This patient presented with low back pain (LBP) that radiates into the left thigh & calf. A neuro-orthopedic examination indicated a diagnosis of discogenic LBP with left L5 radiculitis & additional findings of inhibition of the left gluteal muscles. Combined with manual soft tissue therapy and spinal manipulation, the patient was treated with neurofunctional acupuncture aimed to: Improve perfusion (blood flow) to the area to stimulate healing Modulate the activity of loc...al peripheral nerves to improve sensory and motor activity Decrease pain via stimulation of brain and spinal reflex pathways The following points were included: Axial points at T10-L1 (reflex vascular area for the lower extremity) & L4-S1 (affected somatic levels) BL40: tibial nerve & popliteal artery; powerful point for LBP & perfusion of the lower extremity GB34: common peroneal nerve; important point for sciatic-type pain; general systemic regulation BL58’: important functional point for LBP BL60: systemic regulation *Consent for the following media was provided by the patient* Feel free to message me for any comments or questions.
