What's FERRITIN got to do with FATIGUE? Ferritin is a blood marker that represents the total IRON stores in the body. It's the earliest, most sensitive indicator of adequate iron stores. Iron is important for oxygen transport, ENERGY production, red blood cell synthesis, and many more important biological activities.... Iron DEFICIENCY is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide and it’s something I see nearly daily in my clinical practice, yet it’s often missed or overlooked. There are misunderstandings and misconceptions regarding what a person’s iron stores should be. Many doctors don't’ take symptoms of fatigue, restless legs, low mood, or exercise intolerance seriously until there is full-blown anemia (decrease in red blood cells). But the reality is that iron stores can be totally depleted without causing anemia (i.e., low ferritin levels). You can still have SYMPTOMS of low iron without being anemic. In fact, as many as 84% of individuals without anemia, but with extremely low levels of iron, have symptoms. Signs You Could be Iron Deficient: - Fatigue, low energy, or lack of motivation - Shortness of breath or changes to your exercise tolerance - Hair loss - Low or depressive mood (or treatment-resistant low mood) - Increased susceptibility to infections and illness - Cognitive difficulties - Restless leg syndrome - Cravings for ice or other non-food items Don’t let people tell you it’s fine when it’s not. If you have had tests to evaluate your fatigue in the past, it may be time to ask for a second opinion. FERTILITY ASSESSMENTS I love working with couples to improve their fertility and preconception care. WHY? ... Because for fertility, the details matter. This is why I spend the time getting to know the ins and outs of my patient's health and current fertility status. What's it like having a fertility assessment done? A first office visit usually includes a detailed history including previous pregnancies, history of pelvic procedures, cycle regularity, cycle length, premenstrual symptoms, bleeding patterns, and menstrual period length. In addition to the standard fertility screening, I also want to know about your stress levels, sleep patterns, exercise type, and frequency, as well as nutrition. By the end of this first appointment, I have a good idea of where we need to start with further testing if needed. Usually, we look at your levels of sex hormones and indications of regular ovulation as a baseline. Once we have a full fertility work-up completed we begin an individualized treatment plan that is targeted to improve your fertility and overall health, helping you best prepare for conception and beyond! Holistic care is always a part of a fertility treatment plan - including dietary changes, exercise modulation, supplementation, and other modalities such as physical therapy, acupuncture, and others! Have questions about fertility and pre-conception care? Book a complimentary meet and greet to find out what you can do today to improve your fertility. S K I N H E A L T H Is it true that good skin starts from within? YES. Your skin physically manifests deeper imbalances in your body.... Our skin acts as a check engine light for the rest of our body - alerting us to look beyond at what might be causing these signs. For example: Acne and Facial Hair PCOS Thickening and darkening of skin (Acanthosis Nigricans) Diabetes Dry skin lack of Vitamin A, Essential Fats, or many others Rosacea (reddening and flushing) celiac disease, intestinal flora imbalances and H. pylori infections I could go on forever listing skin manifestations of internal diseases () but I think you get the point. Don’t just ignore your check engine light because, well, we all know where that gets us... Find out what your skin is telling you by booking a consult today Bonus: Consultations are covered under extended health! Naturopathic Medicine & Me. Before I actually attended naturopathic medicine school myself, I didn't totally understand what it meant to be a naturopathic doctor or practice naturopathic medicine. This is why I am sharing my journey to becoming a naturopathic doctor and what that truly means. Q&A - Questions answered in this interview include: ... 1.) What is naturopathic medicine? 2.) What is my scope of practice as a naturopathic doctor (i.e., what can I do)? 3.) What education and training are required to become a naturopathic doctor? 4.) What is the licensing and regulation of ND's? 5.) Can I work with your existing healthcare providers? 6.) Is naturopathic medicine evidence-based? 7.) Why did I choose to be a naturopathic doctor? I hope you enjoy hearing my personal story and my passion for practicing evidence-based, naturally focused, patient-centered medicine. Please like, tag, or share with others you think may benefit from naturopathic medical care. If you are still unsure if it's the right path for you, you can view my website to see the common conditions I treat, or simply book a complimentary meet and greet to get a sense if it's the right fit before jumping in. Is skipping breakfast a good or bad idea to help women shed pounds? Based on a number of studies, we may have it all backward for women, and by skipping breakfast you may actually be increasing your weight gain particularly in the mid-section. I’m going to explain why ... The problem is the majority of intermittent fasting research has been conducted on overweight or obese middle-aged men or postmenopausal women. A lot of this research has shown promising results, which is all great, but what’s a reproductive-aged woman to do? We should look at evidence-based science... 1.) When we compare groups of women, those who are large breakfast eaters vs to those who skip breakfast and have larger meals later the day, we consistently find women who skip breakfast may actually be altering their hormones and metabolic functions contributing to infertility, altered blood sugar and insulin responses, and weight gain. 2.) In randomized controlled trials, women given the exact same nutrition plan were told ONLY to change the proportion of their meals either large breakfast and small dinners or big breakfast and small dinners. The results were astonishing. Given the EXACT SAME calories, exact macronutrients, and so on, women who had large breakfasts lost 11% of their body weight vs. 4% in the dinner eaters group. Additionally, women who had the bigger breakfast decreased their insulin levels by 50% (compared to 25%), and their ghrelin (hunger hormone) levels by 9% (vs < 5%). There's a lot more to unpack here, but for now, if you’re a woman trying intermittent fasting, you may want to consider switching up your method to reduce the impact on your hormones and to enhance any metabolic and weight loss efforts. Are you a women curious about how your hormones and diet may be playing a role in your body composition? Days off for me means patient research! I have a slight addiction to learning more about things i’m passionate about - natural medicine, womens health and hormones, and of course, gut health. Nearly everyday I’m reading research articles to get the best up to date science on how to help my patients. Between books, articles, reviews, podcasts, webinars, and conferences my days and weeks are packed full of knowledge that i’m always excited to share with patients.... I do it because I love it, and because providing quality, evidence based care to patients is my priority. Examples of this week’s knowledge bits: Gut health, specifically IBS is linked to acne severity Both PCOS and Acne are affected by environmental endocrine disruptors A different approach to intermittent fasting in women found to reverse hormone imbalances Hormone replacement therapy used in perimenopause and menopause - benefits, risks and misconceptions Natural, evidence based approaches to prevention of cardiovascular disease Which of these topics do you want to know more about? Post in the comments! Best, Dr. Randi Brown, ND #natural #ibsawareness #guthealth #hormonebalance #pcosawareness #yyj #yyjhealth #yyjfitness #nutritionmatters
