize their child is experiencing foot and ankle pain. Because children are still growing, catching an injury or deformity early on is key to long-term success of treatment. Children in general do not complain of pain. If you have a young child who wants to be carried or is tripping and falling all the time, that’s when you should consider whether there might be something wrong. Bringing them in to your podiatrist can rule out any injuries or deformities. #foot #children #kids #feet #health #pain #shoes #vancity #footdr #podiatrist #podiatry Thank you Foot Health Facts for the info See more
