Laughing at my own jokes all day long...

Where do I live?! Seriously I will never not be enamoured with the majesty of mountains. (Double negatives ftw)... This could be a teachable moment about fresh air and health or stress reduction and health but why not just look at the pretty mountain. #naturecure #lookoffintothedistance #naturopath #southsurrey #nds #healthandwellness

Article Alert Can my gut health really affect my mood? Since the 1980’s researchers have been exploring the connection and we are finally getting some answers. We have developed a complex network of neurons, proteins, and symbiotic microbes, throughout our gastrointestinal tract, called the enteric nervous system (ENS), that helps us meditate and perceive what’s happening in our external environment and communicates that to our brain. ... Coined the second brain, this network also allows us to immediately respond to signals from the gut- or gut feelings if you will. These responses occur independently from the impulses from the brain- kind of like a commander making decisions before the general has approved them. This ensures smooth digestion, as the ENS can increase or decrease contractions and movement along the colon, modulate the acidity of the stomach, tighten or relax sphincters as needed. Did you know that 95% of the body’s serotonin is found in the gut? Serotonin is a key neurotransmitter, working double-time as an informant, relaying gut activity to the brain, and also quenching feelings of anxiety and often the target of many pharmaceutical drugs for anxiety and depression (ie. SSRI drugs). When discussing mood dysfunction and gut it quickly becomes a chicken and egg scenario. Does gut dysfunction cause mood disorder or does the stress and mood cause gut dysfunction? The answer is never simple however we do know that supporting both often mitigates symptoms. So next time you get butterflies in your stomach from seeing your crush- you can thank your highly evolved complex ENS! #gutbrainaxis #foodisthymedicine

Article Alert This image is an old anatomy book from Tritinty college in Dublin. It was fascinating to see how medical textbooks have changes through time. At first, I laughed at how silly and outdated they seemed with humor's and some creative theories on how to expel bad moods. But then I realized we often don't know what we don't know. Then I got a request from the good people at Bestlife asked me about some of the biggest myths I see in practice and it really got me t...hinking about how much we STILL need to learn and understand our bodies. How we need to re-engage with our healthcare and how we collectively need to listen to the signs and symptoms. Link in bio for some of the biggest offenders including: Myth 1: That menstrual cramps hurting is just par for the course Myth 2: That it's completely fine if you are not pooping regularly Myth 3: Young people don’t need to worry about their health as much. Myth 4: Skin only gets better with products Myth 5: It's ok to supplement blind #mythbusting #healthmyths #knowbetterdobetter #empowered #makehealthapriority

Article Alert The vaginal microbiome is imperative in maintaining a more acidic environment. This is important for immune function- preventing the growth of harmful species that can cause UTI’s, BV, and increased risk for STI’s. Suffice to say it’s important to ensure you are maintaining this balanced flora. To do this you must ensure you aren’t douching, using harsh soaps, and lotions to wipe these out. You can also supplement with probiotics- orally or as vaginal suppo...sitories. If you are going the oral route the benefit is indirect, by supporting overall digestion, and immune function. Suppositories actually deposit the probiotic right at the target tissue so its important to know the route first. In oral probiotic formulations since its not direct focus bifido bacterium species as well as lactobacilli species. To find the best one it's often helpful to talk to a doctor about specific species that may be useful for your condition. Particularly because certain individuals with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth may not tolerate most oral probiotics very well. #vaginalmicrobiome #vaginalhealth #womenshealth #naturopathicdoctorsurrey
