Setting up your healthcare & support team during pregnancy can be overwhelming! Here are the top reasons why you should consider a Naturopathic doctor as part of your team: There is so much more than just a prenatal! Also, not all prenatals are made equally. Work with a Naturopathic doctor to create a plan for your needs!... Reduce nausea, vomiting, leg cramps, haemorrhoids, constipation, sleep disturbance and all the other annoying conditions that tend to go along with pregnancy Develop a dietary & lifestyle plan to support you and your growing baby throughout each trimester Optimize your health to minimize the chance of developing gestational diabetes and improve your chance of testing negative on the GBS test Prepare your body for birth through herbal medicine and acupuncture, as well as help with labour induction Learn which natural health products are safe in pregnancy (note: most aren’t so please, please don’t just buy anything off the shelf!) Make sure that you are supported through each step of your journey Have questions about how I could support you during your pregnancy? Book a 15min meet & greet consult for Etobicoke or @thewombvaughan through the link in my bio #etobicokenaturopath #etobicokeND #torontonaturopath #healthandwellness #naturopathicdoctor #vaughannaturopath #vaughanND #perinatalcare #pregnancy #postpartumhealth #womenshealth See more

PCOS - Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome September was PCOS awareness month and definitely for good reason! PCOS is the #1 concern I see in my practice in women in their 20s and 30s and often they’ve been given a diagnosis with no explanation as to what it is. PCOS is a complex condition that is diagnosed by having 2 out of 3 of:... Polycystic ovaries Hyperandrogenism (too much male hormones) either on labs or symptomatically - acne, male pattern hair growth or hair loss Anovulation or Oligomenorrhea (long, irregular or absent periods) Symptoms of PCOS include: Irregular or absent periods Cystic acne Hirsutism or hair loss/thinning Weight gain (due to blood sugar dysregulation and insulin resistance) Mood swings & anger If you’ve been diagnosed with PCOS, let me start by saying birth control and metformin are NOT your only options and this is not an infertility sentence! Diet & exercise along with some amazing supplements and herbs can have a profound affect to improve ovulation and get your cycles back on track, reduce androgens, improve blood sugar & insulin sensitivity, help with weight management and improve fertility This is definitely a conditions where Naturopathic medicine shines Questions about PCOS? Need a boost? Vitamin B12 is a great way to get an energy boost since low levels are one of the most common causes of fatigue. B12 is naturally found in animal products, but as many of us are moving towards more plant based diets, that can lead to deficiencies in some vitamins and minerals. You may be at increased risk for insufficient B12 levels if you are a vegan, have a GI disorder such as IBD or celiac, if you are of advanced age, or taking certain types of medicat...ion for diabetes or heartburn. B12 injections are a great and easy way to raise your levels! Doing an injection allows it to be completely absorbed in your body vs only 5-10% when you take it orally. Fun fact, B12 is naturally bright red #etobicokenaturopath #etobicokeND #torontonaturopath #healthandwellness #naturopathicdoctor See more

Anyone else feeling the pressure to avoid catching a cold at all costs? Right now it’s the perfect recipe for catching a cold with the weather jumping around, along with heightened stress and too many comfort foods (hello wine and sweets). Fortunately there are so, so many things you can do to improve your immune system and prevent the sniffles.... Always start with the basics: sleep, regular exercise, lots of fruits and vegetables, minimize sugars and alcohol, and stress management. Next up would be upping your food game and individualized supplements! - Focus on soups and stews and pass on the raw food as much as possible. - Add in extra warming spices like ginger, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, etc. - Test your vitamin D levels and supplement accordingly! - Vitamins A and C as well as Zinc are all great for the immune system as well. - Herbal medicine is my favourite, in my tincture I have Astragalus, North American Ginseng, Codonopsis, Eleuthero, Reishi, and Licorice. Please remember that each person is unique and not all options are good for everyone - speak with your healthcare provider before starting new supplements or herbs! Rest & Relaxation When was the last time you took a break? Our North American culture is so work driven we often forget to take care of ourselves. We work so hard to be better, to make more money, to be more productive, etc, but what we really need to do is take a step back and recharge.... Self care is a crucial component of our health. You charge your phone and fill up your gas tank to keep those running, why wouldn’t you want to recharge your mind & body to keep yourself at your best? After a super busy July, I took some time off last week to recharge - I got my nails done, went for a massage and took a weekend getaway to eat some good food and have some good wine! 10/10 would recommend - go spend some time on yourself and see how much better you feel! What’s on your self care list? #etobicokenaturopath #etobicokeND #torontonaturopath #healthandwellness #naturopathicdoctor #selfcare #restandrelaxation See more

Have you been feeling a little off lately? I know I have. Nothing bad per se but just suboptimal where my digestion is a little wonky, allergies are slightly increased, mood is a touch flat, etc. I’m attributing these changes to all the disinfectants and hand sanitizers which are little by little destroying my microbiome. ... All of these precautions against this pandemic, which are fortunately reducing the spread of this virus, are also killing off the good bacteria in your body. We actually need to be exposed to a variety of pathogens to build up our immune systems. We need good bacteria in our bodies to help with our digestion and to help us make neurotransmitters along with a whole bunch of other things. Here’s what I’m doing to help my microbiome right now: Washing my hands with regular soap and water instead of using hand sanitizer when possible. Using a clean hand sanitizer when needed, with no toxic and questionable chemicals Taking probiotics to add in good bacteria and hopefully replace what was lost Spending more time in nature - walking barefoot and playing in dirt is actually great for you Eating a wide variety of plant based foods and fermented foods to feed my good bacteria Have you noticed any changes? What are you doing to support your body? #etobicokenaturopath #etobicokeND #torontonaturopath #healthandwellness #healthykids #naturopathicdoctor #immunesupport #microbiome See more

Food introduction & baby-led weaning When you think of baby food, I’m sure you’re thinking of apple sauce or carrot purée, but in the last few years BLW has started to become more and more common. BLW involves introducing food as larger pieces (like a carrot stick, apple slice, fish stick, etc) and allowing baby to feed herself. The research for BLW is actually pretty cool:... Promotes a health relationship with food Promotes healthy food choices Promotes a healthy body composition later in life And there is no increased risk of choking! I personally recommend a combo of purées and BLW to add in some more nutrients and to get all the food textures in so we can minimize picky eating. If you want to learn more about food intro & BLW, check out my free webinar on Monday, July 27th at 1pm! Fish Oils! Probably my #1 recommended supplement, omega 3 fatty acids are incredible for a number of health concerns! I’m sure you’ve heard how great they are and may have considered picking one up, but there are actually many factors to consider when choosing a fish oil:... The source: what fish are they using? I prefer small fish since they have less chemical load. @cytomatrix uses sardines, mackerel and anchovies The brand: what’s the quality like? Are they 3rd party testing to insure all the chemicals and heavy metals are removed? The EPA:DHA ratio: this is going to depend on the reason you’re taking fish oils. EPA is more anti-inflammatory and for mental health and DHA is more for brain and nerve development/function. For general health you want a 2:1 ratio of EPA:DHA The amount: here you want to look at the amount of EPA and DHA rather than the total amount of omega-3s. Again, this is going to depend on what you’re treating but I typically recommend at least 1g of EPA The form & flavour: this is definitely key so you have a product you will be compliant with! I love these @cytomatrix ones - they’re actually delicious! Curious if you should try a fish oil?
