Had so much fun leading VFIHA’s preseason camp the past couple weeks!! it was so great to be back on the ice with my athletes. Huge thank-you to @canucks and @rogersarena staff for your hard work in securing our ice time and helping us with ensuring a safe return to hockey for our players! Looking forward to a great season ahead!... Swipe to see our socially-distanced selfie! #neweraofselfies @mvmt_lab

When I got more into distance running after my hockey career came to a close, my approach to training was similar to what my body had been conditioned to do up until then: go as hard as you can & push through the muscle burn to get better (and if you don’t see improvement, you’re not pushing hard enough). This approach led me to continuous burnout at 7-8km, poor physiological recovery, and an aggravation of previous knee and hip injuries. This is a common mindset in today’s w...orld; the idea that the only way to succeed is to keep pushing harder and harder until you get there. But then we hit burnout, which can manifest in different forms: mental illness, heightened stress responses, poor sleep quality, difficulty focusing, poor recovery to physical & mental stress...the list goes on. These are all manifestations of our central nervous system () trying to protect itself. Sometimes we should be training harder.. but most of the time we should be training smarter. To get the most out of your time & effort, prevent injuries and succeed more efficiently, it is always best to consult with a health/fitness professional who will take the time to consider where you’ve been and where you want to go. Everyone’s situation is unique and should be considered with an individualized approach.

WE BAAAAACK! . Tomorrow. @mvmt_lab . BACK AT IT AGAIN! . I have taken this pandemic-induced downtime to take a step back, reset, and learn. An exciting part of my profession is the continually evolving research landscape; the health/movement field is constantly finding new (and better) ways to assess, treat, and monitor patients! As someone committed to lifelong learning..this is great news... . I hope you’ve all taken (or are actively taking) this time to do something positive for yourself. This will be different for all of us for some this may mean learning to tune-in to your body’s needs & relax; for others this may mean taking a course and learning new things. Either way, isssaaa good thing!! . I’m so ready to get back to caring for and hanging out with all of my wonderful patients. Let get to work!!! . **Couple extra things: I am now able to provide spinal decompression therapy (thanks to the wonderful @clairekassian for helping me with this), I am still providing concussion therapy presentations/webinars for interested teams/businesses (reach out to me if your business/company/group/team is interested), and I still have a couple appointment slots open for this week! GROUND CONTROL . I am so proud to be a member of the @mvmt_lab Team. Experiencing our space and working side by side with the most knowledgeable, open-minded, authentic practitioners has been so humbling, and has allowed me to grow so much as a therapist and health professional. . This emergency situation has hit us hard since having to close our doors to the public as it has so many other small businesses. But this team is special and we’ve got so many more people we’ve ...got to help (aka human puzzles to solve)!! . One of the coolest things about @mvmt_lab is our group rehab program: Ground Control. You may have seen it featured in my stories at some point or another! We normally have classes twice a day almost every weekday, and teachers include Dr. Jeff, @adrianokwallace , @thekrammer and myself. . We hold static positions for a set amount of time to isolate specific muscle groups (utilizing the growth concepts associated with isometric contraction) and tap into neuroplastic potential mechanisms, which hold the potential for LONG TERM CHANGE. In other words: if you want to change something, you have to do it often, you have to do it properly, and you have to do it for long durations (progressive overload). . We normally offer unlimited classes at @mvmt_lab for $90/month. We are now offering an online Ground Control program and though we are hurting from the current situation, we know everyone else is hurting too and we want EVERYONE to have access to our awesome rehab program!! So, the cost of the program is by donation Follow the link in my bio or through @mvmt_lab to join, or DM me to learn more!! . We can’t wait to get back to the clinic. In the meantime, STAY STRONG EVERYONE and we’ll see ya soon. See more
