Lots of requests for this yummy soup! And soooo warming and nice to have on a cold day! PLUS miso soup contains (surprise) miso which is a fermented condiment, which makes it easier on the body to digest and contains probiotics. Great for gut and immune health! I added some more vegetables than one would traditionally see in a miso soup (and I challenge and welcome you to do the same this is the perfect time to use up that bag of frozen vegetables sitting in the freeze...r, or those broccoli stalks that you should NEVER throw out!) Ingredients: 3-4 tbsp miso paste 4 cups broth (bone, veggie, chicken, beef, etc) 2 broccoli stalks chopped thinly 1 onion - chopped 2 handfuls spinach torn up cup chopped green onion 2 sheets nori 1 block silken tofu, diced Coconut oil Directions: Sautee broccoli and onion in coconut oil until translucent. Add broth. Dissolve miso paste in small amount of water so it doesn’t clumb Add to broth, add green onions, diced tofu. Simmer for 7 minutes Enjoy! As promised: one of my favourite treatment options. It is unfortunatly underused because it is sticky, and requires a bit of effort to start. But then it’s alllll about relaxation. And you can utilize it while you’re binging Netflix! (Yes, we’re all there. Lockdown on, show on, treatment on) So what is it? I'm talking about castor oil! ... Castor oil wonderful You’ve probably heard of it either for labour induction (not pretty) or as a beauty option (long lashes, hair treatments) I do NOT recommend taking it internally, ever, unless you want to have a bad time on the toilet. However, topically ... Castor oil has as been shown to increase circulation and promote elimination and healing to tissues and organs underneath the skin. It is particularly effective in being absorbed into lymph circulation which can improve digestion! Recommended for: - Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) - Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) - Constipation - Gastritis ++ Castor oil is useful in the treatment of sprains, strains, and injuries: - Reduces inflammation and edema - Stimulates the lymphatic system - Reduces the sensation of pain by decreasing substance P, a nervous system neurotransmitter. It has also been specifically used in cases of menstrual irregularities, and ovarian cysts and fibroids How do you use this seemingly magic oil? In order for it to penetrate deeply, it needs pressure. The best way to apply the oil is by soaking it in a piece of organic flannel, applying it to the targeted area (liver, abdomen, knees, etc), using a hot water bottle to aid in circulation and to apply that mechanical pressure It is STICKY so make sure you’re wearing something you don’t care about. And as always before starting any treatment, check in with your healthcare provider first. *** AVOID THIS IN PREGNANCY, and you want to make sure you’re being assessed before jumping to any conclusions. Always ask WHY before asking WHAT! #naturopathicmedicine #hamont #dundasont #burlingtonont #ancasteront #castoroil #beauty #lifestyle #wellness #kneepain #inflammation #painrelief #help #sore #athlete

It’s been a busy start to January! So happy that people are taking the time to address their concerns. This is just a small collection of what was treated this week in clinic. If you’re suffering from any of these, or something else entirely, and you’re ready to address it, reach out to your friendly naturopathic doctor I’ll share one my favourite treatment options later next week, that I often recommend for all of the above. Can you guess what it is? (Yes acupuncture, of c...ourse but this time it’s something different) ;) #naturopathicmedicine #herbalmedicine #acupuncture #dundasONT #hamONT #ancasterONT #burlingtonONT #healthy #herbalmedicine #botanicalmedicine #inflammation #pain #nutrition

Did this holiday season just seem to appear out of nowhere, or is it just me? Of course we all knew that things would feel a bit different this year. This time of year can be difficult, in normal circumstances. It’s dark, it’s cold, and it can be stressful. Movies focus on the cheer and the getting together and maybe that’s not what your end of the year is going to look like. So I just wanted to check in. If you’re struggling, please reach out. Know that you’re not alo...ne. Talk to a loved one and your healthcare practitioner. Don’t be afraid to reach out to others. As well, I suggest focusing on the following: Eat protein. Lots of sweets can spike blood sugar, and increase anxiety. Protein helps to regulate blood sugar. So after that cookie binge have a meal with vegetables and fish/chicken/nuts Get outside the weather outside is not dreadful. It’s fresh and freeing and allows you to escape annoying relatives (in person or zoom) Breathe make it a regular habit to take at least 2 minutes every few hours to breathe deep Vitamin D most likely you’ll need a supplement, but you can also get this from eating sardines, canned salmon, fortified eggs and dairy alternatives Move Whether inside or outside, take the time to focus on movement during the day Make sleep a priority you and most likely everyone else will thank you for this Keep your routine your routine as much as possible, stick to what you know works for you Go easy on yourself! Practice self love and self care. Give yourself credit for all you've done and focus on what you're grateful for I wish everyone a happy and loving holiday season. You know I’m here for whatever you need! #dundasont #hamont #burlingtonont #naturopathicmedicine #happyholidays #selfcare #protein #sleep #love #health #healthy #healthtips #exercise #breathe #mentalhealth

Ways I recommend detoxing aka all part of a healthy lifestyle, full of balance, moderation, and passion And remember - It’s always best to question, determine the cause, and support the body before jumping straight to a treatment or change that can cause more harm than good. Exercise: this increases the circulation of lymph and blood, allowing toxins to be filtered more efficiently ... Eat cooked foods take some work off of your digestive system by helping with breaking down food, before you eat it. This is especially helpful in colder months Sauna infared saunas show more research in regards to eliminating toxins, but saunas in general are great for so many reasons (improved immunity, increases circulation) Eat liver-supporting foods: beets, raspberries, garlic, onions, cruciferous veg (broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts), herbs such as cilantro, turmeric and rosemary, and bitter foods like dandelion, chicory, lemon - all help the liver process and neutralize toxins Drink plenty of water and herbal teas (milk thistle, nettle, green, dandelion root) flush and nourish Let go of anger and practice forgiveness big connection between anger and the liver in TCM Reduce stress. Our body needs to be in the parasympathetic state for all above to function properly #detox #healthy #health #lifestyle #dietculture #naturopathicmedicine #yogs #peace #life #hamont #dundasont #burlingtonont #ancasteront

When we sit down in your initial naturopathic intake we go over EVERYTHING. In DETAIL. Like what? We talk about your poop.... Undigested food? Tell me more. We talk about your menstrual cycle? What’s the colour? Any clots? Pain? We talk about your routine, how you feel throughout the day, energy dips and surges. We talk about the food you eat when you eat it, how you feel about it, and how it makes you feel. Your mood, your anxieties, how they impact you What goes on when you’re trying to fall asleep at night We get into it all. BECAUSE what goes on inside your body, your mind, and within your routine, tells us about the symptoms you’re experiencing. For example: bits of undigested food in your poop means you’re not absorbing your food as well as you should be. Anxious thoughts during the day and not being able to fall asleep at night can show us that your cortisol is out of wack. Bloating after meals could mean that you’re eating too much, too fast, or too wrong. What you experience with your period, in combination with sluggish bowels, could mean your hormones need balancing. Each question is a piece to the puzzle that is you. And together we can put those pieces together to meet the incredible and unique picture that is you! #naturopathicdoctor #hamont #dundasont #burlingtonont #herbalmedicine #digestivesystem #hormonehealth #healthtips #healthy #pms #tellmemore #anxiety #mood

. . . . Gotcha ! ... I dislike the idea that comes to mind when one thinks detox aimed at improving health, they often involve deprivation, lack in nutrients, often involve laxatives which can disrupt our gut flora and cause reliance. The focus is also often centered around weight loss which, yes, often occurs but this restriction can lead to disordered eating, unrealistic expectations, and rebound weight gain. Not to mention other possible risks: dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, impaired bowel function These are all too harsh and often people who seek them out are already in a weakened state of health. Depriving your body of essential nutrients and disrupting digestive function will make things worse, not better. Now, that’s not to say that the idea of detoxing is all bad. Our body is built to detox. And does so on a daily basis. Our skin, lungs, immune system, intestines, kidney, and liver, work to protect, metabolize, neutralize, filter and eliminate harmful substances. Our body is designed to defend itself from environmental insults and occasional excesses. Of course, this system can get out of wack for instance: if we’re not having regular bowel movements, our means of elimination are not ideal. But I do NOT recommend starting an intense laxative detox or juice fast as a treatment option for this. If you want to support your body and support your natural methods of detoxing yes, go for it. That’s part of a healthy lifestyle! I'll post my recommendations shortly. But if you're looking for a quick fix... I'm sorry, but a 10 day juice fast won't cut it. Your body takes on a lot, and it can take a long time for symptoms to develop or to get bad enough to finally warrant your attention. And sometimes it can take a longer than you want to get back to being you. But that doesn't mean it's impossible! Not at all! But it does require patience and celebration of each step forward. You can do it. I believe in you #naturopathicmedicine #hamONT #dundasont #detox #healthy #healthtips #healthyliving #liver #newyearnewme #dietculturedropout

What's the best way to focus on the immune system? Would it surprise you if I said... FOCUS on FOOD and focus on DIGESTION! ... A healthy digestive system is important for a healthy immune system, and our immune system relies on nutrients from the food we eat to function Here are some easy ways to support ourselves this winter: Eat more easily digested foods: think pureed, blended, cooked foods. (Soup, anyone?) Add heat with lots of spices: ginger, cinnamon, cumin, black pepper cayenne, etc. This is especially important if you’re enjoying those healthy cold foods (cinnamon, and ginger, or chai tea as a base of smoothies is delicious) Make sure you’re eating! Make time for consistent, well-rounded meals (protein, fat, fruit/vegetable example: chilli with avocado, roasted broccoli with hummus) GARLIC not only is this tasty, it also fights of bugs with its antimicrobial properties, and helps with circulation! Vitamin C a potent antioxidant that helps support your immune system and your response to stress. Bell peppers, lemons, and it’s clementine season! Vitamin D it’s winter.. so we are not exposed to the sun as often, and we’re also farther away form the sun, meaning we can’t produce as much as we need this time of year. Vitamin D is often fortified in dairy products, and dairy alternatives! It’s also in egg yolks, and fatty fish, especially canned sardines and salmon. I recommend looking into supplementing this, but check with your health care provider for more information. And as always... Stress relief: high stress can impact our digestion AND immune system. Work on deep breathing, choose healthy foods, fruits and vegetables most often, and remember to take care of yourself and make your health a priority. Crock pots are the best! It’s so nice to come home to a warm meal, and even better when you know it’s healthy and yummy. And even BETTER when it takes barely any time to prepare it! Right? Let’s make dinner (and breakfast/lunch leftovers!) that much easier. No need to stress. ... So this is a very versatile stew. I honestly just used what was in my fridge and cupboards in it (always helpful to stock up on beans, canned tomatoes, coconut milk, and lentils when they’re on sale! Easiest things to throw in a crock pot). I also used bone broth that I had frozen into ice cubes Feel free to modify the spice, and add in or substitute what you have in the fridge, or use any of your favourites! Ingredients: 2 onions, chopped 1 bell pepper, chopped 3 cups broth (veggie, bone, chicken, or use water) 5 cloves garlic, chopped 1 eggplant, sliced into inch slices* 1 sweet potato, chopped 1 can chopped tomatoes 1 can beans (black, kidney, chickpeas) 1 cup dried lentils 1 tsp chili powder 2 tsp cumin 1 tsp turmeric 1 tsp black pepper 1 tsp salt 1 tbsp hot sauce or 1 tsp cayenne pepper Worthy additions: broccoli, cauliflower, parsnips, carrots, mushroom, celery *I love eggplant, so this was worth it for me but feel free to omit because it is an extra step: coat eggplant in olive oil and salt and broil for 10 minutes, then add to the crockpot. Delicious Directions: Chop all veggies, add to crockpot, add beans, lentils, spices, broth. Cover, and cook on low for 6-8 hours. Enjoy! Have you tried cupping?! You’ve most likely seen the marks they leave behind every so often they’re all the rage when an athlete or celebrity shows them off I love using cupping as part of my acupuncture treatments. Cupping is much like the inverse of massage. rather than applying pressure to muscles, it uses gentle pressure to pull them upward. This is an interesting sensation, and is very relaxing and relieving... Cupping can be used to relieve pain. A guiding principle of Traditional Chinese Medicine states: Where there’s stagnation, there will be pain. Remove the stagnation, and you remove the pain Stagnation is also referred to as congestion or blockage, of Qi, phlegm, lymph, and/or blood. This not only results in pain, but also the majority of illness as seen in a TCM view. Proper healing cannot occur without proper, unobstructed flow The suction applied by cupping works to break up that congestion, aiding circulation, and allowing nutrition via blood and oxygen to go where it needs to go So not only does it feel great, it works to restore that free flow in the body. And yes you will most likely end up with big beautiful suction bruises on the body they do not hurt like a bruise, and they will fade naturally #acupuncture #cupping #massage #painrelief #sportsinjury #naturopathicmedicine #dundasONT #hamONT #burlingtonONT #naturopathicdoctor #natural #backpain #pain

Insulin you probably are aware that insulin controls our blood sugar. It is released when we consume carbs (and fat and protein, but less so) so that we can take glucose(sugar) out of our blood and into our tissues. Insulin is our storage hormone. Insulin has a special relationship with cortisol. When cortisol levels rise, (when were stressed, etc check out my last few posts) it floods the body with glucose (via actions in the liver) so that the muscle and brain ... have an immediate energy source: glucose = energy = ability to think, and then fight or flight - which ultimately lowers our blood sugar, and goes back to normal. However, our chronic stress doesnt always result in a fight or flight response, these days. (Sitting, stressed out in traffic doesnt require any movement in our body!) So, our blood sugar stays high, resulting in insulin release to lower that blood sugar SO what happens when we have chronic stress? Well, our adrenals will continuously pump out cortisol, leading to constant glucose in our blood = high blood sugar levels = chronic insulin release = eventual insulin resistance Chronically elevated cortisol results in increased insulin This is bad for a number of reasons: Can lead to type II diabetes Spurs fat storage Elevated insulin is inflammatory High levels have been linked to obesity and heart disease High levels can suppress the bodys immune system Not good... and so, managing cortisol and insulin is KEY Check back to my previous posts to learn more about controlling cortisol, and stay tuned to learn more about blood sugar regulation If any of this speaks to you, reach out to your ND to learn more! #sugar #carbs #naturopathicmedicine #hamont #burlingtonont #dundasont #yum #stress #chronic #inflammation #getbetter #heart #healing #health #youcangetbetter #anxiety #depression #mood

As always - start with the basics! Depending on where you are individually: high-strung, burnt-out, etc, you will do better with different modifications, and I do recommend reaching out to your friendly neighbourhood ND to help you identify and target this properly. Regardless, the following are things that I encourage you to start its amazing what you will notice when you start to focus in on these everyday things you can work on... Eat Eliminate food triggers. You know some of them: those foods that make you feel BAD after eating. (Stomachaches are not a normal side effect of eating!!) Others are harder to identify, but often they are: gluten, dairy, food additives and preservatives, SUGAR Replace with phytonutrients! AKA fruit and vegetables Focus on good quality fats and proteins Combine these all together for the perfect plate: veg, the rest starch (quinoa, ) and protein dress with 2tbsp olive oil Craving a snack? Pair fruit with protein/fat to balance blood sugar levels: and almonds for eg Fix - your gut, specifically! Removing food triggers helps here, but also: eat fermented veg, remove/reduce use of gut-disrupting medications (talk to your dr!), FIBER Sleep - I know this may be difficult, since symptoms include insomnia. Supporting melatonin (hormone that regulates sleep and wake) is When melatonin is high, cortisol is low, and you are ready for Melatonin is produced in darkness practice sleep hygiene starting when the sun goes down: Turn off overhead lights, rely on lamps Shut down electronics, or use blue light blocking glasses Aromatherapy: lavender essential oil has been shown to increase blood levels of melatonin. Use a diffuser, spray on your pillows, or smell directly Meditate, journal, yoga - do anything you can to reduce stress before bed And my #1: DO SOMETHING FUN A hobby, dance around, sing, cook something you love, chat with friends do something that makes you smile and picks you up +++ if it involves being in nature - added benefit! So: start here, and ask for help!!Things dont become imbalanced on a whim, and they arent going to improve without work

Cortisol is known as our main stress hormone, and so it gets a bad rep. Cortisol is actually so important it is anti-inflammatory, and is important for blood sugar management! The challenge with cortisol is that we need it in a proper circadian rhythm It should be spiked up first thing in the morning, with a gradual fall through the day Its easy for this rhythm to go wack. It happens with stress: emotional, psychological, environmental, chemically induced, all or any. Ou...r brain sees feels this stress, and reacts whether its actual, anticipated, or imagined. The brain then cues our adrenal glands (altogether, the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis, to produce adrenalin and norepinephrine immediately. Then approx 15 min later, cortisol is released. In the presence of a threat, this surge in cortisol is key it it provides the energy needed to cope. And normally, once the threat is gone, levels even out. However, if you are in a constant state of perceieved stress: you end up with excessive cortisol secretion, which can have crippling effects, including: Suppressed immune system, and increased risk of autoimmune disease Increased blood sugar levels Weight Gain Digestive problems Long term effect of chronic stress results in cortisol failing to function. This can lead to stress-induced inflammation, causing: Bone and muscle breakdown Fatigue Depression Pain Memory impairment It is essential that we learn proper methods of coping with stress, and to address the underlying cause of stress. Easier said than done, of course. This is where a proper healthcare team comes into play! Cortisol is complicated so Ill continue some more posts about it, going into more detail about the optimal cortisol curve, low vs high, and of course some things you can do to test, and improve! Alright lets get into it Your hormones are constantly talking with you and giving you feedback. They are often intertwined and it isnt always easy to tease out exactly what is going on (because, usually, inflammation is present, which adds burden to all hormonal systems. Inflammation interrupts cell signalling which affects the entire hormonal cascade causing hormonal disturbance everywhere) So were going to talk hormones, and were going to talk inflammation. ... Lets start off with an introduction to some hormones Cortisol: your main stress hormone follows a rhythm throughout the day: high in the morning and tapers off at night. When this curve is thrown off, you can experience weight gain, insomnia, inflammation, low energy, food cravings Adrenaline: quick response stress hormone! Our fight or flight Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone: our sex hormones. Estrogen: joyful and strong, progesterone: calm and allows for sleep, testosterone: libido, allows for muscle growth when any are out of balance: irritation, PMS, skin changes, hair growth/loss, weight gain, insomnia, and issues with fertility. Insulin: Allows for storage of nutrients (glucose, amino acids, fats) into our cells. Main job is to lower blood sugar. Out of balance, can cause sugar cravings, weight gain, fatigue, depression, inflammation. Resistance occurs in PCOS, diabetes Thyroid Hormones: support nearly every body system controls metabolism and growth. Symptoms of dysfunction are widespread: changes in: poops, the menstrual cycle, hair and skin, weight, mood, etc. SO many factors affect our thyroid, including STRESS Leptin, Ghrelin, Adiponectin: important hormones in regulating hunger and body fat The above list is limited and does not go into much detail Ill be talking more about each one, symptoms of imbalance, and what you can do if you suspect an imbalance. Please remember that this is an instagram post, and you are an individual. You may experience symptoms that could be an imbalance of many, or inflammation, or both! I strongly encourage you to book an appt with your healthcare provider rather than doing all the guesswork on your own! #naturopathmedicine

COVID-19 directly affects the lungs While people with lung disease are not more likely to get the virus, they are more likely to have a more serious case if they do... Info on susceptibility of those who smoke and COVID-19 is still forthcoming. We do know that those who smoke are 2-4x more likely to contract bacterial and/or viral infections. Smoking (tobacco, cannabis, anything) affects the lungs - Ingredients in e-cigs, cannabis, and vape products can damage your lungs and may make it harder for your immune system to fight infections Motivation and desire is a HUGE factor in quitting and now, more than ever, is a good time to quit! If you use cannabis, try switching to an oil or use edibles. If youre using these products for a certain health condition inflammation, anxiety, chronic pain there are other products and options that you can utilize that can have less damaging effects on the lungs This is an addiction - quitting isnt easy. Stop scrolling Put 1 hand on your chest and the other hand on your stomach Breathe in through your nose, fill your belly with air. Your belly should rise and your chest should stay still. Breathe out through your mouth 2-3x times longer than you inhaled. Repeat... This breathing exercise is helpful in reducing stress; if you have asthma, it can do even more. It strengthens your diaphragm and can result in a reduction of med use and intensity of asthma symptoms, as well as better exercise tolerance There are different types of asthma, with chronic airway inflammation a consistent feature, as well as airway remodeling (hence training the diaphragm to aid breathing!) In regards to asthma and COVID-19: the importance is how well managed your asthma is. Pts with controlled asthma are not at higher risk of severe infection, but uncontrolled asthma is a clear risk factor. The concern is the clear link between (any) virus infection and asthma exacerbations. Pts are advised to continue with their routine meds. There are conflicting studies on how inhaled corticosteroids play a role: some show they may impair antiviral immune response, others show normal responses, and some show benefits. Pts are advised to continue with their routine medication We do know that systemic corticosteroids suppress the immune system. They are recommended when treating severe exacerbations, and brief courses are not expected to chances of getting COVID but lets see what options there are out there to help risk of corticosteroid use: Breathing as above, and pursed lip breathing Vit C low levels linked with asthma Omega 3s reduce inflammation Mediterranean diet - reduces symptoms VEGETABLES, NUTS, FISH, PLANT PROTEIN Probiotics modulate the immune response and inflammatory process, esp allergic Magnesium relaxes bronchial smooth muscles, improves lung function Modulating the immune system, reducing inflammation, and improving lung function and capacity are all important targets As always - youre an individual. I bought these at the beginning of the year with the intention of running my first marathon in them - the goal being before my 30th birthday And then, the world changed The idea of running my first marathon virtually was not appealing - but I did instead sign up for a virtual half marathon.... I didnt plan a route, or a day to run. I just ran it one day, enjoying 21km of the beautiful trails in the Dundas Valley Conservation Area. I was unprepared - but I did it These past months, that is one of the hardest things I have learned. To learn to be okay with the unknown, with not being able to plan. With facing things, less prepared than I would normally or have liked to have been. It hasnt been an easy lesson for me. I like to at least have an idea of what to expect! When everything first shut down and I had to stop practicing, all I could think about was needing to know when I could get back to work. It took a while to come to terms in knowing that we just dont know. I learned to be okay with this, to work with what I could do, and to appreciate the role I have And I am VERY grateful for what I have, and what I can do After I ran, I posted about my time/route, feeling a bit down about my time. The feedback I got was so incredibly kind, uplifting, and motivating (thank you, the running community is truly amazing ) this again reinforces another lesson We all have our own inner dialogue, we have our own experiences, our own feelings, our own personal struggles - and yet we are all together. What Im going through may not be at all the same as what you are, but being able to be there, to lift one another up - THAT is what matters. Standing together for Black Lives Matter. Standing 6 feet apart. We NEED to be together. It makes ALL the difference We need to be open to listening, to learning, to changing, and above all, to supporting one another in good #dundasont #hamont #covid19 #quarantine #virtualhalfmarathon #blm #support #run #community #quarantine #marathon #naturopathicmedicine #burlingtonon #newbalance #training #virtualrace #learning @ Dundas Valley Conservation Area

Keeping this heartbeat going : Those with a history of heart disease (HD), or who have a risk factor for HD or stoke are at higher risk of suffering complications if infected with COVID-19. Monitor and manage your symptoms and to seek care when needed!! There are apps available promoting self-care and HD. Heart Failure Storylines was found to be the most functional If you or a loved one have HD, I recommend checking it out! Since HD is prevalent in older adults who may re...quire more training to use an app or monitor symptoms, always ensure that care is sought out when necessary, and highly consider working closely with a healthcare practitioner, such as an ND, to optimize health How? Heart disease refers to a group of conditions that affect the structure and functions of the heart. Heart failure, cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, etc, etc Diet and lifestyle are a huge focus here: want to reduce alcohol, smoking, stress, increase medically-supervised exercise, and follow a Mediterranean diet (NUTS, FISH, VEGETABLES, OLIVE OIL, GARLIC!) Fish oil: omega 3 FA reduce inflammation, improve lipids Hawthorn: improves cardiac efficiency and blood pressure CoQ10: this antioxidant is concentrated in heart muscle and deficiency is associated with HD Motherwort: target anxiety and heart palpitations HD is a broad topic and involves treating YOUR underlying cause + concerns, managing med side effects, interactions, assoc. nutr. depletions And dont forget about PREVENTION if youre at risk, Im calling on you to act! There are tons of resources available @heartandstroke about how to manage heart disease through this pandemic (#1 know how to, and contact your healthcare practitioner!!!) Lets get into it! Staring with: High blood pressure, or hypertension, is often called the silent killer. It increases risk of heart, brain, and kidney dx, with often no obvious symptoms to warn you. When I take BP in office people are often surprised to discover their BP is elevated Some symptoms to watch out for headaches, nosebleeds, buzzing in your ears, irregular heartbeat, vision changes and severe include nausea, confusion, and/or chest pain. If youre sedentary, ...smoke, eat a diet high in processed foods and low in fruits and veg, and have a family history of hypertension, you may be at risk Some studies have shown that people with high BP have weaker immune systems. There is conflicting research about the risk of COVID-19 and meds used to lower BP. Some studies show increased risk from taking the meds, and some show increased risk not taking the meds Bottom line: more research is needed, there is too much unknown, meds to lower blood pressure are indeed necessary depending on YOUR INDIVIDUAL SITUATION, and there ARE things YOU can do to address concerns of high blood pressure How? Increase physical activity at least 30 minutes walking daily (can be split up during the day), try out a 10 min yoga video (bonus stress relief) Increase your fruit and veg intake at LEAST 5 daily Cut down, ideally stop, smoking Follow the Mediterranean diet (lots of fruit and veg, fish, nuts, veg protein) Manage stress meditation, phys act, being in nature, journaling, therapy Eat a handful of walnuts and almonds daily Enjoy a couple cloves of garlic daily (combine with avocado and olive oil ) There are tons of supplements as well Coenzyme Q10 is cardioprotective. Magnesium helps with managing stress, improves endothelial function, acts as a vasodilator. Hawthorne, hibiscus, and linden make lovely heart teas But we would need to assess where exactly you need help and focus: Stress? Sleep? Dietary? Is there something deeper going on? Always question the why before adding the what!! ** DO NOT make any changes to your medications without guided supervision. You are unique and your needs are unique! #naturopathicmedicine #health #immune #heart #stress

As the world continues to move forward: reopening, rebuilding, re-normalizing we cant forget that COVID-19 is also continuing. With the happy news of businesses reopening, I encourage everyone to also celebrate the reopening of health practitioners. Now, more than ever, is the time to utilize these services. We are aware that certain populations are more vulnerable to contracting illnesses, including COVID-19, and are more likely to suffer serious consequences. This incl...udes people with underlying health conditions: heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, chronic kidney disease, and people carrying excess weight If you identify with any of these conditions, and youre ready to take a good look at your current health, I recommend adding a naturopathic doctor to your healthcare team. There is a lot that can be done to address your goals and optimize your health. This is not always easy, and so having an ND can help support and make your steps forward more manageable. NDs have done the research; NDs get to know all the ins and outs of you, and your health journey; NDs help you to identify the main concerns, main issues, and work with you to address these and support necessary changes The most important part of this is that you are an individual, and you have your own individual concerns, causes, and changes that need to be made. I want to share more information this month about how a naturopathic doctor may approach a particular condition but please remember that you are an individual, and so the information may not apply to you directly If you do not have any of the above conditions naturopathic medicine is still an option for you! An ND also focuses on PREVENTION Youre not sick, lets make sure you stay that way Our immune systems can be thrown off by a lot: poor sleep, poor nutrition, smoking, poor gut health, mental health concerns, STRESS If any of these call out to you your immune system needs some help Now is the time. Optimize, prevent, heal #immunesystem #stress #anxiety #health #naturopathicmedicine #dundasont #hamont #doctor #information #gethelp #guidance

The sunshine vitamin. This special guy has been quite the topic of conversation lately. Not only are we getting lots more of it lately (beautiful weather, people are getting back outside), it also plays an important role in our immune system Many studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency impairs immune function and promotes inflammatory reactions Deficiency has been shown in a number of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions: asthma, arthritis, MS, type I diabetes ...Vit D is necessary for healthy macrophages, allowing them to respond more effectively to infection Vit D does not work by itself: sufficient stores of all nutrients are important to keep the immune system in check (e.g: zinc, vitamin A, vitamin C, omega-3s) Vit D also contributes to bone strength, heart health, skin health, lung health, and fertility!! Our #1 source of Vit D is through sun exposure our skin produces it, and then is metabolized via the liver, kidneys, and other tissues our bodies are so cool) However we really havent been going outside much these days. AND if we are how much sunscreen are you slathering on? (and is it full of toxins see my previous post!) Living north means that we also get fewer direct sun rays. Having darker skin also reduces ability to produce vit D. It can be harder to get vit D from food it is often fortified in milk products, but it is also a fat-soluble vitamin so we need to have healthy guts to absorb it! If youre concerned about your Vit D status you can get this tested. It is a blood test that costs approximately $35-40. I do not recommend starting a supplement, esp high dose, without getting tested. Because it is fat-soluble it is stored in our body, and can build up. Sun absorption is safe but limit to reduce skin cancer risk. Aim for 15-25 minutes of sun exposure daily before applying sunscreen I of course had to mention vitamin D and #fertility vitamin D receptors are present in the ovaries, uterus, and the placenta. It can improve IVF outcomes, improve insulin restance in PCOS, and affets ovarian reserve (+ more!) #naturopath #IVF #medicine #pcos #immunesystem #prevention #vitamind #hamont #dundasont

SUNS OUT, BUGS OUT Lets talk outdoor care Our skin is our largest organ, and it absorbs. Whatever youre putting on your skin has the potential to be absorbed systemically, affecting our health. It is always a good idea to take a look at the ingredients of anything youre applying: sunscreen, bugspray, makeup, creams everything Recommended to avoid in sunscreen:... Oxybenzone: most common ingredient used, is a UV filter. This is a concern regarding hormone disruption and skin penetration. It has the potential to mimic normal hormonal regulation in the body, meaning it can cause issues with the thyroid and with reproductive hormones. It has been found in amniotic fluid, breastmilk, urine, and blood. Be even more careful with children as they can accumulate more toxins, more quickly, due to their smaller size Any chemical additives: parabens and fragrance for example Preservatives: can cause allergies and irritation Aerosol sprays: more chance of inhalation as well, and worse for the environment SPF >50: may have a higher concentration of toxic ingredients, and really doesnt provide much more protection Recommended sunscreens: Mineral sublocks: zinc oxide or titanium dioxide: these provide physical block, reflecting the rays SPF 30-50: provides adequate protection Utilize @environmentalworkinggroup skin deep database, or @thinkdirty and look for rating of 1-2 @thinksport @badgerbalm are good options! Staying covered, and seeking shade remains the best protection, but is not always doable! In regards to bug repellants: many essential oils have bug-repellent activity. There has been research done on a few, including: lavender, clove, eucalyptus, catnip, lemongrass, and basil You can make your own bug repellent with a few drops of any of the above mixed with pure witch hazel and water. You will need to apply this often! Personally I have been loving this product from @christheherbalist smells great, and WORKS! Using DEET at concentrations of 10-30% is recommended in heavy wooded areas, where there is heavy tick and Lyme disease present, as well as staying covered!!! #sunscreen #natural #safechoices #naturopathicmedicine #bugrepellant

The Healing Power of Nature is one naturopathic guiding principle. This principle highlights the idea that the body is inherently able to heal itself, as obstacles are removed and if necessary treatments are provided. The body works hard own its own to support recovery This principle also encompasses the fact that spending time in nature is itself healing Nature makes us healthier and happier people. Research has shown this time and time again... Children exposed to nature have increased self esteem, and improved concentration Interacting with nature can help with symptoms of depression and anxiety Exposure to nature can reduce blood pressure and improve vitality Today is Earth Day. These days, more than ever, you have probably noticed the healing effect of nature. We need to continue to fight for nature. We need to step up The Earth is amazing, and deserves to be celebrated and taken care of, as it continues to take care of us I encourage you to do your part! We are all feeling the impact of COVID-19 The unknown can be terrifying. Feeling like things are out of control can leave us feeling powerless... As a society, there are ways we can gain back that control: Through education, focusing on the facts, from reliable sources (such as the World Health Organization) Show empathy and caring for those around you Wash your hands, regularly, effectively, as soon as you enter any building If you are sick, minimize your exposure to others, to avoid spreading illness to others Be mindful of your hygiene practices Greet with a wave rather than a handshake Stay connected to loved ones and to the community As an individual, you have control! Clean your cellphone and surfaces you touch regularly Avoid touching your face Boost your immune system: berries, vegetables and fruit in every colour - contain lots of vitamins and minerals that our immune systems need Reduce/eliminate sugar and alcohol intake Practice stress-reduction: practice yoga at home, mediate for 5 minutes daily Breathe, deeply If you have been in contact with someone with coronavirus; if you think you might have coronavirus call Telehealth: 1-866-797-0000 or Hamilton Public Health COVID-19 hotline at 905-546-2424 ext 7970 As a healthcare practitioner, I will continue to keep my clinic space clean and a safe space for healing, working to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Lets talk bedtime routine! Sleep hygiene is key to getting a good sleep. if youre lying in bed for hours before finally easing off to dreamland, then this post is for you. So..sleep hygiene? Essentially, its providing yourself a soothing routine with good habits in order to promote a deep, restful sleep. When someone comes to me with sleep problems, its important to go over their current routine and make adjustments as needed. These include: Assessing caffeine - Wha...t time do you last have a dose? Caffeine can stay in your body for longer than you think - and this varies depending on you specifically! Your bedroom - You should associate your bedroom and bed with sleep and sex - other activities !!especially studying and work!! should be done elsewhere Sleep schedule - is there any routine here? Our body CRAVES cycles and routine. A consistent sleep schedule - going to bed at the same time, waking up at the same time - will do wonders AND my top 2 things to recommend: 1. Gratitude journalling - fall in love every night. Simply allowing your focus to fall in the positive can shift that focus drastically, to remain in the positive. Write down 3-5 things about the day that you appreciate, that you love, that youre grateful for 2. SET A TIMER to remind you to go to bed! 30-45 minutes before your bedtime, have that timer go off, and start your routine. Do a castor oil pack, get out that book, start your journal, meditate, do a face mask, have some tea.. whatever soothes you and helps you relax.. Set aside your electronics. This is YOUR time, for YOU. Sleep is so important!! This is when we recover from the day. We release important hormones to build tissue and muscle and hormones to regulate appetite. Sleep is vital for brain plasticity - If we sleep too little, we become unable to process what weve learned during the day and we have more trouble remembering it in the future. For a time that seems "unproductive" it is the opposite! Fall in love each night with a routine that works for you! Thanks @bornruffiansmusic for the lyric! #sleep #dundasont #hamont #healthy #facts #tips #naturopathicmedicine #music #bornruffians #love #gratitude

Do you feel an energy shift when youre under a tree canopy? You may notice it most with cedar, spruce, or pine trees, standing in their beds. Nothing grows in these fallen needle/leaf beds. The essential oils released from the leaves/needles of these trees act to repel insects, molds, fungi, bacteria, and viruses. These plants are used both topically and internally for these medicinal properties A salve made from Norway spruce was studied for its antimicrobial effect again...st gram- and gram+ bacteria in infected skin ulcers. Pine has been to inhibit growth of candida albicans. Thuja (cedar) leaves have been accepted as a broad spectrum antimicrobial - Thuja oils contain more than 30 different volatile compounds, working synergistically together to achieve this activity When we listen and pay attention, we can see and feel what nature is giving us **** These herbs are all very strong and can be toxic in large quantities, and are not often recommended for long periods of use - always talk to an educated professional before adding herbal medicine into your routine! #naturopathicmedicine #herbals #hamont #dundasont #cedar #antimicrobial #nature #natural #herbtalk #listen #slowdown #energy #plantknowledge #plants #forest

twenty years ago, harvard square. this was my job and i did it most days of the week. years. thousands of hours. i had no idea what it was teaching me, or that... teaching was happening. but the education i got on that box was worth more than the one i would have gotten in any fancy-ass arts college or music conservatory. it taught me how to hear. how to pay attention. how to see, and be seen. the trick of how to pretend that what youre doing - when its bizarre, taboo or ridiculous - is perfectly pedestrian as people look on in total confusion while you non-chalantly apply white face paint and wig to yourself on a busy city street. and most importantly, this: how to stand still. how to stand still in the face of crazy people screaming at you, strangers trying to grab you, children throwing objects at you, fearful dickheads trying to break your peace of mind and focus. stillness. i learned it all up on that box. there is a reason i can handle any troll, any journalist, any cataclysmic fuck-up, any stage collapse situation, and any other setback. the box taught me. i thank the box on which i stood. it trained me well. sometimes i miss it. it was simpler. but was it? every street performer i know walks forever through the world with a certain untouchable magic that never goes away. once the street teaches you to perform to a hostile but curious universe, you dont develop stiff armor against conflict...its the opposite. you develop a soul 1,000 miles wide that can absorb slings and arrows like a black hole. ....... photo by robert castagna, who randomly posted it up on instragram. Ive been posting lately about the way we talk with others - what about the way we talk to ourselves? Today I headed for a run and after 3 minutes.. went home. Body was not feeling it Automatic thoughts that come up: whats wrong with you? Youre weak. You dont deserve to have a good day. How awful is that?? I would never say that to a friend - to ANYONE - in this situation. But - I caught myself. I nourished myself. Had a nice breakfast, stretched, and I nourished my mind w...ith good wishes. And when I was feeling it, went for that run. Im thankful that I was kind to myself and allowed my mindset to be healthy Our minds are so powerful. The energy we give out, to ourselves (and others) has an impact on our health A study done on plants shows how destructive negative comments can be. 2 plants in identical controlled environments: each had the same amount of light, nutrition, and water. One plant got praise and love, while the other only insults. After 30 days, the complimented plant was healthy and thriving - and the bullied one was droopy and wilted. Not the most scientific study, but there have been variations of this idea done, such as studying water crystals responses to negative and positive thoughts Its been found that individuals with a positive attitude towards old age are likely to live longer and in better health than those with a negative attitude One study split hotel maids, who did not perceive themselves as being physically active, into 2 groups. The 1st group was educated to understand that they were meeting the general reqs for daily activity in their jobs. The others were told nothing. One month later, the educated group showed a decrease in systolic blood pressure, weight, and waist-to-hip ratio - with no change to lifestyle factors, it is believed to be explained only by the change in the womens mindset! Our perception and the love we feel towards ourselves is so important. We need to focus on how we talk to ourselves just as we focus on proper food and exercise. Our energy, our Qi needs nourishment in all aspects I could go on and on about the mind-body connection - and I will! #hamont #dundasont #run

Hey, baby.. Do you ever just resonate with a song, or feel the power of certain lyrics or music? Currently have Tom Petty constantly in my ear reminding me to stand my ground, and it pumps me up Why do we have such a strong feelings when it comes to music?... Looking again at heart health in TCM: Music is regarded as the best connection with Shen Interestingly, the writings of music and herbal medicine in Chinese language looks very similar (swipe) TCM uses 5 elements music therapy as an effective intervention in improving quality of life in advanced cancer patients, its been shown to decrease national anxiety score, and could regulate the emotion of CFS patients, relieve depression and anxiety, improve the fatigue symptoms All incredibly fascinating.. but Toms songs dont exactly follow a certain TCM pattern, and yet his music (and tons more, just using this as an example) makes me, and others, feel good... why? I think this is a very subjective question, as everyone is of course an individual and has their reasons and preferences. But it again comes together in the sense of connection Connection to emotions that come up Connection to lyrics to express what we cant ourselves Connection to certain chords or tunes that can bring us back to a time, place, feeling, person Connection to others also listening to music - studies have found that when watching live music, feelings of self-worth and being close to others both improved by 25% and mental stimulation by 75% There are many different forms of music therapy out there. And there is no doubt that music provokes a strong emotional response. Im just scraping the surface on what music can do for people, for health, and its role in medicine Starting a conversation, maybe even a connection? #musictherapy #naturopathicmedicine #tompetty #standyourground #hamOnt #dundasOnt #music #lyrics #sundayjammin @ Dundas, Ontario

This is something Ive been playing with for awhile and Im so glad to finally announce it! As previously mentioned, TCM heart health can be nourished by deep conversation and connection - and what better way to do so than with a good book discussion? In this age of change, its time to leave behind the superficial and the things holding us back. Conversation is necessary. It is time to take charge of our health, of our future - so lets start with a book... Reading stimulates deeper thinking and unites us It means we take time to focus on ourselves So! Read the chosen book, then join me and other members of your community, to discuss! Voice your opinions, share your actions. Learn more about how exactly these methods, and more, can be used to nourish your TCM heart The first book is my choice, following books will be voted on! Book #1: The Art of Asking by Amanda Palmer - available at the library - for more information on who Amanada Palmer is, and on this book, watch her TED talk: link in bio I have chosen this book because Amanda Palmer is a personal inspiration of mine. This book talks about how not to fear asking for help, asking for anything, and what can happen when you do open yourself up and ask. Register/learn more on Facebook! Link in bio! Lets talk Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and the heart! The heart plays a major role in the life activities it rules over the body, and is known as the monarch organ When the heart is healthy, there is plenty of blood, and proper circulation to nourish. This shows up in the face as a rosy and radiant complexion The spirit resides in the heart. Spirit is not only the spiritual, mental, and thinking activities, but also all life activities and external signs: the ima...ge of the body, the complexion, language, responses, and body movements. A healthy heart allows for clear thinking and proper reactions Put simply the heart controls blood, which is a necessary material for mental activities. It can be affected by heat and emotions The heart is important for fertility : it is connected to the uterus. It also plays a role in sexuality in men, both function and desire In TCM, emotions and physical health are connected intimately. Each organ has a specific emotion tied to it. Joy is beneficial to the heart but only when it is not excessive Confused yet? TCM is a story, all about patterns and balance. Everything we do influences our health. All our organs rely on another. Moderation is key. Who you are as an individual, where you are in your health this all matters As the organ, the heart is usually the last to suffer. Other organs take the hit first. However, more and more symptoms of heart deficiencies are presenting: insomnia, anxiety, poor memory, mental restlessness So how does one protect or strengthen the heart? What I like to recommend most is deep connection, deep conversation. We need to stimulate that passion, that joy in our lives again. So much of our conversation is superficial. Reach out to someone you care about and talk to them about feelings, about what is really going on in your life. Join that club youve been curious about. Follow your passion, make it a priority. Take a chance, and see how you feel afterwards! Meetup.com is a great website for finding groups to connect with bonus if its a meditation group (even better for the heart!) #hearthealth #tcm #naturopathicdoctor #hamONT #dundasONT #connection #meditation

Not really health related, but I think fitting based on this month focusing on my audience - all of you lovely people! - getting to know the real me Today would have been David Bowies 73rd birthday! Bowie was a huge inspiration to me. I grew up listening to his music, but really found him when I started university - when I started to find myself. He became an immediate inspiration and obsession - I loved his music, but also his style, his passion, his flourish, his dri...ve to always be ahead, and his confidence. As I learned more about him, I found out that the confidence he showed on stage, the characters he created were used to disguise the anxiety and his actual lack of confidence. He helped me learn more about mental health and also how one can overcome and persevere. How different people deal with different issues, how individual they are. How music can heal, can help, can bring people together. Bowie helped music move forward. He pushed movements. He created paths. He loved, he struggled, he failed and he succeeded. He continues to be an inspiration to me, as he is to so many. His influence on me, in a nutshell - he helped me focus on passion, he reminds me not to be afraid to be me. Work hard. Glam is good Happy Birthday David! #bowie #davidbowie #music #community #wellness #health

2 0 2 0 The end of a year can be overwhelming. We can get caught up in thinking about future plans, of a future us. Before getting too caught up in what the future will bring, I suggest reflecting on the past. End your year with intention. And remember, be kind to yourself - in hindsight things seem obvious. Rather: reflect, learn, and grow . So what should you reflect on?... Think about what really stood out in 2019 - a trip? a milestone? a person? Think about what youre grateful for - give thanks for the positive experiences you had Reflect on what youve learned about yourself as a person Notice anything new you accomplished this year - a new hobby, a new experience, something new you learned What was something you worried about? How did it turn out? What was something that failed this year? How did you react? Was there anything about you that changed? What made an impact on you this year? (a movie, a podcast, a workshop, music) What would you go back and tell yourself, if you could go back to January 2019? Anything else you think is important, anything unique to you, anything that comes up again and again. Look at patterns here. And again - be kind to yourself! Maybe this year didnt turn out as planned, or is ending on a low note - remember, sometimes things get uncomfortable before a change, before you blossom. In this, we must learn to trust. Ourselves, our mind, our bodies, the universe, the process. Once youre done reflecting, see if your visions for the future have changed at all. I wish everyone a lovely end of 2019, and a lovely 2020. Whatever youre facing, whatever you choose - remember to be kind, remember to breathe, remember to be present, remember to trust. My 2019 has been a journey - full of highs and lows. On my own reflection, I know my 2020 will have a lot of focus on breathing, on trust, and on all of you! #newyear #newbeginnings #reflect #learn #love #naturopathicmedicine #hamiltonnaturopath #dundasnaturopath #healthy #healthybeginnings #wellness #2020 #dundasont #hamont #nature #breathe #newyearresolution2020
