Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) presents with symptoms that are very similar to IBS - including bloating, abdominal distention, indigestion, constipation and/or diarrhea. There is a very strong correlation between SIBO and IBS, with up to 80% of IBS cases testing positive for SIBO. When SIBO is treated, the IBS goes away. For this reason, SIBO is considered one of the #1 root causes behind IBS!

Often, women start taking the birth control pill for painful periods, PCOS or to manage acne. The pill is a standard treatment in conventional medicine, so I see a lot of women who’ve been told that it’s the only option to fix their hormones. Unfortunately, the pill (and IUD, patch etc) is only masking symptoms and really not fixing anything at all. Although it can offer relief and may be indicated in some cases, it shouldn’t be considered a solution to hormonal imbalance. ...And it is certainly NOT your only option to balance hormones! If you’re looking for a holistic, root cause approach to your hormonal health, visit my website to learn more . . . #hormones #hormonebalance #womenshealth #PCOS #acne #menstrualcycle #endometriosis #periodproblems #postbirthcontrolsyndrome #holistichealth #naturopathicmedicine #naturopathicdoctor See more

Too much inflammation can affect us negatively in so many ways. In practice, I have seen the elimination of food sensitivites to be so helpful for a variety of health concerns! There is an increasing amount of evidence which links irritable bowel syndrome with food sensitivities (IgG hyperreactivity). Some research suggests that food IgG hyperreactivity could also play a role in depression. If you are dealing with depression, consider what dietary interventions can be a part of your treatment plan. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29710769

Healing starts with the gut! The digestive system and microbiome play a significant role in our overall health. Skin conditions, weight management, mood, and autoimmune diseases are just some of the conditions impacted by the health of the gut.

If your thyroid blood work only looks at TSH, you aren’t getting the whole picture! If you’ve been told your thyroid is normal but you’re still experiencing symptoms of an underactive thyroid such as fatigue, weight gain, constipation or thinning hair, it’s time to get a second opinion. The lab range for TSH is quite broad, so as long as you are in the normal range, you’ll be told your thyroid is normal. But when I look at TSH, I look at it with an optimal range in m...ind, which is seen in the research as between 1 and 2 normally. So some individuals might have a TSH of 3, but because it’s in the normal lab range, they’re told that their thyroid is okay despite still feeling lousy I use comprehensive blood work that measures not only TSH, but also free T3, T4, reverse T3 and thyroid antibodies. This full test panel allows me to get a complete understanding of how your thyroid is functioning, which means more accurate and effective treatment to get you feeling like yourself again! See more

B12 injections! Vitamin B12 is important for creation of red blood cells and hemoglobin, DNA synthesis, neurotransmitter function, hormone production and more. We can get B12 through our diet, mainly through organ meat, chicken and beef - which means vegetarians and vegans often have lower levels of B12. We can also get B12 through oral supplementation but individuals with digestive issues or low stomach acid may not be able to absorb it effectively. This is when a ...prescription for B12 injections can be extremely beneficial! Injections put B12 directly into the muscle to allow for rapid absorption into the bloodstream The best way to determine if you have a B12 deficiency is through a simple blood test. Ask your ND or family doctor to test your B12 levels to determine whether injections may benefit you! See more

Bloated after eating? You might be having trouble digesting certain foods. This digestive tonic contains bitter herbs which help to stimulate appetite and aid in digestion. It contains an herb called Gentian, which is traditionally used in herbal medicine to relieve digestive disturbances and increase bile flow. This tonic can also help relieve constipation, digestive distress, and sluggish peristalsis (aka muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract) ... If you frequently experience gas, bloating, burping or indigestion, this can help promote optimal digestion while we treat the root cause of your symptoms. Bitters are not appropriate for everyone, so be sure to talk to your ND to make sure they are right for you. . . . #bitters #herbalmedicine #herbs #gentian #ginger #tumeric #chamomile #dandelion #plantpower #digestion #digestivehealth #bloating #tummytroubles #guthealth #ibs #digestiondoctor #stcatharinesnaturopath See more

Fatigue and low energy holding you back? Do you experience an afternoon crash or feel completely exhausted at the end of day? Having trouble sleeping and not feeling rested in the morning? Your adrenal glands may need some support! Low energy and fatigue are symptoms of various imbalances in the body. Many of us are in constant overdrive and never give our bodies a chance to rest. When we try to fight through life, our adrenal glands have to keep up by secreting lots of ...cortisol (stress hormone). Overtime the adrenals can burn out, leaving us feeling completely exhausted. We need a healthy amount of cortisol to function, so both too much and too little cortisol can be problematic. I commonly do adrenal fatigue testing through saliva to see what phase of adrenal dysfunction you are in. This allows us to target your treatment and give your adrenal glands the support they need to keep you functioning at your best. . . . #adrenals #HPAdysfunction #burnout #fatigue #cortisol #stress See more
