We have had a few patients express concern about the number of Covid-19 cases rising in the Nation but we have been fortunate enough to have extremely low numbers in the "Island Health Region" at this time. Meet our Associate: Dr. Leah Van Draanen Earwaker. She will be helping us treat patients 1-2 Fridays a month and we are excited to have her on join our team. If you want to learn more about her, here is her bio: "Known to her patients as Dr. Leah, she is originally from Toronto and attended the Schulich School of Dentistry at Western University in London, Ontario. She has received multiple awards for her clinical excellence, one of which was the Academy of General Dentistr...y Senior Student Award. Dr. Leah also has a breadth of experience in different clinical environments, including surgical externships with the Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Departments at the University of the Pacific and at Dalhousie University. More recently, Dr. Leah completed a General Practice Residency with the University of British Columbia based out of Vancouver General Hospital where she treated medically complex patients, oncology patients, and trained with surgical specialists. Since completing her residency, she has continued serving her community as a dentist at the Cool Aid Dental clinic. Dr. Leah is a member of the Victoria District Dental Society and continues to take continuing education courses. Aside from her clinical pursuits Dr. Leah enjoys running, golfing, skiing and spending time with her pets. I just wanted to take the opportunity to thank all our patients for following our rules/regulations during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Our association created some loose guidelines for Dentists to follow and as a result our staff and I have opted to follow them to the letter. As patients have pointed out, other Dentists are NOT doing this but since we are a very high risk Profession for most diseases this makes us quite concerned. My staff and I are putting our health at risk to treat patients and most of us live with young children and/or elderly parents. We CANNOT bring the virus home. WE ARE HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE THE CLINIC IS NOW OPEN! We are calling back patients that had previously scheduled appointments as well as patients that experienced dental emergencies during clinic closure. Our receptionists will also be reviewing the clinic protocols with you to keep everyone safe. Consent forms and body temperature will be reviewed at the door. As per the CDC, if you have any symptoms such as sore throat, runny nose, fever and/or cough you will not be permitted to... enter the clinic. Also if you have travelled, there is a mandatory 2 week quarantine period that you must do before entering any place of business. Staff and myself are also following these measures and checking our temperature everyday. Extra PPE is also being utilized and as a result we are kindly asking patients for a $10 surcharge to cover some of the costs. Despite Covid numbers being extremely low on the Island we are still going to take all precautions to keep staff and patients safe! May 8th - Clinic update: As most are aware the BC Government will be giving Dentists the "green light" to open Clinics for full services by mid-May. Is this realistic for most Dentists? Im sorry to say the honest answer is no. When Dental staff are cleaning, drilling, spraying water we aerosolize the virus that could be in the patients mouth. The research shows that this can linger in the air for up to 2 hours. Because of this, most Dental offices will have to make m...odifications to combat this. We are also still facing a severe shortage in Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Currently we are also waiting on evidence based Guidelines from our governing bodies and association to determine the best way to protect everyone. We are truly honoured by how patients have been so understanding throughout this difficult process and we ask to just be a bit more patient as we navigate these uncharted waters. Dear Patients: I understand and feel your frustration for not having access to regular dental care and I hope you understand that the Dental Clinic closure is for the purpose of keeping the public and my staff safe. Again, I ask that patients do their best to be as "patient" as possible in this difficult time. Please keep reading if interested: From the BC Dental Association: "On March 16, the College of Dental Surgeons of BC (CDSBC) strongly recommended that all electiv...e and non-essential dental services be suspended to contain community spread of the virus. On March 23, the Provincial Health Officer also confirmed that she issued a letter to all regulated health professionals outlining her expectations for their response in this acute phase of the pandemic. Together, these requirements mean that dentists are now only treating urgent dental emergencies in their offices. To provide emergency dental treatment safely, dentists and their staff must also have the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) which includes specially fitted masks, face shields, gowns, and gloves. Due to the widespread SHORTAGE of PPE, patients with dental pain, swelling, infection or trauma must first be assessed by their local General Practice dentist over the phone. To reduce the risk of transmission, only the MOST urgent dental cases will be referred to an APPROPRIATELY equipped dental clinic for treatment." See more

Update #3:. The clinic is closed indefinitely and will keep you posted on when we will reopen. We still dont have enough information about Covid-19 and how to handle the outbreak. Until we know how to keep staff and patients safe we will remain closed. Please call the clinic for the Emergency # if needed. UPDATE #2: There is a province wide shutdown from our College. Only Emergency procedures can be performed starting the 23rd provided all staff members are healthy. It is... still recommended for patients to do social distancing and if any symptoms develop to self isolate and call 811 or 1(833)784-4397 immediately. UPDATE: Due to the very low but possible exposure risk of staff that attended the Dental Conference in Vancouver a couple weeks ago we are self-isolating and shutting down the clinic for one more week to ensure that we dont develop symptoms. At the moment, we ARE symptom free, we will try and open on Monday, March 23rd upon approval by a healthcare professional. We will also stay up to date on what the Health Authorities advise. There is a possibility that a province wide shutdown may be in effect soon but will let you know. Hello Patients...we will try and keep our doors open as long as possible as we are confident in our infection protocol which includes sterilization, disinfection and the use of PPE. However, if you are immunocompromised, have booked for elective dental treatment and wish to cancel please give us at least two days notice so that we may find someone else to fill your appointment time. We have a couple of last minute cancellations with our hygienist for February 12th if anyone is due for a pre-Valentines Day cleaning.

Dear Patients: Due to the pandemics that have been happening I have had a few patients request to have masks from our office which I was generously giving away. Unfortunately we will no longer be able to do this as we are running low ourselves and our dental supply companies are now claiming a shortage of masks in their stock. Until this crisis resolves we have to be careful with our supply as we cannot work without masks. Thanks for your understanding.

Now that the snowfall is upon us we will keep you posted on clinic closure, however, we will try to stay open to accomodate patients especially those that can travel to the clinic. Stay safe everyone!

Dear Patients: We are excited to introduce the next future dentist, Ethan Ray. He was born November 13, 2018 weighing 8lb 7oz. Everyone has recovered well and he is very healthy and growing fast. My husband, Josh, and I wanted to thank everyone for allowing us the opportunity to grow our family and to take the time to enjoy it. Dear Patients: My husband and I are expecting our first child and therefore I will be on maternity leave from the beginning of November to the middle of March. We are so fortunate to have Dr. Dan Goldberg be our locum Dentist and take care of your dental needs. Here is a bio about Dr. Goldberg: "Before embarking on a journey into the world of dentistry, Dr. Dan Goldberg graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Education, and a Bachelor of Science. Four y...ears later he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with his Dental degree. With over 16 years experience in the dental field he has a diverse background in all aspects of Dentistry. In pursuit of being the best dentist he can be he constantly strives at being educated on the new innovations in the field. In 2009 Dr. Goldberg worked as an instructor at the University of Alberta in the Radiology department, while also conducting stem cell research. Recently, he sold his Calgary dental practice and is enjoying Island life. Outside of Dentistry there is nothing Dr. Goldberg enjoys more than spending time with his family and going on adventures with them. He is an avid nature lover. He also enjoys playing guitar, nature hikes, birding, and travelling." Feel free to come in and introduce yourself.
