This is my chin ups progress report, this video is from last week. I’m reluctant to count this as 3 chin ups. Call it 2.5. But still better than last time I checked in at 2! Again, not the best form, but pushing through. You can get stronger, even in your laundry room. #chiropractor #yorkregion #auroraontario #momlife

Now that kids are back in school I am finding some time to try to regain some strength. I have not done any strength training consistently since March of last year (pre-covid). I noticed that the more strength I lost, the more pain I had (specifically in my upper back and neck). One of my workout goals is to get my chin ups back! I used to be able to do about 8 chin ups in a set, now I can do 2. I’m going to keep at it and document my progress in strength and hopefully a decrease in pain! Stay tuned! #chinups #momlife #chiropractor #auroraontario #yorkregion #aurorachiropractor

The lockdown has drained us all mentally, but it is also taking a toll on our bodies. Very few people are actually set up to work comfortably at home. The result is long days working from your couch or kitchen table. This time of year, activity level often takes a hit BUT the lockdown has limited people’s outdoor and indoor options which is resulting in a lot more sedentary people. New parents are trying to power through without any support from friends and family, resulting in an increase in parenting injuries. For all these reasons it is a great time to get some chiropractic treatment. Whatever aches and pains you experience, I think we can all agree it is easier to push through these times without them. #chiropractic #workingmom #motherhood #selfcare #lockdown #yorkregion

I LOVE spending time with my daughter. It is one of my favourite things to do. The thing about lockdown is that, we are always together, and that’s a lot, even with your favourite people. So to all the parents out there, it’s ok to be burnt out. We are all burnt out. You’re not alone, and you’re not less than. Hang in there! #motherhood #parenting #lockdown #momlife #auroraontario #keswickontario #newmarketontario #yorkregion #workingmom

Hanging up decorations can cause injuries to shoulders from reaching and lifting, necks from staring up at the tree from the ground, and lower back from twisting and lifting at the same time. The best prevention is to set yourself up for success. Make sure you have the tools you need and take your time. Move the ladder when you need to, rather than reaching too far. Focus on proper lifting technique: bend at the hips rather than the back and brace your core/stomach muscles... before lifting. If you find yourself with aches and pains, book yourself an appointment by calling (905) 726-1525 or online at sjaconline.ca. Feel free to message me if you have any questions! #chiropractor #christmaslights #tistheseason

I would like to lead with saying, upper back strength is important for EVERYONE. However, in this post I will be focussing on its’ importance for my dancers. The muscles in your upper back have a lot of jobs. They keep your spine straight, your shoulders back and down (posture), they help support your head and neck, and they even play a role in your arm and shoulder movement. In addition to strengthening your movements, training your upper back also allows for better c...ontrol of those muscles, thus aiding in your ability to hold your posture and lift your arms properly. You can also avoid shoulder and back injuries due to muscle imbalances. If they chest muscles are stronger than those in the back, we start to see shoulders rounding forward and hunching. The moral of the story here is, don’t neglect your back muscles. Focus on controlling your arm movements with your back muscles, be aware of your shoulder blade movement and practice shoulder blade control. This will allow you to keep your arms soft while maintaining control and strength. Here is one exercise you can do. In a plank position up against a wall (hands on the wall in front of you), push into the wall by pulling your shoulder blades apart, keeping only a slight bend in your arms. Without changing the bend in your arms, draw your shoulder blades back to neutral position. Then, keeping your hands on the wall, draw your shoulder blades together (you will need to lean into the wall a little bit). This can also be done with up and down shoulder blade movement, or even combining all 4 movements together to make a circle/rolling motion. Happy dancing! #dancelife #chiropractor #training #auroraontario #yorkregion

We have always cleaned the table between patients, but now since covid we take cleaning to new levels! This clean is before any patients have even come in but I like to make sure the first person I see gets the same sanitized environment as the last! Every contact surface (table, chairs, handles to adjust the table and chairs, keyboard, mouse, desk, door handles, light switches, etc) all get cleaned between every patient. I wash and sanitize my hands between patients as well. If you have IFC, ultrasound, or shockwave as part of your treatment I sanitize those before and after use as well! So clean! #chiropractor #imalittlecrazy #momlevelclean #sanitize #covid19

A fairly common complaint from dancers (and dance teachers!) is claw toes. Essentially this means your toes are bent/curling under. This can happen when you point your feet, when you stand en fondu, and when you do rises. Toe clawing happens when you point because deep calf muscles are working too hard and the small muscles in your feet are not strong enough. You want to break this habit before you go en pointe because your pointe shoes will give you a line of blisters... on your toes AND you are at high risk for overuse injury to the calf muscles. When your toes claw on your weight bearing foot (gripping the floor) it usually means that the extrinsic muscles are working too hard and the intrinsic muscles of the toes are not strong enough. This will also happen if your weight held too far back on the heel. Clawing when you perform a rise means that the extrinsic foot muscles are working too hard and the intrinsic are too tight and too weak, also that the calf muscles are not strong enough. The good news is that claw toes are a fixable problem. With calf and foot stretches, massage, foot and calf strengthening, and balance exercises you can break this habit! A lot of these stretches and exercises are taught in pre-pointe class! If you are looking for help treating claw toes I am happy to have a look, treat the muscles, and prescribe exercises to help! Call (905) 726-1525 or visit sjaconline.ca to book your appointment :) What bad habit are you struggling with right now? When backpacks are used properly they are a great way to carry your things around at school. Backpacks that are worn incorrectly or packed too heavy can lead to back, neck and shoulder pain, as well are posture problems. What to look for in a backpack: - two shoulder straps, wide and padded - padded back... - lightweight - waist strap (good option for extra support) - rolling backpack is a nice option as well Wear it right: - always use both straps to help distribute the weight of the backpack! - tighten the straps (wear the bag close to the back) - pack it as light as you can, carry only what you need - keep heavier things low and toward the centre of the backpack - lift by bending your knees and be careful with swinging the bag and twisting until the backpack is secure on both shoulders - It can be helpful to carry some things separately in your hands in order take the weight off your back *Myth buster: while backpacks can cause injury, they do not cause scoliosis* #chiropractor #auroraontario #yorkregion #yrdsb

This one is for my dancers! Technique is a HUGE component of dance. Your teachers are probably always talking about it and making small corrections here and there. There is a very good reason for this! Aside from proper technique looking better, it also helps prevent injury. Ever heard of Trigger Toe? It is an overuse injury that is common in dancers. There is pain, increasing over time, along the inside of the ankle and under the foot while pointing (this is differe...nt from plantar fasciitis, although some of the treatment is similar). Good form in relevé is very important to help prevent trigger toe. Also, crunching your toes to force a pointe can aggravate the muscles in the foot and lead to trigger toe. So listen to your teachers, correct your technique, and hopefully you can avoid this injury! If you think you might already have trigger toe or are experiencing foot pain, please book an appointment! Treatment includes correcting your technique, modalities (usually ultrasound) to decrease inflammation, and stretching and soft tissue work on the muscles of the foot and ankle. You can call the clinic at (905) 726-1525, or book online at sjaconline.ca #dancer #dance #triggertoe #chiropractic #auroraontario #yorkregion See more

As a young athlete I remember being annoyed by cross-training (off-ice training, dry-land training). It made me tired and sore so that when I got on the ice it was harder to do my best. I was always scared to push myself in cross-training so I wouldnt rink an injury that would take me off the ice. As mentioned in my previous post, I skated on a chronic ankle sprain for a long time. That made it a risk to do any kind of jumping, off the ice, in case I rolled my ankle. Wha...t I failed to realize was that cross training was a necessity. It is easy to want to train only the aspects of your sport that you perform. For me, that was on ice training my programs. For a dancer, it might be focusing on the skills they need for their preferred dance discipline. For swimmers, it is training in the pool. Football, soccer, lacrosse, all focus training their positions on the field. While this is tempting, it is a recipe for injury. Only focusing your development in one area does strengthen you in that aspect but it also neglects to strengthen other aspects of your body. So while one part of you gets stronger, the rest gets weaker. So please, please, please, do your cross-training. If you have a weakness, dont edge around it, focus on it! #chiropractor #auroraontario #athlete #dance #figureskating #swimming #football #soccer #lacrosse #ringette #hockey #yorkregion See more

I was chatting with @missalex5678, director at @thenorthdancecompany, about bracing in dance and so I thought I would post about it! There is a time and place for a brace. In some cases it is necessary to support a joint through the motions that you complete day to day. Where issues occur is when braces are used as a replacement for joint strength. Braces should be TEMPORARY. When I recommend a brace to a patient it is to support them in their daily activities while the...y heal or, in the case of some of my athletes, until they are able to decrease aggravating activity. I almost always recommend strengthening exercises in addition to a brace. What can happen in the absence of exercise is, not only will the braced joint not get any stronger while it is supported, it will actually get weaker and require you to rely on the brace all the time. I will give you a personally example in the comments :). If you have a question or think you might need to brace a joint, please book an appointment to come talk to me! Call us at (905) 726-1525 or go to sjaconline.ca to book :) #chiropractor #aurorachiropractor #yorkregion #sprain #injury #athletes #dance #ringette #hockey #volleyball #figureskating #trackandfield #football #soccer #gymnastics

It seems like you hear a lot about core exercises these days. I often recommend core exercises to my patients, people of all ages and all strength levels. The type of exercises vary based on your needs and physical requirements, but essentially, everyone could use a stronger core. What is your core? We typically think of abdominal muscles and sometimes back muscles. The truth is, core stability also relies on pelvic muscles like glutes and hip flexors. ... Why do I need core strength? Weakness or instability of core muscles is associated with numerous injuries, depending upon what you ask your body to do every day. People who work at a desk all day typically end up with lower back pain. Dancers are prone to hip injury, knee injury, and low back injury. Runners can get IT band irritation, and the list goes on. How do I strengthen my core? Typically, I like to assess where my patients are strong, and where they are weak. This helps me pick out 3-4 exercises for them to do to improve their core stability. Here are a few good exercises to get you started :) - Abdominal hollowing: By tightening your abdominal muscles, draw your belly button in toward your spine. Think less like you are sucking in your stomach, and more like youre bracing for a punch to the stomach. Hold this contraction for 5-10 seconds, repeat 10-12 times each day. - Glute bridges: Lay on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Using you glutes (bum muscles), lift your hips so that you are creating a straight, diagonal line from your knees to your shoulders. Lower back down to the starting position. Repeat 12-15 slow repetition each day. - Leg lifts: Lay on your side, supporting your head with your arm or propping yourself up on your elbow. Bend your bottom leg to help balance. Keeping your body perpendicular to the floor, raise your top leg to about hip level. Do not let your top hip roll (it will want to roll back). Do 10-12 repetitions each day. If you are looking for an assessment of your strengths and weaknesses, or if you have other aches and pains, call us at (905)-726-1525, or visit sjaconline.ca

Back to reality everyone. After 6 months away from the traditional classroom setting, many students are going to be experiencing the aches and pains of desk work. Back to sports that test your limits, back to backpacks full of books, back to aches and pains. The same goes for adults who are starting back to work in the office. All the things your body may have once been accustomed to, may now be aggravating, such as sitting for prolonged periods of time or commuting. On ...the flip-side of that, home learning and working can be a challenge as well. A lot of my patients who are working/schooling from home do not have a designated work station. Many are working at kitchen tables, counters, and couches. These are typically not set up for ergonomic desk work. The benefit to working from home is that you typically get up and move around more (because there is more to do). You get up and make a cup of tea, you remember the laundry you meant to start, the dinner you meant to pull out of the freezer. While all this moving around is great, you likely still experience aches and pains. Ultimately, most of us could benefit from a visit to the chiropractor right now. Lets get back into routine the right way. Call us at (905) 726-1525 or book online at sjaconline.ca #aurorachiropractor #auroraontario #chiropractor #backtoschool #backtowork #yorkregion

@missalex5678 this one is for you! Normal muscle soreness from training usually begins to improve within 24-48 hours. You also typically dont feel muscle soreness until about 12 hours after activity, whereas you are more likely to feel an injury immediately. The following are signs that pain may be coming from an injury: Your pain wakes you at night You feel the pain at the start of training... Your pain increases with activity The pain makes you compensate (ie shift your weight or change your movements to avoid pain) If you are concerned about an injury, it is always best to get it checked out.Even if it is only muscle soreness, we can help your body recover and ease your discomfort! When I was at @thenorthdancecompany last week, Miss Alex and I were talking about common dance injuries. One of the things that came up was plantar fasciitis. What is plantar fasciitis? - inflammation of the plantar fascia - Seen more in people who spend a lot of time on their feet with poor arch support (ie barefoot or in shoes with poor support). Here is my guide to plantar fasciitis home care:... 1. Switch to shoes with good arch support (possibly an insert for your running shoes. The green superfeet insole is what I typically recommend. Occasionally I also make custom orthotics). 2. Wear shoes with arch support as much as possible. Even inside! For my dancers, here is where communication with teachers and parents is key! While you are healing you need supportive shoes at home and in the studio. 3. Stretch your feet and calf muscles! 4. After pain is reduced, rehab your feet to reinforce your natural arch! What I do in the clinic: 1. Soft tissue therapy for the plantar fascia and adjacent tissues (calf muscles, Achilles tendon). 2. Ultrasound on the plantar fascia. 3. Shockwave on plantar fascia (in some cases). 4. Manipulation/adjusting ankle joints. Do you have plantar fasciitis? Or think you might? While we have always cleaned the table between patients, we now use a stronger solution, and disinfect every surface that may have been contacted during each appointment. That means the parts of the table you touch, the parts of the table I touch, the desk, the computer, the chairs, the door handles, all get cleaned between every patient. I wash my hands thoroughly with soap and water between patients, and use hand sanitizer in the treatment room before contacting patients. ...I leave the door open when I clean the treatment room, in case my next patient is sensitive to the smell of the cleaning solution. I am masked and I ask that my patients are as well. We have taped off the waiting area to help patients distance from each other and the front desk, and we do our best to schedule so as to minimize patient interaction. I think weve covered everything! We keep interesting by having the baby letters call for the mommy letters (using the sound that that letter makes). #jkprep #prek #preschool #homeschool #earlychilddevelopment #uppercaselowercasematching #chiropractor #momlife #parenting #toddler
