tiny journal: E.A. Bucchianeri: Love, like everything else in life, should be a discovery, an adventure, and like most adventures, you don’t know you’re having one until you’re right in the middle of it. Write about the adventure of love.

This is your grandmother. Nope, that's not a metaphor. Believe it or not, this woman is quite literally your grandmother (albeit more than a few generations fur...ther back than what your genealogy obsessed cousin was able to rustle up). Today is #internationalwomensday2021 and on a day that celebrates women across the globe, we'd like to introduce you to one who is essential to each of our life stories. In fact, she's so important that without her, none of our life stories could even exist. She is "Mitochondrial Eve". In every cell of our body, we have blueprints (called DNA) jam packed into the nucleus telling our cells step by step how to build us. But there's more than just our own DNA packed into our cells. Just outside the nucleus is our cell's energy factories called mitochondria. These factories contain their very own DNA that's separate from ours and is passed down from the person's mother, who received the mitochondrial DNA of her mother and so on. This unbroken chain of hand me down mitochondrial DNA changes only an infinitesimal (but detectable) amount between generations. By looking at those itty bitty changes (markers) we can retrace the ancestors of all humans alive today (the more markers two people share, the more recent they shared an ancestor) back to a single woman. That woman is, you guessed it, Mitochondrial Eve -- the single female ancestor of all humanity who lived approximately 165,000 years before present in east Africa. Now it's important to note that she was not the first human. She was simply the woman who's lineage was the most successful and outcompeted other human lineages paving the way for all of us today. Want to learn more about her? We recommend the documentary "The Real Eve" which you can find here: https://youtu.be/JK4y41V1YUc

Happy, splashy elephants at Ithumba A #throwback to splashier times when rains had turned the Ithumba mud bath into something of an Olympic-sized swimming pool.... Pool rules for the orphaned elephants include giving way to any older wild visitors. Diving, splashing and snorkelling is positively encouraged! Watering holes like this mud bath provide a place for wildlife to cool off and quench their thirst. During the dry season, we ensure this and other water sources across Tsavo National Park are kept topped up until the rains return and fill it to the brim. We’ve shared more details in our recent behind-the-scenes look at Voi, our original Reintegration Unit, at: https://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org//behind-the-scenes-
