DROP IN ON LIFE 24.09.2020

Changing times, eh? In the wake of COVID, I lost the opportunity to host DROP IN skate camp. Our local skatepark was closed along with other parks and at first I was bothered because it begged the question of where better to distance socially than in a field of grass, a forest trail, or a park designed to inspire and cultivate individuality? Soon I understood that although our community is small and the population density low, sometimes blanket conditions need to be made tha...t show we are here to participate globally. Like others, I took this time to re-evaluate my goals and my mission. To ride a skateboard is to stand for something greater. To skateboard is to stand for our brothers and sisters. To skateboard is to get creative when going against the grain is the only way forward. To skateboard is to express through art. That’s how we’ve always been. Now like never before is a time to help kids explore their role in society... and their role in the future. At the forefront of these lessons are Peer Inclusion, Creative Problem Solving, and Perseverance in the face of change. I would like to say that for this first season, DROP IN is a FREE program that I will host weekly at the Cumberland skatepark. It allows me to grow, plan, and demonstrate that I’m in this for the right reasons. Things have been challenging financially for a lot of people recently. If I can gain some community traction, I would like it to be a paid summer program next year... my dream job. I’m not sure yet which day of the week this will be (and it may change.. weather dependent) but I will post a link soon to a registration page. This just gives me an idea of who might show up and how I will proceed with the Village of Cumberland. Thanks for reading... I’m really happy that things are starting to get back to normal. One last note! DROP IN skate sessions will not necessarily be socially distant. There will be high fives. There will be hugs. There will be hand holding. Your call. See more

It’s a rainy one out there, but skate season is just around the corner . If you’re interested in learning how to skate this year, join me 1 week from today at Moon’s Records in Cumberland, 7 pm. I encourage community members interested in youth development to show up as well. There’s absolutely no cost to attend my meeting, and everyone is welcome :). Looking forward to meeting you!

Skateboarding by its very nature was born from hard times. We get it. Not every family can go out to the shop and buy a new board, and many parents want to gauge their little one’s interest before making the investment. DROP IN wants to make skating accessible to everyone. If you have an old setup lying around, head over to Blue Toque used sports in Courtenay and make a donation. Decks, trucks, wheels, bearings, hardware and helmets...we want it all. There’s nothing like the feeling of handing a kid their first board. This is skateboarding, this is community.

Lesson 5 is what I’m calling the crux of this program. Dropping in on ramps, setting and achieving realistic goals for ourselves. Also, if you’ve noticed my posters around Cumberland, my general meeting for all parents and participants will be at Moon’s Records. March 6th, 7pm! I will give a full presentation and have my course outline, along with a survey so I can learn more about you guys! Thanks

Hey everyone! My name is Luke, and I want to thank you for taking an interest in my page. I started skating at 6 years old, making 2020 my 21st year riding the plank. Skateboarding is an incredibly special community to be a part of, and I owe it a huge thank you for helping me become the person I am today. It is a universal symbol of community inclusion among its members, not unlike music or dance. Last summer, I hardly skated at all; preoccupied with maintaining the status q...uo of adulthood, I spent no time doing what I love most. Born from that experience, I offer you DROP IN ON LIFE. Let’s get in to it! DROP IN ON LIFE (or DROP IN) is an inclusive, in-depth, grass-roots skateboarding program that I have developed to launch this summer. The program is targeted at youth, although adults have expressed interest and ultimately, this is for everyone. Here’s the catch: My program goes far beyond just learning how to skate. Each session, we’re going to explore new ideas that we can take home and practice in our daily lives. These are lessons that we can apply at school, with our friends, families and in our community. We will work to expand our minds, hearts and enrichen our lives. We will practice these skills by challenging ourselves on skateboards, pushing the boundaries of our perceived abilities, and most importantly...having fun! You will start to see these posters around the Valley in shops, community centers, schools and in the streets. Share them with other people. The posters will include the date and time for a general meeting to be held in Cumberland. Stay tuned, much love! See more
